Lt. Cmdr. Robby Jackson: So, you just waded on in like John Wayne. Why'd you do it? What were you thinking, man? Jack Ryan: I don't know. I wasn't thinking. Lt. Cmdr. Robby Jackson: That's it? You sound like some of my students. Jack Ryan: It just pissed me off. I couldn't just stand there and watch him shoot those people right in front of me. It was... rage. Pure rage... Just made me mad. Lt. Cmdr. Robby Jackson: Here's hoping you never get mad at me, man.
The second Tom Clancy/Jack Ryan film. Here Alec Baldwin's Jack Ryan has been recast to be played by Harrison Ford, who is good, if a little old for the part. The movie is a revenge driven action film that strips away the plot complexities of Clancy novels in favor of action. That being said, the film stretches its plot pretty thin and doesn't become very enjoyable.
As mentioned, Ford is Jack Ryan. He is in London with his family, when he witnesses an attempted IRA assassination. Ryan is able to become involved, killing one of the assassins in the process. Bad new for Jack arises, when the assassin is shown to be the brother of one of the other assassins, played by Sean "why can't you play more good guys" Bean.
Following the inevitable prison escape, Jack Ryan must now fight to prevent revenge from being taken on him and his family.
What the movie benefits from is its lead actors. Ford is always capable, conveying the emotion of a man who doesn't like violence, but is forced to use it. Bean is equally good as the villain and the movie provides a good amount of screen time to developing him as such.
Once again however, the movie is dragged down by stretching its plot out for two hours, without being very elaborate to make it very bearable. The last part is good enough, but also drowns itself in cliches involving sneaking around the darkened house, before jumping into a rainy night speed boat chase sequence.
Its made well enough as a film, but not entertaining enough or very deep as a substitute.
Sean Miller: How's the family, Ryan? Nearly lost 'em, didn't you? It's easy to get at them. You should look after your family better, you know? Are you there? Jack Ryan: Yeah. Sean Miller: I understand your little girl's feeling better, eh? Lost her spleen though, eh? Pity, that. Make it a mighty tough on her to fight off infection, eh Jacky? Jack Ryan: You sick son of a bitch!
Harrison Ford was the best Jack Ryan! Never get bored watching this film. Sean Bean plays the perfect villian out for revenge. Great action and a great cast for this film.
I consider PATRIOT GAMES to be one of the more digestible films of the Tom Clancy series, in that it can be watched by most anyone, from teenagers looking for a good time, adults looking for character development or political intrigue, as well as action hounds, Ford fans and more. The dvd doesn?t really give us much else, other than a pretty solid featurette filled with interviews, but if you?re a fan of the series, and certainly of this movie, I would heartily recommend that you add this thriller to your collection, especially with its inherently high rewatch value.
I've tried watching this movie twice, and both times I get bored after about 30 minutes. Harrison Ford is a great actor, but I'm just not liking this movie.
Harrison Ford's first Jack Ryan movie is a convincing action thriller. While some parts feel a bit simplified, probably even more so when compared to the novel, the film still flows perfectly and has you on the edge of your seat, especially during the really exciting showdown. One might say with a cast of names like this nothing can go wrong but the good direction should get its credits as well. Also: There's just something really satisfying about seeing Harrison Ford all pissed and ready to strike back in bloody revenge.
Not a bad sequel to The Hunt for the Red October, Ford is an upgrade over Alec Baldwin and his family is perfect for his character giving a strong base for the audience to root for. Bean is ideal as the terrorist fueled by revenge and the action is taunt and well thought out up until the second rate conclusion which became a common brawl between the two conflicting forces. Otherwise though a great middle film to the Jack Ryan series.
Former CIA Analyst Jack Ryan is in London, England to do a speech on one of his latest books. After the speech and on his way to meet his wife and daughter, Ryan witnesses an attack by an ultra faction of the IRA on members of the British Royal Family. Without thinking Ryan charges into the scene and stops the kidnapping of the English Lord and killing one of the terrorist?s brother in the process. Bent on revenge, the terrorists dead brother escapes from prison and seeks to avenge his brother?s death. Can Ryan capture and stop the terrorists before they kill him and his family and save the royals they targeted?
Patriot Games is another espionage film based of another Tom Clancy book. This time Harrison Ford handles the role Jack Ryan and does an astounding job over Alec Baldwin?s performance who at times failed to compare to Connery in the previous film. The movie is loosely based on the book to a point. The ending is different, the movie received a more Hollywood cheesy ending and the book, Jack never killed the brother of the terrorist he just killed a terrorist and stopped the assignation attempt. Patriot Games book also happened before Red October, but the movies reversed that to reflect the age difference of Ford to Baldwin. The movie is a solid winner and the conspirator out there will enjoy this film. Patriot Games receives four and half shamrocks to five for being a solid espionage film.
Harrison Ford. Ah, he will be forever a true star for his many roles, and perhaps this role is his less praised one. Boy, does he do a great job, but when doesn't he when it comes to acting?
Stone cold classic, of the IRA taking on the CIA and SAS. Brilliantly acted and fast paced thriller. Patriot Games is a class popcorn movie, with top performances from Harrison Ford and Sean Bean.
Love the Jack Ryan Series and this is no exception.Harrison is the best Jack Ryan and this is my fav out of the Trilogy.Sean Bean is really good as the terrorist.
very good action film with a superb all star cast.sean bean makes a superb villain, and harrison ford is on top form as the hero.all the action sequences are well done.
I would probably have liked this better if I had never read the book.
However There is a lot of action. And Sean Bean was convincing as an IRA terrorist.
Jack Ryan and his family are vacationing in England. Quite by accident, Ryan thwarts a terrorist attack - outside Buckingham Palace on Lord Holmes, a member of the royal family - by a splinter IRA group, killing the younger brother of one of the terrorists. Retuning to the U.S. with his family, Ryan thinks that's the end of the matter. But the terrorist won't let the matter rest and he won't stop until he's had his revenge.
Harrison Ford was good in this, but seemed a little long in the tooth for the rough stuff on this occasion. There were good parts for Polly Walker and Alun Armstrong but I felt a little let down by Sean Bean. He's either great or poor but nothing inbetween.
Ford was never able to live up to his reputation from The Indiana Jones trilogy but he does manage to pull off some amazing stunts in these political/action movies. A reasonable plot though great acting.
Action aplenty but don't forget that when this was put together the IRA were indeed a force to be considered. They've surely all become grasscutters now (haha) as the new terror has risen from another religion. I don't care too much about the politics of it all but I do know something of fanatics, you shouldn't make a habit of getting in their way. Gripping stuff.
