Plot: Using a faulty thriller for his soapbox as an outspoken critic of China, a devout follower of the Dalai Lama, and an influential supporter of Tibetan freedom, Richard Gere resorts to the equivalent of...( read more read more... ) propagandistic drama to deliver a heavy-handed message. In other words, Red Corner relies on a dubious strategy to promote political awareness, but director Jon Avnet appeals to the viewer's outrage with such effective urgency that you're likely to forget you're being shamelessly manipulated. Gere plays a downtrodden TV executive who sells syndicated shows on the global market, and during a business trip to China he finds himself framed for the murder of the sexy daughter of a high Chinese official. Once trapped in a legal system in which his innocence will be all but impossible to prove, Gere must rely on a Chinese-appointed lawyer (played by Bai Ling) who first advises him to plead guilty but gradually grows convinced of foul play. Barely attempting to hide its agenda, Red Corner effectively sets the stage for abundant anti-Chinese sentiment, and to be sure, the movie gains powerful momentum with its tale of justice gone awry. It's a serious-minded, high-intensity courtroom drama with noble intentions ... but did it have to be so conspicuously lacking in subtlety? --Jeff Shannon

Let's put aside all ideas of political manipulation and the possible reasons of choosing Richard Gere with his personal religious beliefs as the lead for this film and review it as the film itself.

Although played in China the idea of being guilty until proved innocent or even the brutal conditions in prison is not foreign to many countries in this world.

Fantastic acting and a moving story. A story we should all take to heart when we visit strange (for us) cultures.

Regardless of what the Flixster reviewer says in their plot description, I don't consider the telling of an unpleasant truth, to be a soapbox. Its easy for people who live with freedom to wax about subltety. The reality of life in these countries is anything but subtle. The reality is harsh and gritty, and whacks you in the face every moment of your life, just like this film does. I've not always had the luxury of living in a part of the world that has the advantages North Americans and most Europeans have, so I found this drama quite realistically done, from the perspective of how someone used to the freedom of North American life and how they would react to such a corrupt regime. I think that having to face the unpleasantness of life in a country like that, makes some people so uncomfortable or is so far from their reality, that they'd rather rip the film apart, than pay attention to its unpleasant message. I'm not one of them, I got the message, and it made me think and feel and sympathize. To me, any film that can make you ponder the subject matter long, long after you're done watching it, has done a fantastic job, and is therefore a good film.

I hate richard Gere, Dave Letterman had him on and he could not take a joke and he acted like a little bitch. This guy in real live is a asshole. I would sock him in the face if i seen him.

One of my favourite Richard Gere's movies. This is brilliant suspense thriller with shocking and compelling mystery where danger never lets up.

I have seen this film quite along time ago and thought it was quite good. Another good actor who I enjoy watching films with him in them is Richard Gere.

This is a well-done movie, but im not sure about how accurate the facts are regarding the Chinese legal system. Whether its true or not doesnt matter cause Richard Gere does an above average job here, with Ling Bai in a great supporting role. Overall, its worth watching, but only on TV(which i did)

This was high drama and I thought it was well made, I'm not looking at it for a judgement type movie which seemed to have gotten him in trouble with China, but I thought is was very good. I loved his lawyer in the movie and thought she was excellent in her part. I think it his best drama.

I like this movie very much. It show me how to be patient to fight the unfair of power arogancy.
It also shows how to keep the honesty.
