Pretty good adaptation of Jane Austen's novel. The characters all look natural; no make - up, no fancy hairdo's. Aside, some of the ugliest bonnets I've ever seen are on full display in Persuasion.

Ciarán Hinds is a decent actor, and Amanda Root seems to be a pretty good...( read more) fit. Interesting to see Fiona Shaw in a different type of role (as opposed to the one she took on in Harry Potter).

Recommend it to those who enjoyed 2005's Pride and Prejudice, though this was made on a lower budget.

Period piece. Jane Austen. It's not for everyone, that's for sure.

I have not read the novel, but I was certain that the screenplay did not stray too far from the story. Jane Austen, clearly, was a talented writer, with such complex characters and romantic entanglements, getting...( read more) off track from the original story would show too much. In this aspect, and from other reviews I have read, it's probably a safe bet that you would enjoy the film if you enjoyed the book.

This film does not have the fancy frills, and over the top, over elaborate lacy British costumes and sets that you might expect from a mid 1800s period piece, considering the modern day adaptations, and recreations. Like the book, I am told, the wardrobe is modest and humble. This is refreshing to see from a period piece. This allows for more focus on the story, which if you are a hopeless romantic such as myself, is perfect.

The story, as it should be, is sweet, and wholesome, and proper. Not many of these characteristics are coupled together to describe modern stories. What attracts one to a story like this, is different for everyone I gather. I think it boils down to a recognizance of the death of true romance, and the attempt to secure some sort of ideal that it is possible still, if not in this realm, then in a fantasy realm.. where men are gents still, and women curtsy.

The acting, as many have discussed, is very natural, and believable. This, is obviously required for a Jane Austen adaptation. The characters are so complex, as I mentioned, and require a certain finesse to portray the necessary emotions, which is essential to the story. The acting was flawless I would say. Amanda Root is adorable, and Ciaran Hinds is quite the stud. Some very hilarious, and lovable characters.

Noteworthy point: Flixter and Rotten Tomatoes are in concurrment on this movie, at 82% liked it. That's saying something about the solidity of this film, if nothing else.

    *I loved it*

File this under films-that-deserve-better-reviews-than-I'm-giving them. I liked it, but I just couldn't get behind it. Persuasion is a mature Jane Austen film, more subdued and grown-up than Pride and Prejudice. The camera work is decidedly unstuffy at certain points. Also re...( read more)freashing: Amanda Root in the main role. Unlike the conventionally pretty Gwenyth Paltrow and Keira Knightly, she a woman of modest looks (which is actually better for the source material). Austen heroines are never knockouts; they're clever feminists who don't quite belong in their surroundings. But more to the point, Amanda Root carries the film with the sorrow of her eyes, alone. She's perfection.

Despite all of the positive reviews, I found this really slow moving and not as enjoyable as most of the other Jane Austen adaptations.

I'm going to watch it. For sure. Why? 'Cause I'm an Austen fan!

What can I say ... love anything Jane Austen so naturally loved this movie :)
  • June 27, 2009
Ciaran Hinds gives a wonderful performance here. He can put so much emotion into one look. Amanda Root did a lovely job as well. A very nice version to watch.

    I don't think I've seen this! Inconceivable!

It isn't a perfect adaptation of Austen's book (I've imagined Captain Wentworth a bit different), but somehow this film recreates very well the spirit of the novel.

Much of the movie's emotional work has to be done by...faces and eyes, while other people speak of other things, and to see that happening is frustrating, because it happens so slowly, and romantic, b... full review
