Delivering an astonishingly accomplished first feature, Cuban-born multi-talented director Miguel Coyula also serves as producer, editor, and writer of this apocalyptic low-budget extravaganza. Expres...( read more  read more... )sionistic lighting, inventive camera angles, and a minimal Casiotone score composed, again, by Coyula, all conspire to create an atmosphere of doom in a dystopic New York of the near future. The fact that all this is evoked on a nonexistent budget makes it seem even more adept. This New York of looming sky-high buildings is traversed by flying cars and genetically mutated red cockroaches, and is pelted by acid rain. Adam (Adam Plotch) is a youngish man downtrodden by the daily grind. One day he encounters a beautiful, mysterious young woman on the subway platform, whose sad smile beguiles him but who disappears before he can approach her. All he finds in her place is a tooth that is too hot to pick up. But the two will meet again, and their destructive, passionate relationship will uncover dark secret desires that Adam could never have imagined previously. A surreal and disturbing tale, RED COCKROACHES takes a number of risks in its ambitious scope, controversial subject matter, and complex--at times rather obscure--plot, but these elements conspire to form a challenging, rewarding, and innovative debut.

Very good. Surreal NYC & a mystery. BLUEVELVET-esque.

This is one of the best indie films I've seen. The entire movie was done on virtually no budget! Amazing! I can't wait for the sequels!
