MCT:July 30, 2008The bad boy with the cloaking shield and nasty toys returns to decimate 1997 Los Angeles in this 1990 sequel to the hit flick. Not as much fun the second time around because it's too much like a videogame where the predator has the upper hand until the ridiculous ending. Ooh, there's an Alien skull from Alien in it too. They intended to have a crossover, but it wouldn't come out for years. That doesn't make it a great movie, or even all that good a movie, either.

This could have worked a lot better. There are books about the predator that are better than this and should have been utilised. This isn't Glover's fault, I actually liked his struggle against the Predator more than Arnie's. It's a shame the dialogue and plot weren't up to it.

Good fun, although considerably weaker than the first one. Still, definitely worth watching for fans of sci-fi, action and horror.

MCT:July 16, 2008Jim and John Thomas do a good job in introducing a completely new premise in this sequel by placing the action in the city. Attention is brought to global warming and gang warfare predominant in L.A. during the late 1980's. However, the script is nowhere as tight as the first Predator; there are simply too many characters in the first half making it feel clunky. The movie is full of cheesy, uber-macho dialogue and feels dated. Its saving grace are the revelations about the alien and its world.

Decent plot with Danny Glover taking center stage. He's no Schwarzenegger, but he's just as tough and resourceful. Half a dozen memorable characters keep the plot flowing between the action scenes, but none are as verbal as Paxton. His character's cockiness is reminiscent of his role of Hudson in Aliens. Personally, I enjoy watching this movie just to spot where Adam Baldwin pops up. It's as good as the first by replacing muscular soldiers with average people in a far more hostile environment than the jungle. However, Gary Busey is not a good replacement for good-guy-gone-bad, Carl Weathers, but he's easier to despise.

I love the Predator. They are probably my second favorite alien species (Nebari's are just to kool looking to be beat).
This sequel wasn't everything I really wanted it to be. The best part use you get to learn a little bit more about the alien. Both how it looks and acts. -

MCT:May 30, 2008Let me start off the review by saying, the first "Predator" movie was awesome, it was a great sci-fi action, so what did they do wrong with the sequel? Let's just say EVERYTHING. In "Predator 2" Arnold Schwarzenegger is replaced by Danny Glover, the jungle to inner city LA, the guerrilla with drug lords and the suspenseful action with a dull thriller like plot. Danny Glover is a total miscast as a cop out to solve a series of mysterious deaths and the rest of the cast are not impressive either. It's not all bad, some highlights are that the Predator got to show of some new weapons and this is where we first got a hint about "AVP" (Alien Vs. Predator). But after watching "Predator 2" you can easily tell why there was never a third film, they really took the franchise in the wrong direction.

MCT:May 22, 2008Utter garbage - this was the first attempt to combine Predator with another 80's franchise (Lethal Weapon), and it should have proven once and for all that nonsensical combinations could not possibly be good. Nevertheless, no one seems to have learned the lesson. (Although it could work with "Revenge of the Nerds V: Alien vs Predator vs Nerd")

You know what is especially sad...the fact that this movie was made nearly 20 years ago and it is still better than AVP-R.
This movie is actually pretty good. I mean it is actually surprisingly good. Not only is good for the comical aspect of putting Danny Glover as a lead in a big budget action movie. But it is a symbol of 80's movie culture, a time when cheep thrills were delivered by no plot and action heroes who could hold their own.
This movie could have been in the same league as Total Recall, Escape from New York and Demolition Man for its cheesy yet enticing violent view of the future at the dawn of a new millennium. Which is exactly the direction this franchise needed to be taken in at the time.
This movie advances on where the first left, and hits the ground running. Having Glover drive straight into a downtown gun fight wearing a bright yellow shirt and Grand-dad sized trousers. This of course captures the preadator's attention and good ol' Mr Predator, or "pussy face" to his friends, decides that after the way Mr Glover blows people away point blank with a shotgun that he might actually be a worthy adversary for a fight.
Oh and the Predator in this one doesn't like gangs in general so goes around picking off any ASBO in the meantime. (Damn why can't he come to Clifton)
I can't understand some people... for those who say the plot of this movie isn't quite as good as the first. I hate to burst their bubbles but its basically the same plot! The only difference is that the main protagonist in this is Danny Glover.
For those who don't believe me...
Predator 1 Plot... Missionaries go into the jungle on a secret mission. Oops they start to get picked off one by one by a Predator. Arnie takes it personally. Hunts down predator. The end.
Predator 2 Plot... Los Angeles is apparently an urban war zone in the late 90's. Predator starts picking people off including a certain Mr Glover's detective buddies. Glover takes it personally. Hunts down predator. The end.
I bet these are the same types of people who think this movie is incredibly tacky but consider Robocop and the Terminator as modern day sci-fi classics.
The first half of this movie does kinda suck. For all its action and expensive budget it is let down by appallingly terrible acting!
The first main draw-back for this movie is the fact that if you intend to cash in on something you need to give the audience what they want. If they want Arnie... no way is Glover going to be a suitable replacement. He just doesn't have the same on screen persona! So without that same sort of gimmick people are already going to be disappointed.
The next major flaw: Bill Paxton. Can't act. Seriously. Who the hell told him he could? Did the director of this movie loose a bet or something?
The rest of the cast wasn't good either but they at least could be tolerated.
Oh and where the hell did Robert Davi disappear off to... if only he could have been replaced Paxton this movie would have been a hell of a lot better!
Finally when the movie's final act takes off and its a showdown between Glover and the Predator the movie gets its full momentum. Sadly by this time a lot of people had already lost interest.
A movie that was destined to fail but for what it's worth it's not as bad as everyone says it is.
Oh and for those who are fans of the whole AVP mythology... look out for the Alien skull on the Predator's trophy wall. I thought it was a nice touch.
Deserves to be remembered as a pop-cultured 80's classic. Pretty good stuff... still kinda sucky though. -

+ Lame plot line, terrible acting, kept going on and on and on and on, lame plot line.. I think you get my point.
This movie gets 2 and a half stars only because I fully loved the Predator costume. (as always)
