The ultimate teenage rebellion, angst and outspoken movie ever. Forget American Pie and all those other poser teen movies, this is the definitive rebel yell from one of the most rebellious Hollywood stars.
You have to love the soundtrack to the movie, it rocks hardcore. And so does the local pirate DJ, who happens to be a discreet, shy teen suffering in the prison which his life has become, and opens his mind and attitude to others in a literal "call to arms" to take back their lives, their identity, against a totalitarian school bent on eradicating their very souls.
Its a hard hitting, yet funny look at the repressed teens of our society and the unity of kids against their school, parents and government for limiting them, turning them into the opposites of what they really feel, what they really want.
Cause in the end, as the message goes, to be a teenager, to have a life, to have your own mind, to have an open minded education, to have the ability to think for yourself.... its a God given right to be YOU.
Awesome flick for when it came out. The chicks were hot and there was nudity, good soundtrack......at your cereal with a fork and do your homework in the dark.
slater is great as a pirate dj broadcasting from his bedroom, whilst becoming a sensation with all the local teens at the school which he also goes to, he is also a shy guy, and whilst in school cant connect with anyone, but while on air its different, the devil inside comes out, events turn when a suicide happens, and he talked to him on air, so local authorities get involved to track down the station, he is torn between shutting down or stading upn for all problems with high schol ife, and tenage life in general, slater a year after heathewrs shows he really was a talent in them days, and true romance a few years later, this film suceeds in bringing up many problems with american youth in early 90s, samantha mathis a well showing some talent, and a kick ass soundtrack too, one of the best
A gem of a movie that speaks as much to the disenfranchised youth as THE BREAKFAST CLUB did at times. This is one of Christian Slater's best performances.
Freedom of speech on teh radio?
I thought those days were dead.
But this movie just let people know you can be heard and that young folks can have a voice if they want.
I REMEMBER THIS FROM THE EIGHTYS AND NW WHEN I WATCH IT I LIKE AT THE TIME IT WAS THE BEST MOVIE...
I'LL STILL WATCH IT. I CAN GET THE DVD SUPER-CHEAP AT WALMART SO HELL YEAH.
This is a good one. A movie about teens who have had enough and when no one will listen they will do it themselves. Great acting all around and a nice way to do a movie that features a guy talking to himself on the radio.
This movie got lots of buzz at the time, but it's mostly Slater babbling on while being shunned at school. So, those who secretly fantasize about being stars might enjoy it.
This film is ahead of its time really. What Christian Slater is doing with his pirate radio show is kind of the fore-runner to podcasting! Best Slater film from this time period I would say, and one of the few that really holds up. I think a modern day version of it centered around podcasting as apposed to pirate radio would be an interesting idea.
I had never seen this until just now and I actually liked it. I thought the way the kids were getting motivated to speak their mind at school and stuff was a little too exaggerated but all in all in was alright. And i liked the girl's character...I would've been attracted to her in H.S. as well.
