Plot:
"Protagonist" explores extremism and the limits of certainty. Inspired by Greek drama, this visually inventive documentary weaves the stories of four men--a German terrorist, a bank robber, an "ex-gay...( read more

Minimally, this film is engaging and intellectually stimulating. There are parts of it that are quite fascinating. And it has puppets! OK, the puppets aren't the big selling point. If you are into the idea of the life journey, knowing thyself, and personal redemption, then you may well be interested in this. If you aren't into those kinds of things, you may still be interested in the puppets.
An extraordinarily refreshing and unique documentary.
Yu's parallel storytelling is fascinating and very well put together - never once does the film feel disjointed or have scenes that feel out of place. The talking heads all provided extraordinary stories... my favorite was the martial arts fanatic, who just exuded so much charisma and enthusiasm into retelling his life story that it was absolutely thrilling to watch everything he had to say.
Using puppets, Yu explores the connection between current life and the typical Euripidean dramatic structure and exposes stunning similarities. We see the same theme of self-mastery and obsession interwoven between the stories of puppets and talking heads, and it's an absolutely enthralling study of the human condition.
Although the method Yu went about to do this film may seem a bit gimmicky on the surface, everything works well together and the composition is seamless. This was such a bold film, and I think it certainly was quite an accomplishment.
This was a wonderfully fresh and unique idea for a documentary - and it certainly brings new life into the genre. Instead of sticking to one event, Protagonist shows that a documentary can be absolutely limitless in content with the right mind behind it.
This was an interesting film. Kinda strange, but at the same time, introspective. I wasn't crazy about the puppetized Greek tragedies, as much as the actual character's stories.
This visually fasinating(with all the Greek myth tiltle animations) documentary really surprised me. Four men who come from extremely different background somehow share the same pattern of life, and with staged Greek drama, Jessica Yu used puppets to act out scenes which connect all the characters. It's hard to do a documentary with only narrations and couple achieval footage, but Yu really pulled it off with the puppets and some great music score, making the film extra diverse.
This may be one of the truest movies I've ever seen, and one of the best documentaries also. Each of the "protagonists" speaks very frankly about their greatest hopes and fears, and their stories help shed new light on some old stereotypes. The story I gained the most out of was the mexican bank robber. This movie really takes what you think you know and shows you that you don't know anything about anyone but yourself, and that's all you'll ever know.
