Practical Magic

Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Goran Visnjic, Stockard Channing, Dianne Wiest

Actor Griffin Dunne improves a bit on his first film as a director, Addicted to Love, with this drama-comedy about a family of witches. Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock play spell-casting sisters of d...( read more  read more... )ifferent temperaments: the former is a high-living, free-spirited sort, while Bullock's character is a homebody who can't get around a family curse that kills the men in their lives. A widowed single mom, Kidman gets into a jam with an abusive Bulgarian (Goran Visnjic) and is helped out by her sibling, but the result brings a good-looking, warm, inquisitive cop (Aidan Quinn) into their lives. The film has a variety of tonal changes--cute, scary, glum--that Dunne can't always effectively juggle. But the female-centric, celebratory nature of the film (the fantasies, the sharing, the witchy bonds) is infectious, and supporting roles by Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing as Kidman and Bullock's magical aunts are a lot of fun. --Tom Keogh

A very enjoyable film with a very good cast including a very young Camilla Belle. A mix of Rom-Com/drama that has some dark moments as a family of witches try to break a curse within their family.

Persecuted as a witch by the puritans in the 17th Century, Maria Owens places a spell on herself. But this has had the result of causing all the men that the subsequent generations of Owens women marry to die unnaturally. In the present day, Sally Owens wants to maintain the pret...( read more)ence that she is not a witch in order to be accepted by the community. But then the man that Sally marries is killed in an accident in the street. Her more wayward sister Gillian is passionately involved with East European cowboy Jimmy Angelo but things go wrong when he abducts her and Sally, and Sally is forced to place a lethal dose of belladonna in his tequila. Panicking, the sisters attempt a resurrection spell and when this goes wrong they bury Jimmy in the garden. But then detective Gary Hallett comes investigating Jimmy's disappearance and they are forced to cover up. However Sally finds herself starting to fall for Gary. For the most part Griffin Dunne is reasonably successful at playing the film as the white witchcraft comedy. Nicole Kidman has the lighter part, playing the wayward ditz. Sandra Bullock gets the lion's share of the film, she does her Shy Girl Next Door thing but seems to spend the whole film getting flustered. But the script never quite pairs the differences between the two sisters off against one another.
