Very thought-provoking. Maher's a jerk and sometimes obscene, but that's the whole point.

Dawkins-lite polemic against organised religions which points up the illogical irrationality of religion well enough. It has amusing moments and a barnstorming plea at the end but seemed more like a TV documentary production.

As I watch this I'm glad I'm not some insane zombie that draws inspiration from snuff films starring their "lord" made by anti semetic action stars of the 80's.

I liked it but I am one of the choir here. And that is this movie's biggest problem - I don't think this is movie for those other than the already converted. The "devout" will react as many of the interviewed subjects do - by getting angry and storming out or clamming up or simpl...( read more)

Genius! At last a film about religion, for the thinking person. This film does a fine job of shining the light on all of the ridiculousness and often horrifying truths about organized religions and the different people that follow them.
Although I've always been completly fa...( read more) -

Religulous is funny and offensive in equal measure, and aims less to change hearts and minds than to inspire conversation.

I really feel like this movie is way to bias to be called a documentary. I don't know. I didn't learn a lot from it, and it felt like Maher just wanted to tell jokes and make fun of things, rather then compare. Not what I was hoping for on such a touchy subject.

Critic Reviews
Much of what they've gotten on film is so entertaining, you almost want to pray for a sequel. full review
Religulous has an unholy fervor that should start many bonfires. full review
Religulous is not for the devout. But those with a taste for irreverent humor and clear-eyed analysis will find it funny, enlightening and disturbing. full review
Bill Maher does something amazing in Religulous. He makes Michael Moore look incredibly likable in comparison. full review
A provocation, thinly disguised as a documentary, that succeeds in being almost as funny as it is offensive. full review
Maher's antireligion documentary, Religulous, has numerous blasts of raucous humor amid passages that feel like a screed. full review
Bill Maher would have been burned at the stake if his hellishly hilarious and surprisingly thoughtful satire on organized religion had played the Inquisition. full review
This movie is about Bill Maher's opinion of religion. He's very smart, quick and funny, and I found the movie entertaining, although sometimes he's a little mean to his targets. full review
This movie doesn't seriously explore how religion affects politics; it's just a snide attack on religious belief. full review

November 19, 2008One of the best parts was when Bill Maher spoke to a guy who plays Jesus in dramatizations of Bible stories at a Christian theme park. The guy asked Bill Maher, very genuinely "What if you're wrong?" He wasn't the first person in the film to ask Bill Maher this question, implying that Bill could be ignoring the afterlife, possibly at his own peril.
If Bill Maher is wrong, he'll be pleasantly surprised that there is an afterlife, and the loving god Christians believe in will have lots of time to straighten him out.
Then Bill, with a smile, asks the same question back. And it becomes clear that this guy, who plays Jesus on stage for a living, may have more to lose. If he's wrong, then everything he has done with his entire life has been for a make-believe story. He has based his life on apocryphal tales, lied to others for a living, and there is no afterlife to make up for it. Bang. Ouch. -
