McGowan was… More Universal cowboy Jack Hoxie's lesser known brother, Al, starred in a series of extremely low-budget westerns produced by Morris R. Schlank. Schlank had proudly announced the hiring of Francis Ford, brother of John Ford, to direct the films but for some reason the careless J.P. McGowan was substituted -- to the decided detriment of the series. Red Blood is one of the few surviving Al Hoxie oaters, and its story of a family saved from a crooked gambler is nothing to write home about. Neither is Schlank's penny-pinching production methods that somehow got in the way of the action. Hoxie was good-looking and a better actor than his more famous brother but his starring career was derailed by cheapskate producers such as Morris R. Schlank and the even more economical William Pizor. Red Blood, however, is almost saved by the villain, Lew Meehan, whose florid acting style is something of a hoot to modern audiences. ~ Hans J.
