Raymond: Of course I don't have my underwear. I'm definitely not wearing my underwear.
Charlie: I gave you a fresh pair of mine to wear. Where are they?
Raymond: They're in the pocket of my jacket. Here.
Charlie: I don't want them back.
Raymond: These are not boxer shorts. Mi...( read more)ne are boxer shorts. These are Hanes 32.
    Charlie: Underwear is underwear, Ray.
Raymond: My boxer shorts have my name and it says Raymond.
Charlie: All right, when we pass the store, we'll pick you up a pair of boxer shorts.
Raymond: I get my boxer shorts at K-Mart in Cincinnati.
Charlie: We're not going back to Cincinnati, Ray, so don't even start with that.

Its a road trip/buddy movie that features long lost brothers traveling together for sketchy reasons. That's simply put, but this film works due to its lead performances and Barry Levinson's direction, especially for the way the film doesn't feel like we have to like it just because its about a handicapped person.

Tom Cruise stars as asshole, fast talking, car salesman Charlie Babbitt. This is a cold, unhappy man, with his own business that he keeps afloat barely by using his yuppie skills on the phone. On the way to Palm Springs with his girlfriend Susanna, played by Valeria Golino, Charlie receives a call that his father has died. There's gonna be a delay in the fun weekend.

Upon arriving back home for the funeral, Charlie reveals that he hasn't spoken to his father for twenty years, after they had a falling out. Upon having the will read to him, Charlie learns that someone else receives the family fortune. With a little more work, Charlie learns that the money is going to an older brother he didn't even knew he had.

This brother is Raymond, played by Dustin Hoffman, who is a high function autistic savant. Charlie soon decides that he will take his brother out of the institution he has been living in, in an effort to claim half the inheritance for himself. What follows is a cross country journey (since Raymond wont fly) that leads to the toleration and eventual growth of love that Charlie will develop for Raymond.

Charlie: What you have to understand is, four days ago he was only my brother in name. And this morning we had pancakes.

I can't say I like Cruise's character (although he grew on me as the film went on), but I did like the performance. its a very "Tom Cruise" performance, but it works well here. Hoffman is just wonderful and I once again try to stress that its not just a "here's an actor playing a mentally challenged person," I generally liked everything about how Hoffman approached playing this character and how the story treats him.

As a whole, the movie follows a formula of sorts, but it does it very well. I enjoyed how everything played out and how Cruise's character develops. Raymond does too, but in much subtler ways. Levinson also makes sure to deliver a well made feature in terms of its technical aspects. The shots of the two traveling together in the convertible are good looking and a number of long takes, usually involving Raymond reacting to something add as well. The score by Hans Zimmer definitely grew on me as the film went on.

    A very good film overall.

Dr. Bruner: Raymond, wouldn't you feel more relaxed in your favorite K-Mart clothes?
    Charlie: Tell him, Ray.
    Raymond: K-Mart sucks.
    Dr. Bruner: Oh, I see.

The only good Tom Cruise movie and a fantastic performance by Dustin Hoffman.

Hoffman's performance remains strong 21 years later, while Tom Cruise looks so young it is hard to take him very seriously. The writers explain that the original idea was for Charlie to be about the same age as his brother, and to be even more bitter than Charlie was portrayed. ...( read more) There was some discussion whether he could be played by Jack Nicholson or Bill Murray. It is tempting to think that it would have been a much better movie if they had stayed true to the original idea, since Cruise's performance is rather wooden. Nevertheless, Rain Man remains an important film for the portrayal of people with autism and our attitudes towards them. As all three commentators point out, the real point of the film is how Charlie becomes a better person through his meeting his brother. It is a strong work and bears repeated viewing.

Much like a couple recent movies about Africa, the performance is stronger than the film.

Tom Cruise as Charlie Babbitt is a portrait of Selfish product of the Regan era, Selfish, Rich, and with little patience for his brother Raymond. Even as gains respect for his brother Raymond, he still remains having a hard time really grasping that he is really related to him.
  • July 17, 2009
Tom Cruise is still channeling his Joel Goodsen role at this point, but Dustin Hoffman's superstar role as the autistic Raymond pushes this film over the top and into iconic film status. A heartfelt story, admittedly, but the film is truly all about Hoffman's performance, as he ...( read more)unsurprisingly took home Best Actor.

The acting from both Hoffman and Cruise are superb, though Hoffman had a more difficult role so he should get more credit. It has a great story, filled with comic moments. The more serious scenes work equally well. There are occasional moments which feel overdramatised, but apart...( read more) from that this is a classic.

Great movie. Dustin Hoffman was excellent. Tom Cruise was a little pushy but that was his role. I really liked the story and how it ends. I found that Hoffman looked so innocent wich made him able to get the hot ladies attention. Good movie, great job Hoffman.

Absolutely touching story both of relationships between brothers, but also relationships between the vulnerable and their guardians. Cruise and Hoffman, two phenomenal actors, deliver completely believable performances, Hoffman particularly in what had to be an intensely difficul...( read more)t role. Raymond's genius, simplicity, and vulnerability are all presented perfectly. Minus a terrible 80's soundtrack, an absolutely wonderful film.
