Mais um filme baseado em uma história real sobre uma mulher que sofre abuso do marido. Prisão, tribunal e injustiças. Nada incomum. Mas é interessante a trajetória dessa indiana e admirável.
Director Jag Mundhra expends so much energy and screen time to sway us to take Kiranjit's side -- really, we're on her side, we're on her side -- that he doesn't have much left over for anything else. There are some tremendous lessons of courage and justice to be taken from Provoked, however the drama is often so forced that there are times when the film is hard to watch
This is a fantastic movie, and one I most likely won't forget soon. This movie is deeply touching and moving. Miranda Richardson gives a stellar performance, and so does Aishwarya Rai and Naveen Andrews.
Well acted, brilliant movie with a really good plot. True story that really captures the heart of the audience. Aishwarya Rai is simply amazing, as usual.
Be a woman, in every planet where man never appreciate the woman is always the same. And the blame should come to the mother who didn't teach her son how to treat a woman ... True story. Amazing movie
It's the true story of a Punjabi woman named Kiranjit Ahluwalia who leaves India to marry a London-based guy, only to be badly abused. She ends up in prison for murdering her abusive husband. All these may sound like normal story or plot of movie but its the meaning behind this story that is worth mentioning. There are a lot of men who abused their wife and a lot of wives suffered in silence because of scared or maybe because of children. However, this movie let us know that suffering in silence is not the way out. Eventually it will be more hurting to the women and to the children especially. Patience has limits. Any abuse suffering can only be done to the limit, a lot of women died or commit sucide because of that. Religion has a way of making people to do things as well. According to this movie, traditional indian custom is that women should get married, bear children and be a good submissive housewife (Of course modern thinking are much different). Through her story, the nature of british law was changed forever. "Regina vs. Ahluwalia became the monumental court case that changed the nature of British law forever, as affords the 'Provocarion Defense' - the acceptance of Battered Woman's Syndrome as a legal state of mind, in accordance with defendants who have suffered extended physical abuse at the hands of a spouse." (Taken at the ending of the movie)
"In 2001, Kiranjit Ahluwalia was honoured by PrimeMinister Tony Blair's wife Cherie Booth with the Asian Woman role model award for her courage." (Taken at the ending of the movie) Prison to a lot of prisoners are a confinement and cage but to her, its her first step towards freedom. If you have the chance to watch it, watch it. Rated 6.3 by IMBD. Enjoy!!:)
This a difficult one, I was torn between the usual skepticism of watching a movie with cheesy Indian stereotypes and the actual subject matter which portrays a very serious issue, and for once I willed myself not to be too critical on the scanty storyline and tongue in cheek moments. Having said that, I was equally disturbed by some of the violence that I saw in this film because of the raw reality it portrayed. So I will refrain from calling it a good movie, and after watching it a few months on since it has been released I wonder if it has really made such an impact on the indian society; but I applaud the director for striking up a very serious issue which has made a difference from the usual portrayal of British Asian Immigrants in the style of 'Goodness Gracious Me' Stereotype which would probably be more appealing to a wider audience. He has sucessfully stripped away a very uncomfortable subject matter that is too often swept under the carpet and ignored by everyone, that is why it fully desreves its five star rating.
Aishwarya Rai is definitely one beautiful woman, but beauty can't carry this film. This movie lack personality. It was interesting, yeah, but it was just there. Rai was just there looking pretty and nothing much. It has no feeling.
Woah. Really great movie. Intense through to the end. Everyone should see this movie, if not for Ash, Miranda Richardson and Nandita Das's performances, for the message it tries to perpetuate.
Reading lots about this movie I was eager to watch it. So I managed to get the VCD today and I have to say that the show is powerful. There were a few scenes I just could not hold my tears back. On the other hand, it was not up to expectation. Aiswarya Rai did a good job experiencing the characters feeling and making people feel it too. But, did anyone notice... she didn't talk much. She was potraying a timid person, I would say. However, this film definately is a wake up call for all those being abused.. Be it male or female.. WAKE UP!!!!
I couldnt give this movie more than three stars, however before watching it I could think of it worth more than five, but it wasnt as what I had expected.
Ash is a good preformer at some points, but her play wasnt so catchy in this movie. There was something in her expression that wasnt so sympathetic, but sounded more of guilty in her part. I didnt find the husband's play so catchy either.
Aprt from that, there were some falls in the movie that made the story sound more artificial. For instance: Kirnajit did not know any good English, however her understanding English even understanding of the law terms were so perfect. She did not need any translator at any point.
I havent read the book written by the real personality, Kiranjit Ahluwalia, but reading her words published at several websites and matching the movie, I can say, the movie is not so attractive as is the real life story of Kiranjit.
There were manythings missing in the movie, in the acting of the main charecters in the movie that made it less attractive and less of telling a true story of a true life.
A heart renching true tail of the courage of one woman to break tradition and speak up for herself. An eye opener into the opression often felt of women in those circumstances. I truely felt for her. Though the story line was great, I didnt enjoy the movie as much as I could of, I felt that it wasnt one of Aishwarya Rai's best performances. If you cry during movies, bring tissues.. this movie made me weepy
Hmm.. well.. not really sure what to say..
The movie was okay. I only watched it ´cause I know its a true story and I only used to live a couple of minutes away from Surrey :S
Well Aishwarya Rai is such a great actress but this really wasn´t her best performance.. the acting was sorta shite XD It was actually quite disgusting that she put up with living with her bastard of a husband for 10 years.. he deserved to be set on fire! Yeah erm overall, not so great, but interesting.
This movie was absolutely fantastic. Aishwarya Rai gives a stunning performance and really entices the audience to connect with her character. Thie story is stirring and emotional. This movie was truely remarkable and highly reccomend it to enyone who enjoys fine film is over the mainstreem and cliche!
Provoked is based on the true story of Kiranjit Ahluwalia and the film is a serious attempt to address the issue of domestic violence. While it does feel a little worthy at times, the film avoids descending into sentimentality largely due to the stellar performances of the three main characters.
The real-case of Kiranjit Ahluwalia was a legal landmark that helped create a new defence in court for women suffering from domestic violence. Provoked successfully shows how one woman's courage helps fuel a national campaign that led to a change in the law.
