  Even if there is nothing really special in this light comedy, this is still a very pleasant and funny film thanks to Deneuve and Depardieu, who both shine together (as usual) in an amusing story.

Well made, in a film style appropriate to the late 1970s setting, but it's so lightweight, fluffy and nostalgic that you wonder if there was any point to it all beyond keeping Catherine Deneuve busy.

  At first glance, Suzanne(Catherine Deneuve) seems the picture of contentment, married to Robert Pujol(Fabrice Luchini), owner of an umbrella factory. But then it turns out he forgot her birthday, just as he is carrying on with his secretary Nadege(Karin Viard). And that's not to mention the troubles that Suzanne's two grown children, Joelle(Judith Godreche) and Laurent(Jeremie Renier), are having with their own personal lives. Just as Joelle may be seeking a divorce, because her husband is always away and she may need somebody at home soon to bail their sons out of jail, while Robert is incensed at his son for getting involved with a woman far below his station. He is also angry at his workers which gets him into a pickle and held hostage, leading Catherine to go to Maurice(Gerard Depardieu), an old flame, to help in rescuing him. If all Francois Ozon had intended to do with his latest film "Potiche" had been to subvert 1970's sitcoms in all their tacky glory, he would have still had an entertaining movie on his hands.(Of course, sitcoms don't have Communist characters which is probably why I don't watch them in the first place.) You should not be surprised to hear that he has bigger fish to fry, again returning to family with links to feminism, with a possible debt to "9 to 5" in the bargain. It should be noted that Suzanne's not the one who needs to be liberated, however; she just has to find her role in the world. In the end, the movie is interested in finding a middle ground which could involve operating a business with kindness and imagination.

  Potiche is a 2010 French-Belgian comedy film directed by François Ozon, based on the play of the same name and it is refreshingly easy to watch. This director has rare ability to make a frothy affair with a radical streak! Catherine Deneuve is here in one of her best comic roles and Gerard Depardeieu is her foil. Two of them make this French farce exceptionally pleasant to watch! Everything is happening in 1977 in a small French town, where Suzanne Pujol lives the life of a traditional housewife, doting on her grumpy husband, Robert (Fabrice Luchini), who spends his days running her family's business into the ground with constant fights with the workers and Union. To her husband and her two grown children, Madame Pujol is a trophy housewife with no real power - in other words: UNE POTICHE! Changes are inevitable when the workers of the umbrella factory go again on strike to protest draconian working conditions. Hell breaks loose and Robert suffers heart-attack and Suzanne is left to run the company with the help of her former boyfriend, the town mayor, Maurice Babin (Gerard Depardieu). That is how the Pandora's box of deception becomes open! It is delightful, empowering and charming movie. Enjoy it!

  Perhaps a little too slight to be entirely successful, François Ozon's film is nonetheless a fun pastiche/political comedy with a wonderful performance from Catherine Deneuve and is made with a winningly kitsch sensibility. Underneath the bright colours, 70s fashions and outdated attitudes there is a slight bitterness and darkness that could have done with a bit more exploration, and it's interesting to think that actually this story could have been made in about four different styles. So whilst this isn't an essential Ozon film, it's definitely a fascinating one.

  Nothing complex but this film entertains. Catherine Deneuve shines as always and the overall look and charm of the movie makes it a fun time. Gerard Depardieu looks terrible though.
