Plot: A musical fantasy about a drifter who becomes friends with a pitiful orphan girl and her grandfather.
an absolute masterpiece, full of great songs, great performances from steve martin and bernadette peters, even christoper walken. i love this movie. the bbc version with bob hoskins is pretty good too but i prefer this version, albeit more condensed, just makes me feel good.
One of my favorite movie musicals ever. Not as complex as the BBC mini-series it's based on (starring the best actor EVER, Bob Hoskins), but it stands up great on its own. It's unlike any musical I'd ever seen, none of the characters actually singing, but rather lip-synching old standards from the Depression era. And the story is pretty damn bleak for a movie musical. The musical numbers are some of the best, most visually exciting this side of "Singin' in the Rain" and "Moulin Rouge!" You could tell Steve Martin was trying to break free from his "wild and crazy" persona on this one, playing a fairly unlikeable cad who you still somehow find yourself rooting for. Bernadette Peters is cute as a button, particularly in her "Love is Good for Anything" number, and Christopher Walken. . .oh Christopher Walken. His striptease routine is one of those rare screen gems that more people should see but haven't. This one belongs with modern musicals like "Dancer in the Dark" and "Once", taking the audience's expectations of what a musical is and turning it on its ear.
This is a very underrated movie, perhaps one of the most in the last 30 years. A dark, strange musical that sucks you into the hopeless drudgery of the Depression-era, while randomly jerking you from reality to let you enjoy several dazzling musical numbers (Christopher Walkins as a pimp who can tap dance? Awesome)
A completely risky movie that will not appeal to a lot of people. This movie was truly ahead of its time - critics hated it when it came out in 81, and finally, now, many are looking back and saying 'Wow, this movie was really something else when you think about it.'
A different side of Steve Martin. This is the musical for people that don't normally like musicals. The attention spent on the period art direction is gorgeous. Plus it's the first glimpse we get of Christopher Walkens amazing dance moves.
Steve Martin gioves a really good dramatic performance in this beautiful looking but unsusal musical set in 1930's Chicago. I did like that for the musical numbers they used original recordings of songs from that period and the actors just lip-sync to thme. Bernadette Peters, Jessica Harper and Christopher Walken are great in support. What let this film down to me unfortunately is that there some dull moments. A good film if you are looking for something different.
wow steve martin is a good dancer! but teh movie is kind of meh. the songs are cool. i just watch them a lot now.
This was so depressing! However, I have one ex-co-worker who deservedly praised Christopher Walken as the singing pimp.
Hate, Hate, Hate, and Bob Hoskins didn't make the miniseries any better, brings back childhood nightmares.
