Amazing book. The script follows the book and I was happy about that. Another great Hopkins performance as Hannibal Lecter.

This prequel to the Silence of the Lambs is I think better than Silence of the Lambs. This film could be considered a remake and I have to say it is far better than the first version. For those of you who don't know this MANHUNTER, a film by Michael Mann, was the first Hannibal Lecktor film. It came out before Silence of the Lambs.

Very Good Film!! Anthony Hopkins Is Brilliant As Hannibal Lecter As Usual!! Edward Norton And Ralph Fiennes Were Brilliant Also!! This Story Is Very Similar To Silence Of The Lambs Because An FBI Agent Is Questioning And Talking To Hannibal Lecter For Information About A Serial Killer!! Buffalo Bill In Silence Of The Lambs And Tooth Fairy In This Film!! Also It Is A Male FBI Agent Instead Of A Female FBI Agent!! Weird That Silence Of The Lambs Is The Only Hannibal Lecter Film That Have Won Lots Of Oscars But Manhunter, Hannibal, Red Dragon And Hannibal Rising Haven't!!

If Silence of the Lambs is one of the best book-to-film adaptions ever, then this film is one of the finest remakes made. After a poor time with Mann's first one, Brett Ratner gets it right the second go-round with Norton portraying a tired Will Graham as opposed to Petersen's tortured Graham. Hopkins is, of course, magnificent in his third spell as Lechter and Keitel, Watson, Hoffman and Ralph Fiennes give this film just what it needed to not be considered simply food for the Lechter gravy train. Better than Hannibal, for sure.

Even though I dislike Edward Norton, I found that he does well in this film. It was a good story and it's one of those films where you actually feel sorry for the killer. Tut tut. I really love the search and the ideas/meanings that are throw around. Anthony Hopkins is great as Hannibal Lectur- I want to see the previous and next one too now.

    RED DRAGON (2002)
    directed by Brett Ratner
starring Edward Norton, Anthony Hopkins, Ralph Fiennes

«I am the Dragon. And you call me insane. You are privy to a great becoming, but you recognize nothing. To me, you are a slug in the sun. You are an ant in the afterbirth. It is your nature to do one thing correctly. Before me, you rightly tremble. But, fear is not what you owe me. You owe me awe.»

After the surprisingly huge success of Hannibal, third biggest opening week-end at the box-office at the time, Red Dragon was quickly greenlit to milk the cow some more, even though it had already been adaptated in the 80's, as Manhunter. With the flashy colors and the painful soundtrack gone, Red Dragon is more effective, and it completes the Lecter Trilogy pretty well, even though its supposed to be the first episode in the saga. The other difference with Michael Mann's film is that Anthony Hopkins portrayed Hannibal Lecter in Brett Ratner's version.

While Hannibal was a mess and a bit too cartoonish and over-the-top, Brett Ratner, surprisingly, managed to bring the franchise back to the first film, The Silence of the Lambs. Its atmospherical, chilling and clever again, but still, Ratner is no Jonathan Demme, and doesnt really have a style of his own, but he sure is a great copycat.

Red Dragon begins with FBI profiler Will Graham, accidentally catching Hannibal Lecter, he got lucky, but he also got hurt and then after Lecter is sent to prison, Graham retires. Many years later he is called back in action, only to help from a distance on a case about another psychotic serial killer who calls himself the «dragon». Just like in Silence, we also follow the killer's life, to understand him and see him in his actions. He is obessed with one of William Blake's painting, which he actually have tattooed on his entire body. There is a blind girl at his work showing interest in him and that will complicate his plans, or simply ease him down.

Appart from being surprisingly effective, Red Dragon also have one of the most talented cast to be displayed in one film, probably one of the coolest cast of that year, and they all give stellar performances. Anthony Hopkins is back as Lecter, of course, but I mean in terms of acting, in Hannibal and overdid it a bit and it became laughable but here, he is just one notch under the performance that made him famous in The Silence of the Lambs. Edward Norton is the lead, Will Graham, giving a surprisingly commited performance even if he mostly took the part to finance 25th Hour, he could have sleepact through the film but decided to give the best of him. Ralph Fiennes almost steals the show as The Tooth Fairy or the «dragon», the psychotic killer and Emily Watson is amazing as his blind coworker. Harvey Keitel replaces Scott Glenn from the first film and he does it very convincingly. Mary-Louise Parker and Philip Seymour Hoffman round up the cast in smaller roles but with strong performances as well.

Red Dragon and a very fine psychological thriller with layered characters, but it would probably be better if it was a squel - prequel actually - to The Silence of the Lambs, it unfortunately has to live in its shadow. Its very effective nonetheless with a lot of the qualities that made Jonathan Demme's film so successful.

«Remarkable boy. I do admire your courage. I think I'll eat your heart.»

,,francis dolarhyde: i am not a man. i began as one, but now i am becoming more than a man, as you will witness."
red dragon is a 2002 thriller featuring the brilliant psychiatrist and also brutal serial killer dr. hannibal lecter (anthony hopkins). red dragon' s story takes place before the events in the silence of the lambs. the silence of the lambs is the first (1991), the second is hannibal (2001) and the third is red dragon (2002). other hannibal movies are manhunter (1986) and hannibal rising (2007). but anthony hopkins appears just in the silence of the lambs, hannibal and red dragon. if i compare red dragon to the silence of the lambs, i will find out that the silence of the lambs is better in any way. so, if you want to understand the story easier, watch them in this order: red dragon, the silence of the lambs, hannibal. in his baltimore house, famous local psychiatrist dr. hannibal lecter is approached by will graham (edward norton), a young gifted FBI agent, tracking a local serial killer whose victims have all been cannibalized. during the consultation and brainstorming session, graham discovers evidence implicating dr. lecter in the murders, shortly before lecter returns and attacks graham, nearly killing him. graham resists and hurts him. lecter is sentenced to life imprisonment, while graham, traumatized by the experience, retires from the FBI. years later, another serial killer, francis dolarhyde, nicknamed the tooth fairy (ralph fiennes), begins to stalk and murder random families. special agent jack crawford (harvey keitel) seeks out graham for his assistance; graham agrees! graham, coming to the realization that most of his previous success was achieved due to the collaborations with dr. lecter, concludes that he must once again visit lecter and seek his help in capturing the tooth fairy, who also worships lecter. the investigation gets complicated when lecter provides dolarhyde with graham' s home address. graham manages to evacuate his family from their house. in the meantime, dolarhyde falls in love with a blind co-worker. after many events, dolarhyde pursues graham to his home and attacks him. graham' s wife shoots and kills dolarhyde. after recovering, graham receives a letter from lecter. the killer hopes that he isn' t too disfigured. the film ends with dr. frederick chilton informing lecter that there is a young woman from the FBI waiting to speak with him. this scene is the beginning of the silence of the lambs. red dragon has a great cast (edward norton, anthony hopkins, ralph fiennes, emily watson, harvey keitel, philip seymour hoffman and other good actors). all the actors delivered good performances, but edward norton was, again, simply amazing. red dragon remains a must - see for hannibal' s fans, but don' t expect to see a great movie!

Pretty unnecessary flick, considering 'Manhunter' is already a very good film. Still it was nice to see Hopkins play Lecter once again.

Anthony Hopkins + Edward Norton = Pure-uncut-extreme-awesomeness. Totally worth it unless you don't like the genre. By far the most interesting movie in the quadrilogy.

    Anthony Hopkins: Dr. Hannibal Lecter

    Edward Norton: Will Graham

    Ralph Fiennes: Francis Dolarhyde

Excellent installment to the Hannibal series. Red Dragon A very clever prequel.

Ralph Fiennes, Edward Norton, Anthony Hopkins and some of the best and loved Actors of mine in this to make this Masterful Prequel. Beautiful performances especially from Ralph & Anthony. Two players who know how to dance with villainy.

The start of the movie had me glued to the start and I watched this after a very difficult time in my life, the day my heart got broken. Thankfully Red Dragon succeeded in taking my mind of things, and I find that it deserves a decent Review and to go in my Favourites considering my fondness for the film.

My only thing that annoyed me about Red Dragon is that Anthony Hopkins looks alot Older and Lambs, it was hard not to compare and think of how young he looked in that. Considering Dragon is a prequel to make Hopkins look younger somehow is now possible even the mediocre X-men 3 has made use of CG smoothing for actors faces/facials.

It's got some nice twists, music, pace and alot of charm. Darkly immersed and satisfying Brett Ratner shows he can do the Dark Side, not just comedy or Action Set Piece movies.

Wonderfully acted (Hopkins, Norton) and beautifully portrayed (with the help of Danny Elfman's genius) this movie is great. I really liked it even though it did feel very much like Silence Of The Lambs.

Love Edward Norton and Anthony Hopkins. The little known movie that was made a while back called "Manhunter" was better - it is also from the Thomas Harris book Red Dragon and stars the guy who plays Grissom on CSI. But this one was ok.
