Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire Reviews and Ratings

  • January 1, 2010
This was good for an average American drama. I have seen these kind of situations before where it gets preachy as it was decently scripted. Some scenes looked over dramatized trying to feel so sorry for Precious despite the fact was produced by Oprah Winfrey. To be honest Gaboure...( read more)y Sidibe acting performance was great however it will be tough compititon between Sandra Bullock and Meryl Streep for the Golden Globes. Also Mo'Nique's perfomance was great too as she was a intimidating mother.

cried for like the entire movie
    inspiring

It was okay. It was entertaining. I think what I really enjoyed were the performances by Mo'Nique, Lenny Kravitz, and Mariah Carey. I was impressed. I hope that Mo'Nique wins SOME kind of award for her performance because she was great. I loved how laid back Lenny Kravitz was. I ...( read more)had no idea he could act. But Mariah Carey was probably the biggest surprise. I think I might enjoy the book more than the film. I wasn't expecting a complete happy ending wrapped up with a neat bow, but at the end I was just left sitting there waiting. I think it does deserve critical acclaim and everything and I'm happy that a low-budget indie flick was able to get so much exposure. But the film was just OK for me.

I read the novel first and compared to that, the movie falls short. But the movie is also different. I would say it was alright.
  • December 31, 2009
Beautiful movie - loved the book and the movie was just as good
  • December 30, 2009
Wow! Depressing as anything but strong performances including a decent cameo by Mariah Carey looking not very pretty I might add but nice to see her glamoured down. Hard to watch movie but good for what it was and for what it was trying to say.

Precious is a heartbreaking story about a girl born in Harlem. Raised by abusive parents, she lived a horrible existence. Her father's sexual abuse gave her two children. The first being born with down syndrome. Her mother played the welfare system, as well as physically a...( read more)nd emotionally abusing Precious for supposedly taking away her man. CRAZY!!! Sad as this story is, it's also very inspirational. To see how much a few caring strangers helped her to begin to make her own life better. For herself and for her children.

I found this movie to have quite an important message. If you see someone who looks sad or lonely or down on their luck, and you have something to offer, a good word, a helping hand, a shoulder to cry on, a place to stay. Whatever you can do, please, we have to help those who are less fortunate, if we can. Sometimes just a little help can do so much.

Great performances by all, but Mo'Nique, oh snap! That woman scared the crap outta me!!! She truly deserves an Oscar for her performance. If you haven't yet, you should really go see Precious!

Great inspirational story!!! A real tearjerker!!!
  • December 30, 2009
AWESOME!!! My prediction is that Mo'Nique will WIN THE OSCAR for Best Supporting Actress. REMEMBER . . . you heard it here FIRST!!!

I went into this expecting to be an emotional wreck when it was over, but that never happened. Though it was quite disturbing and very moving.

I will say that the cast is AMAZING and they all do a phenomenal job.

Especially the two leads (Sidibe and Mo'Nique) who really ...( read more)loose themsleves in their roles and drag you right into their dark and twisted world. While Paula Patton as Precious's teacher, gives a very powerful performance and offers one of the few rays of hope in Precious's otherwise bleak world.

And, I never thought I would EVER say (much less write) a kind word about Mariah Carey as I think she is a talentless singer and one of the most annoying personalities on the planet...but (mark this on your calendars) I have to say that her performance was solid and totally believable. Her brief but powerful part is well worth noting.

My only problem with the film is with the WAY that the story is told, especially the fantasy/escape scenes. While I can see someone feeling like Precious needed some sort of escape/relief (for fear her story might otherwise be far too horrific for some people to take), but to me it really cheapens the feel of the film and trivializes to some extent the overall power of the story.

Because of this It felt to me (at times) a little too much like a (R rated version ) of a "Lifetime Movie" or an "After School Special". But perhaps that was the intent...to make it accessible to a wider audience?
  • December 29, 2009
Looks good but why does it HAVE to be rated R?
  • December 29, 2009
Saw it twice in the theater at full NYC prices - 'nuff said.
  • December 29, 2009
Violent, sex, no morality but Brad Pitt was superb!

Fantastic movie!! Here is an interesting story plot that centralizes around the life of a young pregnant teenager in 80's Harlem. Her life experiences have been extremely tough, and with secrets of her own it hinders her belief that there is more in life than what she has always...( read more) known. Believing that she is not smart, she keeps to herself and cares for a harsh mother whom also heavily contributes to the negative viewpoint for Precious. With a deep dark family secret, Precious lives within her dreams and hopes that someday things will be different. Amazing performance by Gabourey Sidibe. Mo'Nique, Paula Patton, Lenny Kravitz, and Mariah Carey stars. Definitely worth seeing!
  • December 29, 2009
Amazing movie filled with moments of horror and fantasy and faith. Mo'Nique is the best thing in the movie. she is frightening and sad. Gabourey Sidibe is excellent and takes you inside the mind of this beautiful young spirit fighting to live. It is an excellent movie. I cannot p...( read more)raise it enough. See it again and again.
  • December 29, 2009
The performances in this film are powerful. It's hard to believe that people can be so horrifically abusive to each other but I guess it happens. Monique's performance steals the show, but Sidibe is excellent too.
  • December 29, 2009
The acting was wonderful, but the movie was not the best. I did not like the way it ended and felt they should have shown how Precious dealt the mental aftermath.

The most moving and emotional film of the year. It triggers questions of your own life and makes you consider how lucky some of us have it. But the best thing of this film is Sidibe's performance. Breathtaking.
  • December 28, 2009
Thiis movie looks gd buh sad
  • December 28, 2009
Best film this year yet! damn Mo'nique deserves an award for that performance.

i want to watch this movie soo bad!
  • December 27, 2009
This is a very moving story. Some of the previews and trailers do it no justice though, they make it out to be a fairy tale movie, when there's little fantasy about it. Yes she (precious, the lead) wants to be someone else, but she gradually learns life isn't like that and she's ...( read more)stuck with who she is. For those thinking it's a clever piece of a large coloured girl pretending to be white as some trailers may suggest, that plays VERY little in the movie. The trailers should have focused not on her day dreams, but on the 'days'.

This is a fantastic story of a girl, doomed from the very beginning, struggling like no other... and takes it, but slowly starts to think for herself and her actions change as she learns. Very clever writing and acting to perceive this, after all, it's slow moving, as is the rate she educates herself... but on this occasion the speed of the storyline is actually totally relevant to the movie. I don't want to spoil the story but trust me, this is a film which centres around a remarkably challenged individual in every facet of life and shows how she copes. The acting is first rate and totally believable for the situation, which I again stress is totally and utterly an up-hill battle.

To anyone that enjoys proper drama...WATCH THIS MOVIE. Please
  • December 27, 2009
Not an easy watch and it was a grower on me. Worth getting through the tough to get to the....rest of the tough. Strong performances and some very harsh material
  • December 27, 2009

  • December 26, 2009
Incredibly moving. The acting was spectacular. I hope we get to see more of Sidibe, because she's a mind-blowingly great actress. And Mo'Nique? Damn that lady scared the shit out of me throughout the film. That lady deserves Oscar! Go see Precious!
  • December 26, 2009
My instant favourite for the fast approaching award season has to be this little gem. Relentless and constantly surprising, this is a film full of darkness for forever headed towards hope. The biggest surprise of the film has to be the cast. Gabourey Sidibe stuns in her restraine...( read more)d but ferocious debut performance. Even two musical stars (Kravitz and Carey) show up and give very good performances. Both are unrecognisable. The real star of this show though is Mo'Nique. An 'actress' that has, in the past, irritated me. Even her stand-up is too vulgar/crass and unfunny for my taste. Here, she excels on every level. It's hard to gain sympathy and understanding towards a character that is so unlikable and has ignored the sexual abuse of her child for years. Incredibly, Mo'Nique does it, keeping her distance from the audience before the films final moments. Lee Daniels directs well, mixing the real and fantasy without going overboard. He knows when to use fancy camera work, and when it's time for his actors to take charge. This film is difficult but riveting.

oscar, oscar, oscar all over this movie!!
  • December 25, 2009
A lot more positive than advertised.
  • December 25, 2009
Very powerful I must say. Monique is my girl. She really played her part. A touching movie. To know that we have some people in life that are REALLY like this really scares me. Loved it!
  • December 25, 2009
The most painful movie I've seen in maybe forever. Very very Deep, must see, hard to ever watch again, but great.
  • December 25, 2009
I wanted to love this movie. I should read the novel. I think the actors gave it their strongest, but somewhere it didn't totally translate. Not as powerful as I would have thought. But I'm proud of the movie. To me it was a like a modernized version of The Color Purple. I ...( read more)felt for Precious and her hopeful heart and soul, I admired the teacher and her commitment to help and nurture. I even felt for the mother she was villianized but she was also a victim. The story hits hard and I'm glad it was brought to the screen. Wherever there is hurt there is still hope.
  • December 25, 2009
I enjoyed this movie. It is a must see. Monique and Gabourey really out did themselves in this one
