Though it's PAINFULLY slow, Prom Night turns out to be a hysterically fun example of an 80s slasher flick. Jamie Lee Curtis is great in her role as the leading lady, and the rest of the cast fits nicely. A lot of solid fun; definitely take a peek at this one if you're into slashers.

Cheap slasher movie really lacks in the quality department. Some campy fun, and decent use of the Red Herring formula, but overall, not very scary, and the whole disco thing gets pretty annoying after awhile.

I can say this version is a LOT better than the crappy new Prom Night, the story is dumb, the whole teacher thing is played out, very original guys.

Finally got to see this one again. Limp story of killer taking revenge on a handful of brats. Ok, but not as good as fans of the genre report.

eesh.... my mother rented the wrong one. thought it was the re-make. i've never been so bored. not even gory. bad acting. the music was so damn annoying...

ew!! the part where the guy's head rolled out in a pool of blood was disgusting!!! it was really bloody. looked so fake.

Saw this movie when I was only 10 years old thought it was scary back then but now its like not that scary at all. But I still like to see this movie once in a while .

One of the movies that helped create JLC's scream queen title Prom Night ticks all the boxes of a horror/slasher movie of the time which doesn;t make it a classic but it at least is fulfilling. The background and motive are a lot stronger than the remake i can;t help but be reminded of Carrie with a different motive tho.

Not exactly what I would call a horror classic, but, hey, I gotta give it points for one helluva cool chase scene!

Prom Night is a very lame slasher film, this movie has all the clichés and the typical situations for this kind of films, but most of the scenes are pretty boring.
Jamie Lee Curtis did a great job, theres no doubt she´s one of the best scream queen of all the time.
If this is the original, I can´t imagine how will be the remake, I know I´m a masochist in movie matters... -
This was yet another dated horror flick from the 80's, kind of a halfway between Slumber Party Massacre's cheapness and Carrie's main theme... kind of useless, actually.
JL Curtis is amazing, still. -
A staple for me on WKBD TV 50 Detroit, after all these years, Prom Night is still "alright"! Could have used a little more gore and boobs and a little less DISCO but its still pretty fun.

loved the movie.... hated the ending........ the black dude shpuld have died so that he could be with his dead girlfriend and all of his dead friends.

Teenagers at prom night are at the mercy of a killer who might be connected to the death of a kid in their ranks years before. (Don't bother with the 2008 remake).

One of the earliest slasher film genres, but sure looks dated now! Starring Leslie Nielsen and Jamie Lee Curtis, it starts very slow and is quite predictable. It does have a couple of good moments though. Just had a re-make done also!

Okay, I got a weird vibe from this movie. It's bad, but not enough to be completely kitsch.
I'm a fan of bad movies. I know that if I go into something that is going to be absolutely horrific, I can get a kick out of it. (Example: Black Samurai) But for the most part, I watch good movies. We have a lot of customers who just watch absolute trash and I can't get past that. Every rental: trash. I have to save those bad movies for few and far between. I won't lie: Prom Night is pretty terrible, but the weird thing is that there are redeeming moments.
The bad: Leslie Nielsen. Nothing he does is awful in particular, but it doesn't help when a room full of guys start singing the Naked Gun / Police Squad theme every time he walks on screen. I know he used to be a serious actor. But there were cops! And he was there! And how can you not? Secondly, the script is something awful. These really false moments. Third, the film itself is pretty poorly done. Yeah, I get that this is pretty low budget and that we can't afford something called "sets", but this looked like my friend Dan's Urban Archeology. And really, that kid is way too cool under pressure. She was totally down for covering up the body at the end. Finally, the early 80's always bring about a good time. It's bad enough that the prom is Disco themed, but having a dance sequence? C'mon!
Actually, f*ck finally. I have more things to gripe about. I mean, cromagnon bad guy who doesn't own a suit. I mean, that kid was totally evil for evil's sake. And the stoner nerd getting the girl after a week and loses his virginity to her without any rhyme or reason.
But then there are things I liked! I mean, there's this really almost touching subplot of one of the girls dealing with a possible rape scenario. Then you have this flawed, realistic killer. I mean, that killer dealt with nature very poorly. He got his ass kicked left and right and he was uaully down for a while. There was also this wierd hidden frustration with all of his failure. Very bizarre.
There's the "twist" end that always can be found in these kinds of movies, especially from this period. The twist really seems to come out of left field. The big problem is that there is little investment in who the killer is so much as that killer is going to tear up that prom.
Highlight of the movie for me? The decapitation. It's very quick and very "wow". Like The Omen. (I think it was Lee Remick), I just got that "Holy sh*t" vibe. Yeah, it's a fun movie, but I'm not sure it is going to be very memorable. -
The only reason for now why i wanna watch it is because it was once a top grosser. The movie appears to be slight cheap on the trailer. The trailer is okay although you can easily make speculations on how the story would end.

I didn't like this movie at all. I want to see the new one only cause it was Brittany Snow. Hopefully it will be better.

Prom Night is a 1980 horror film about the death of a young girl creates a killer who strikes on the night of a prom.
Prom Night is generally considered a slasher film classic. I would probably have to agree. This is most likely due to the star being Jamie Lee Curtis. However, I'd call it a classic due to it being the first cliché of a slasher film to have to plot about the accidental death of someone and then somebody gaining revenge over it. There are numerous other horror titles with the same storyline, such as 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' and 'The House on Sorority Row' but 'Prom Night' is the true original of it. -
I have never seen the whole thing and i cant wait to see the new one but this one will always be better.

I thought that it would be good to see the original Prom Night movie before watching the upcoming remake. I didn't expect it to be good, with a 4.9 imdb rating, but I didn't expect it to be this bad. It's more or less a lousy copy of Halloween, with the same starlet, Jamie Lee Curtis. The killer is silly, clumsy and not at all scary. Not much blood and gore either. The climax and final twist are truly pathetic, and in complete sync with the rest of the crappy movie. I will probably see the 2008 remake, but I go in with really low expectations.

Honestly, I dug this movie. I know it's shit but every slasher needs a four-minute dance off. Every single one.

My respect for Jamie Lee Curtis shot through the roof after seeing that scene.
The rest of this movie is complete and total crap, featuring some heinous child actors and some of the most astonishingly bad cinematography in a Hollywood blockbuster, but as far as sheer kinetic energy goes this can't be beat. It's a rapid fire explosion of campy horror fun, especially once you see that dance scene: Prom Night has begun.
