Classic 'Family' horror movie. Tobe Hooper must have been really suffocated by the bearded one though as its hard to believe he didn't direct it. That said, the creepy still framed shots are Hooper at his best!

Poltergeist has enough of those epic blockbuster Spielberg moments, and enough of Hobe's skilled horror and humour techniques. As a result, Poltergeist is a damn great film. It starts of lighthearted, but there's a creepy sense that the shit is going to hit the fan. So we get som...( read more)e playful ghosts, then of course trees start attacking children. The family dynamic is believable and excellently played out. We actually feel that each parent has a different relationship with each child and handles them differently. This avoids cliche's of the "absent father" or "overbearing mother". Heather O'Rourke gives one of those child performances that leaves you stunned. Did she have any clue what the hell was going on? It doesn't matter, she rocked. Scary, but never terrifying, and it has one of the funniest images on film. A Hulk action figure riding a horse and tormenting the family. The ending goes a little too epic and special effects heavy.

I saw this and have yet to see what the big deal is. It didn't strike me as terribly scary and explores plenty of conventions that were done better in other (sometimes subsequent) movies. I got fed up with the slime effects and the hunt for the little kid. It's not that this is p...( read more)articularly bad, it just powerfully did not impress me.

What a classic spooky movie from the 80's of a family plagued by things moving about in their house but then it gets worse when young Carol-Ann is snatched by an evil entity from her bedroom at night. They discover their house has been built on a graveyard. To retrieve their daug...( read more)hter from another dimension they enlist the help of paranormal experts. But this only snowballs the situation. I love this movie. It's really frightening once Carol-ann gets kidnapped and starts communicating through the TV. Poor Heather O'Rourke - such a gifted child actor especially in this movie with her iconic phrase "They're Here". It's a shame she died so young. Tobe Hooper and Steven Speilberg combined to make a cracking movie which builds up to the terrifying climax. Highly recommended.
