While Sammo's Benny Hill-esque humour is a bit dated, and the change of pacing halfway in the film feels a off, this is pure old school HK magic. Sammo deserves all the credit for directing some of the most kick ass fight sequences in HK history. Couple that with the most rotten ...( read more)villian i have seen in a while and you have yourself a winner.

Sammo is part of a group of rickshaw drivers in 40's Macao. He competes with an over-the-hill baker for the affection of his pretty assistant. This is coupled with another romance between another driver and a girl he accidentally runs over, whose dark secret eventually serves to ...( read more)drive forward the narrative. Always the consummate cinephile, Sammo stages the opening fight scene between two rival rickshaw companies with several ingenious references to Star Wars and the Three Stooges. In addition Sammo displays some incredible moves for someone of his size. Along with Eastern Condors, this film has many impressive action scenes such as beautifully choreographed fight between Sammo and the master Lau Kar Leung, who makes a memorable cameo appearance. Another incredible scene has Sammo running away from the bad guys with his girlfriend in the rickshaw, which makes a highly unusual car chase scene, a staple of Sammo Hung film (an HK action films in general). Later the film changes sharply in tone from a romantic comedy into a brutal tragedy, and it's a credit to Sammo's directorial skills that he pulls it off with aplomb. Worthy of mentioning is the performance of Sammo regular John Sham, who plays argubly the most absurdly evil and slimy villain ever.

As much as I love Jackie Chan's films, and as much as I realize that Bruce Lee is probably the greatest martial arts star ever, my heart pretty much belongs to everybody's favorite portly kicker Sammo. And Pedicab Driver is his finest work, my favorite martial arts film ever, and...( read more) one of my favorite movies ever.

It starts off as a light-hearted comedy, becomes a romantic drama, and ends in almost heroic bloodshed territory. And for the whole film Sammo is putting all that he loves about movies in between and it shows on the screen. And did I mention the fights? From an early barroom brawl between the pedicab and taxi workers, to a dizzying pole fight with Lau Kar-Leung(Maybe the best fight ever filmed) to a final knockdown drag out beatdown inside a gangster's mansion, Pedicab Driver delievers on that front in spades.

It's a classic of the genre, a hidden gem in Hong Kong films, and the best movie from one of the best dudes to ever emerge from Hong Kong films.

    Just wonderful.

Sammo Hung's crowning achievement- he directs and stars in one of the most violent, brutal movies ever. Like all of Sammo's directorial efforts, it plays out like an episode from the first season of Night Court- very bi-polar. The tone can shift from absolutely dumb slapstick com...( read more)edy to serious drama, back again, and then goes to unnerving violence and bloodshed. That being said, this is what Sammo Hung is all about. Compare this to Jackie Chan's 'Miracle', which came out the same year, and it's easy to tell who comes out on top.A must for fans of 80s HK action.

One of Sammo's best. A must see for the fight between Sammo and Lau Kar-Leung. This movie seems more bipolar than even most other HK films with its constant switching between action, comedy, and melodrama.
