  Take the plot of Bring it On, add remixes and mash-ups of popular music thrown through the Glee grinder, Rebel Wilson's adlibbed one-liners, and shake, and you have Pitch Perfect, an a cappella singing comedy that was a sleeper hit last fall. My female friends raved about it. It's from a 30 Rock writer. It's from the director of the irreverent musical Avenue Q. I like Wilson and the movie's star, Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air). I wanted to like it, and while I found most of it passably cute, I could not get too attached and the chief reason was Kendrick's character. She's so surly and standoffish and just plain bratty, and for no good reason. It gets really annoying. Her rote romance with a bland hunky guy is made even more incredulous because Kendrick, get this, hates movies. Not certain kinds of movies or movies with certain actors, just the entire medium. Who is like this? That's like disliking all of music entirely. The overall comedic spirit of the movie is amiable with a few oddball touches that keep things interesting, notably one girl who talks very quietly and says outrageous confessions. Listen well. The performance segments are impressive in their own right enough so that I wish there were more of them. There's also a level of reality to projectile vomit that I was not prepared for. Overall, Pitch Perfect is a fitfully amusing comedy that never really settles down a functional tone, and Kendrick's bratty character drags the movie down. It's far from perfect but depending upon your love of a cappella, it could be good enough. Nate's Grade: B-

  In this mostly light comedy, we get a fun look into the world of competitive college a capella singing groups. Beca is a loner college freshman who can't find a clique to belong to until she gets muscled into the last one she thought possible: an all girl a capella singing group surprisingly made up of a diverse group of girls from all walks of life. Having a background in music, I was able to appreciate this film a little more. Granted, the music being performed here is cover versions of stuff I'm not into, but I can recognize something entertaining and crowd pleasing when I hear it. The cast is made up of typical tokens, but somehow I really didn't seem to mind, no matter how predictable and unoriginal this all is. As Beca, Anna Kendrick is really good as the alternative chick, but, like most people, I found myself being most entertained by Rebel Wilson's turn as the odd and eccentric Fat Amy. She's the clear scene stealer and best thing going on here, though Hana Mae Lee as the super quiet and creepy Lilly was also pretty awesome. The film is really predictable, formulaic, and cheesy, yet I found myself not caring about any of that. It's a feel good crowd pleaser, quite funny, and yeah, even the music performances are done pretty well. It's nothing new, but is done far better than it has any right to be. I say give it a watch.

  I think I was expecting much more. Really not very laugh-out-loud funny, and it really was just like GLEE...which I stopped watching a couple years ago. No real "show stoppers" here, in my opinion. Rather lame...

  A strange mix of cheap humor, great acting, cliche subplots, and an endearing protagonist. Overall not a fantastic film, but a good one, especially thanks to Anna Kendrick. We've seen movies like this before. The plot sinks down to typical teenage/college movie tendencies while the writing and humor don't really hit the nail on the head. But the musical performances are entertaining and full of energy. Kendrick's character is easy to like, relate to, and cheer for. Especially charming is her interactions with the other characters. Predictable, yes. Cheesy, yes. But it leaves you smiling and in a good mood. What else can you ask for?

  "Seriously? Is everyone from the Twilight films musicians and singers? Anna with this, Kristen in Runaways and Into the Wild, Robert with the Twilight films, then Nikki Reed sings with her hubby, and Jackson has his own band as well. I feel like there must have been a lot of jam sessions with these folks while filming those films. I wonder whose next? Back to the movie. It was a lot fun. I liked most of it. But there was plenty of eye rolling worthy moments. Rebel Wilson made this film. She's highly hilarious. I lurv her. Skylar Astin reminded me a lot of Dane Cook. That's who I thought of when I watched his performance. He kind of looks like him too. I liked Anna Kendrick in this too. All in all it was a fun, funny movie. Unfortunately the thing that bugged me the most wasn't even the cheese it served up, it was how they happened to put every funny moment into the trailers. It didn't leave much left to laugh at. Besides that, it was an OK movie. I'd probably watch it again just for Rebels performance. She's my kinda funny."

  An entertaining summer flick about a subject that has been now hounded to death, "Pitch Perfect" is actually a fun and rare comedy that blends youthful concepts and humor with music, and follows young adults without demeaning their intelligence. Set at a New England college two separate acapella groups, one completely male one female, become rivals for a coveted title. Their antics are less than mature and there are some serious gross out moments but overall the comedy itself is as fun and frothy as a cosmopolitan. Though it follows the same tenuous plot structure as many other comedies of its caliber, it is still far and above a better comedy than many out there. Besides quite explicitly putting a female protagonist out there and passing the Bechter test, it also follows an alternative lead while also making jest of her and proving her to be flawed and not an all-powerful rogue like in many films. The songs are especially fun, ranging from 80's power rock to the often forgotten music of indie songstress Lily Allen. This film includes from puppets, hip-hop, and the obligatory Glee references, but not getting bogged down in drama or romance, and remaining upbeat. Some great performances came from all involved. Anna Kendrick, as the outsider thrust into the spotlight and given credence to be herself, astounds once again with her extensive range. Rebel Wilson from "Bridesmaids" shows up to be interestingly self-loving, talented, and aware of herself in a most enticing way. Others with mentionable roles include Elizabeth Banks and John Michael Higgins as acapella announcers, Brittany Snow as a performer, and Adam Devine from the show "Workaholics" puts in an obnoxious turn as a competitor. Simply fun and timeless, it's raucous fun for all.

  Some movies you watch with low expectations, but end up really digging it. "Pitch Perfect" is one of those movies. I have heard a lot of positive things about it, but it's not something that really appeals to me, so I wasn't sure if it would be something I would like. What I got was a very funny and enjoyable movie in the same vein as "Drumline" and "Bring It On". The movie is a group of college girls who compete in an a cappella singing competition with other groups on campus. They are the typical group of misfits who join up and are the dark horses. The performances are all great especially the two leads Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson. Wilson is on the verge of being a big comedic star. She has the "it" factor where just about everything she does is funny and over the top. Kendrick is her usually likeable self, and she comes off very believe able as an aspiring DJ. The music is great and the singing is fantastic. I'm really curious as to why this isn't up for best "Comedy or Musical" at the Golden Globes, as it is both a great musical and very funny. One of the best surprises of the year for sure. Give it a shot, and you'll be surprised too.

  A predictable and by the numbers musical comedy, but elevated by enjoyable performances, witty lines, and some enjoyable musical numbers. The cast is largely good, especially Anna Kendrick (whose talent is underused more than not these days) and Rebel Wilson (who has had memorable, small roles in movies like Bridesmaids). The movie has a little bit of a TV movie feel to it, but it is still enjoyable despite this shortcoming. It's not a revelatory musical or anything really new to the genre, but it is a solid outing that's worth a look even if you don't care for musicals. It's just plain funny.

  In an age of very seldom great music, this film is able to take all of these new-age songs, mix them together, and create fantastic beats, along with a pretty originally written script. Anna Kendrick is great as always and even some unknowns knock it out of the park for their film debuts. I have to say that this film is cliche ridden, and you can see it right from the start, but the music, performances, and overall tone/vibe, make this film watchable alone. The jokes are hilarious, even though the âa copellaâ? pun is used a little too often for my liking. It is filled with colorful costumes and very fun-to-watch musical numbers. âPitch Perfectâ? is the type of film that you can easily get into. It is an extremely strong piece of comedic filmmaking, even though itâ(TM)s pretty cliche. Itâ(TM)s done very well for what it is!

  I must admit the phrase "cu-throat college acapella contest" makes me laugh. But so did the movie. It was a very funny daughter of Glee and the question I have to ask is: don't kids do anything in school besides sing? Not that there's anything wrong with that and my own hs experience (if that's what you would call it) would have been more lighthearted with more singing. But the music was wonderful. The romance between the male and female leads is believable--he pushes in, she pushes away. The relationship between Becca and her father is spot on--father bargaining with her to go to college before persuing what is clearly her passion. The female types in movies never seem to change. Actually, neither do the males. Very entertaining.

  Jason Moore's <i>Pitch Perfect</i> isn't perfect by any means, but a comedic musical it definitely is.</p><p>Despite a predictable storyline, the 110 minutes tend to fly by pretty quickly. The variety of characters and the humor that comes at the expense of them are a highlight and is exactly what keeps this film afloat.</p><p>The musical numbers aren't necessarily exceptional, but they are amusing nonetheless with a mix of modern, as well as older pieces. At times, the story tends to shine away from the music, and focus more on the minor romance and spitting out laughs.</p><p>Anna Kendrick proves worthy to carry a film like this and her singing voice is a nice touch. Rebel Wilson is full of laughs, while Anna Camp and Brittany Snow get by as some major supporting characters. Elizabeth Banks and John Michael Higgins are notable for their commentary.</p><p><i>Pitch Perfect</i> has character and that is enough to recommend for an aca-watch.</p>

The rising action is a bit slow and repetitive with Aubrey mindlessly sticking to her traditional setlist. I don't particularly care for Anna Kendrick's face or acting, and her badass demeanor is mostly costume and make-up, but the song and dance numbers at the end really pump up the jam - especially with our sourpuss lead winning over the adorkable love interest with a song he introduced her to. No spoilers here! Rebel Wilson is hilariously "a ca-awkward," as are the ragtag team of supporting characters, namely the quiet Asian and her sociopathic murmurings, "I ate my twin in the womb."

  Pitch Perfect is a crowd pleaser in the best sense of the word. Even if you even have only a slight interest in hearing a cappella singing, this should make you very happy. Anyone on the edge of their seat wondering how this is all going to play out would have to be under the age of 10. The storyline is pretty basic. Yet it's helped immeasurably by an attractive cast with likable personas. Sure there's the standard archetypes: the bitchy blonde, the slutty brunette, the sensitive heartthrob, etc. But they're undeniably appealing.   "Pitch Perfect" is basically "Bring It On", but with a cappella singing groups instead of cheerleaders...and it's also a million times funnier. Directed by Jason Moore and adapted by Kay Cannon from Mickey Rapkin's novel, "Pitch Perfect" tells the story of Beca (played by Anna Kendrick) an aspiring DJ attending Barden University, who's hobbies include seclusion, nonconforming and listening to Mashups (which kind of makes her a conformist). In an attempt to have Beca become more socially active, her father (who is also a professor at the University) urges her to join a club on campus. But upon perusing each club (especially the glee clubs) she quickly decides that the loner lifestyle is far less humiliating. That is, until a rather awkwardly nude run-in with one of the members of the The Bellas, an all-girl a cappella group on campus that sings nothing but Ace of Base. And since The Bellas are coming off of an embarrassing loss at the previous year's singing competition, Beca, as well as a multitude of other "a ca-losers"; including Fat Amy (as advertized) and Lilly, the girl who can apparently speak no higher than a whisper, are asked to try out in a desperate hope that a group of misfits could be just the thing that sends the conservative Bellas all the way to the finals of the national Glee-esque competition. And if this doesn't sound generic enough, there is also a love story subplot centered around Beca and a guy who looks shockingly like Dane Cook. OK, so if this sounds like every teen flick that you've ever seen, about a misunderstood misfit who ends up helping the popular kids (that were mean to her in the beginning of the movie) win their something-or-other championship/tournament, only to discover that in the end that they are all the same no matter their social standing, then that is only because, from synopsis alone, "Pitch Perfect is exactly that. But before you write this dark horse off, let me just say that due to a sharply satirical script and a surprisingly hilarious, eccentric and immensely engaging cast, which include the likes of Brittany Snow, Hana Mae Lee, Rebel Wilson (as Fat Amy) Skylar Astin and Anna Kendrick, giving a performance which not only solidifies herself as a true leading lady in any genre, but also as the new Kristen Bell, but with talent, "Pitch Perfect" does elevate itself far above the mundane-ness of your everyday teen comedy. In fact, from the non-stop laughs, to the quite satirical teenage dialogue, to the perfectly hilarious "Best in Show"-esque banter from Elizabeth Banks and John Michael Higgins, who play the two commentators of the national a cappella competition, "Pitch Perfect", aside from a curiously abrupt ending, works on EVERY level; even in its rarest of sappy moments. "Pitch Perfect" vs. "Glee": The main reason "Pitch Perfect" works so well is actually quite simple. Where "Glee" is so in love with its self-proclaimed perception that glee clubs are the new "cool", this is a comedy that isn't afraid to make fun of a cappella groups, glee clubs and people randomly breaking out into song, while at the same time presenting interesting characters that audiences want to root for. So, if you where thinking of avoiding this film on the basis of your dislike of "Glee" (or that awful show "The Sing-Off") but find yourself being dragged to see it anyways, no need to worry because chances are you will be happily surprised by what "Pitch Perfect" has to offer. Final Thought: Even though most of the comedy here is on the cruder side, this is still a PG-13 venture. In short, "Pitch Perfect" is not the raunchy female buddy comedy, filled with overlong skits about feces that "Bridesmaids" was. But good news..."Pitch Perfect" is so much more funny and (more importantly) more accessible than "Bridesmaids" will ever be. What I mean by "accessible" is, men will be able to watch this movie without hearing the phrase: "You wouldn't get it because you're a man." All kidding aside, I haven't seen a comedy with this much clever teenage personality since "Easy A". So, in the comedic cesspool that has been 2012, filled with half-assed attempts such as "That's My Boy" and "The Watch", "Pitch Perfect" is not only my pick for the biggest surprise to come out of the genre this year, but also the funniest movie of the year (so far); narrowly edging out "21 Jump Street".   Becca: Alright, let's remix this business. I may be a guy, in his 20s, who writes about movies and Blu-rays, and plays video games, and would have seemingly no reason to want to see a film about competitive a capella groups, but I found the trailer to be slight, but enjoyable, and who can say no to a smile from Anna Kendrick? Pitch Perfect is pretty much what I expected; sometimes charming, sometimes incredibly formulaic, with a soundtrack that will be dated by the time the film leaves theaters, but it's harmless. It has some fun performances and a neat a cappella battle scene that I wanted to see more of, but the standard plot bogs it down. Essentially, if you are a big fan of Bring it On, you will probably have plenty of fun with Pitch Perfect, so take that as you will. read the whole review at thecodeiszeek.com
