Race With The Devil is the perfect drive-in movie. It's got action, car chases, scares, romance...just everything! It was much better than I expected, and actually kind of scary. Overall a good horror movie.
Holy crap this movie was slow, but holy crap the ending totally made up for it! It spent way too much time trying to create a supposed "atmosphere" when really it was just padding out a concept that you can't do at 90 minutes for a low budget. Definitely one of Starret's better films, too. It feels, however, very flat and dull until the two final chases. Moreso than Jack's other films, really. As if there's just a plodding pace until finally the snake attack occurs and the film kicks into speedy gear. But, it's worth seeing for grindhouse/exploitation completists! !
Creepy 70s horror flick involving two couples that witness a ritual sacrifice and end up being chased by what appears to be a vast Satanic cult. There are some genuinely unsettling moments and some kick-ass 70s car chases. A drive-in classic!
This movie just feels inconsequential. It is mentally tiring to try and come up with anything to say about this movie other than there's a few cool shots, it's a very standard 'went down the wrong road story', and I think it has got some tense moments, but overall it's nothing impressive. Some dirtbikes, devil-worshippers, dog-killers, and dirty cops collide in a big "car fight" at the conclusion, and several other times during the movie. So there's cool stuff, but it just doesn't come together to make a significant piece.
Another 70's flick with a unique and totally whacked concept which leaves you highly entertained. This is a great thriller with a psychotic ending which you would never guess!
The two icons, Fonda and Oates and their wives witness a Satanic ritual when on holiday driving through a small county, and pretty soon the Cultists are violently pursuing them until they are focred to fight back just as viciously.
A great road movie, and can be a bit chilling at times! Some great scenes.
Can you imagine going RVing with Peter Fonda and Warren Oates? Good lord. This is a goddamned creepy movie. It's also kind of silly, but so tense that I never worried about it until the next day when I was describing it to someone. It develops such a fine atmosphere of paranoia that you're zeroing in to the smallest behavioral quirk of every single extra.
Warren Oats, Peter Fonda, the chick from MASH, satanists, A motorhome and a shotgun. If you need convincing beyond that you've got some catching up to do. Kind of a white trash Mad Max with a satanic twist and awesomer sunglasses.
Amusingly ridiculous horror that sees an RV full of middle class yuppies terrorized by a satanic cult in Texas. Kind of a cross between Duel, The Wicker Man and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, it's very dated and silly, which is the main reason why it entertains!
How could a movie about satanic cults, motorbikes, and Warren Oates be this disappointing? While I enjoyed (and concurred with) the thesis that everyone living in the rural area between San Antonio and Amarillo Texas is a bloodthirsty satan worshipper, I really needed more action. After all, one should never have time to stop and ponder the motives of the guy in the death mask or the strategic reasoning of the long suffering band of protagonists. Not in a movie like this. While Warren Oates is usually able to elevate any material into the realm of the awesome, he seems to just begrudgingly walk through this one. Maybe it's because his buddy, writer/director Lee Frost, was yanked from the picture a week into production and Oates' loyalty kept him from really performing. I'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt, and give the movie 2 stars in his memory. You're a good friend, Warren Oates.
Better than expected. This had some surprises and some laughs (just because it was old). But it did have some unrealistic moments.
I had my dad buy this DVD for me on a whim when I saw it for $9.99 at Circuit City. I actually really like it so I'm glad.
3 and a half. A decent action film from Starrett and a good performance from the ever-dependable Oates
