Unbelievably cool monster and an unbelievably satisfying ending.

Fantastic movie, especially for being one from a few decades ago! =D Why is this movie not as well known as the "Friday the 13th" and "Halloween" flicks?!

Pumpkinhead is cool looking, but he isn't my favorite demon/monster. I respect it b/c its 80s and they don't make ghouls like him/it anymore - screw CGI. Lastly, I don't like what happens to poor Billy, and they over did the griminess of the hillbilly kids. The end.

    Pretty good for it's time.

The legendary Stan Winston and the brilliant Lance Henriksen join up for this competent horror movie. Evidently, Winston was more than just an effects wizard, he was also capable of writing/directing too. The pacing and tension work well, it has layers and the production design i...( read more)s fucking gorgeous - especially the pumpkin patch. Pumpkinhead himself is one cool monster, and apart from a slip near the end where the film slows down this is way better than any Halloween/FT13th.

Lance H. is a great actor. And plus, demon movies are coolness.

I HATE THESE KINDS OF MOVIES. its unfortunate i seen it.

An alright vengeance story with great practical effects, this is a pretty by the numbers horror flick, but has some nice bits with the monster. The perpetually foggy forest that the creature lurks in, the remote cabin the witchy lady who brings forth the demon resides in, there'...( read more)s tons of things to enjoy here.

Lance Henriksen is convincing as the grief-stricken father, but honestly only up to a point: He gets all conscience-stricken as soon as someone is killed for killing his boy? What was he expecting? Harsh language and spankings for the guilty? He summoned a demon with blood rituals for fuck's sake!

Fun rental, dunno how often I'd re-watch it tho.

  • August 8, 2009
The story was really quite good. Henriksen always delivers a solid performance. The creature effects were really well done. I recommend it.
  • August 6, 2009
    Funny, surprisingly funny.
  • July 18, 2009
Saw this along time ago, its very basic and formulaic but the two things that save it are the creature, designed by Stan Winston the genius and Henriksen. Apart from that its just an average boogieman thriller.

  • June 16, 2009
    It was a good movie. The idea was good, acting wasn't bad but the creature made me laugh but still seemed to creep me out haha. I liked it, Until the end, not everything has a good ending. Worth a watch(;
  • June 15, 2009
not bad but the more they made the crappier they got
  • June 2, 2009
One of the better horror movies out there. Happy that Sci-Fi tried to reinvigorate the series. Sad that the series has ended up the way it has.

  • November 3, 2008
i cant stand to watch this movie. it's a great movie but very disturbing to me.
  • October 30, 2008
I give it points for being somewhat original in the horror genre, and having good creature effects. And you've got Lance Hendriksen too. But let's not forget, it's still a cheesy 80s low budget horror movie with some goofy writing, editing, and atrocious music.
  • October 29, 2008
One of Nikki and my faves....
  • October 29, 2008
Backwoods vengeance sets up this tale of morality. Lance Henriksen shines as the father who wants revenge for the death of his son but then balks at the cost. Features a great "witch" and superb man in a suit effects. Great, laughable name of the demon only adds to the fun of th...( read more)is overall great B-movie from the 80's.

Before I get this review started, I would like to mention that this film is a perfect example that you can?t judge a book by its cover. The film, in fact, does come with the classic horror tagline. And, on top of that, it has an interesting premise, yet, the movie is still extrem...( read more)ely disappointing. Why? Well, there?s the story?? the monster??? and nearly everything else.
The story happens to start off decent with a flashback. There is nothing special as far as film work and script and story goes during this 5 minute intro. However, what makes this 5 minutes better and more watchable than the other 85 minutes is the lighting. It seems to have borrowed a lot from the cult Italian horror fest, Suspiria. It isolates to constrasting colors, blue and red in this case, and splits them among shots, making for a couple of neat shots, but that?s about it.
After the flashback, the film officially gets started. They drop the lighting and switch to a blander setting. Other than this, nothing else is wrong in the start. The father and the son?s relationship is displayed. It adds a little character value to the film. Once the bikers hit the scene, nothing major happens other than the accidental killing of the son. When I say that nothing major happens minus the death, I only say this because it seems that the film goes nowhere for 30 minutes.
Once the film does go somewhere, it goes incredibly slow for a film of this genre. For example, the father goes to summon the demon and right when you think that something?s going to happen, it is discovered that he has to find the corpse of Pumpkin head in the middle of the swamp. Thus, another 5-10 minutes are wasted.
Finally, 45 minutes into the film, stuff actually happens. The demon finally goes to track down and kill the bikers. Before I go any further, however, I would like to mention how disappointed I was with how the thing looked. Take the Alien from the Alien series and then mix that with the Predator without the mask from the Predator series. Then, add a touch of the Evil gremlins from the Gremlin series and BAM there you have what pumpkin head looks like. During some scenes it looks especially creepy while other scenes make it extremely laughable looking.
Now that that is out of my system, I will commence with the review. As I was saying, the monster is unleashed. Seeing that there are only 30 minutes left of the film by now, they decide to cram all of the killings and finale into this ridiculously short period of time (note that there are 6-8 different teens in all). To make up for this cramming, you would think that they would at least make the killing creative to provide some entertainment value considering that the last hour was wasted?? but they don?t. Pumpkin head simply does the 3 following things: grab his victims by the face and either throw or scratch them up. Now that?s what I call creativity! The whole movie doesn?t go to waste, though. The ending is semi-unpredictable and the last scene is memorable. So the movie is only 90% crap. Sadly, Pumpkin head couldn?t avenge the viewers wasted time with this movie. Watch at your own discretion.

As hoaky monster flicks go from the 80s - this is one of the better ones. Forget the sequels (almost always a good rule of thumb) but this original isn't bad at all. A "Grim Fairy Tale" it is and aside from the pretty durn scary monster, Lance Henrikson in the lead role as the ...( read more)father out to avenge his son's death was actually very good. I hadn't watched this since it was released 20 yrs ago - ohh and the witch in this? One of the best and most believable witches I've seen in any movie (to date).

    Interesting concept, generally mediocre execution.

    I LIKE THE BLOOD
    AND THE DEMON WAS GOOD
  • September 23, 2008
A corny and occasionally creepy late 80's horror film. It stars genre actor Lance Henriksen and is centered around revenge, folklore and a bunch of whiny teenagers running for their lives. The movie showcases a strange monster called Pumkinhead created by late special effects ...( read more)wizard Stan Winston. The movie isn't high art but it's fun brainless escapism.

this was the scariest thing i'd ever seen when i was little, and it turned out to be awesome when i got older.
  • September 9, 2008
Most creature horror films can get pretty campy - but this one was done just right. Plus, if you're going to have a superb creature - always make sure he's designed by the great Stan Winston.

the strobe lights made me feel sick :(... but happy i finally got to see this after waiting for like, a billion years. ... not really a great movie though xD
  • July 22, 2008
A good, solid slasher-style creature feature and a minor classic in its own right, Pumpkinhead is surprisingly well-executed. Not as strong or memorable as Friday the 13th or Halloween, but still certainly worth watching.
  • July 7, 2008
this movie was awesome the best part of it was Lance Henriksen
  • July 6, 2008
