This is a pretty good film, not the usual chick flick I was expecting. It?s one of Drew Barrymore?s best performances!

One of my proverbs is that life is a long process of getting side-tracked (though I do recognise the existence of "strange attractors" in my own life.) "Driving in Cars with Boys" is about that. It's about a girl who gets pregnant by Mr Wrong, and whose dreams of college fade awa...( read more)y as she has to face the harsh reality of raising a kid while daddy is up to no good.

The film is not about riding in cars with boys, but about "Riding in Cars with Boys", an autobiographical novel within the film, which itself does not seem to be about riding in cars with boys, unless you count the heroine's son and dad as boys, since most of the riding is done with them. It's a kind of cautionary tale, a less optimistic but still comedic version of "Peggy Sue Got Married", with flashbacks replacing the time travel.

I didn't find Drew Barrymore such a good actress. She seems always to be laughing, as if she finds her job funny, so that underneath the angry outbursts and the tears, there's always a smile that makes it all unreal. Steve Zahn was excellent though, in a very pathetic role, as was the first little boy who played Barrymore's son. I also found Brittany Murphy funnier than Barrymore herself.

I must add that this is not a priori my kind of film, and I only watched it because a Flixster friend rated it 4.5 stars and I was stuck in bed with constant, excruciating pain in my right leg for several days. I had already seen two of Penny Marshall's movies ("Big" and "A League of Their Own"), both of which I had found watchable, but neither of which had particularly made me want to follow her, and most of the cast (apart from Woods and Barrymore) were new to me. I don't regret watching it, though. I've seen much worse recently.

Drew Barrymore is maybe a little too dark of a mom in this movie based on a memoir but I very much enjoy everyone in this movie.

Yes this film is sad, but at points it does tend to stray from the point. However it does remain fairly consistent throughout and I would recommend it for someone who would like to feel a variety of emotions while viewing.

She did everything wrong but got everything right, I have been thinking what that actually means and if you watch this movie you might understand what the quote says.
This is the true story about Beverly Donofrio and Drew Barrymore plays wonderfully as Beverly where she gets to...( read more) play a 15-year-old up to a 35-year-old. 10 years older and 10 years younger than what her real age was, that shows her real talent.
Watch this movie and discover Drew's real talent and how a girl can do everything wrong but get everything right, isn't that impossible?
  • March 6, 2009
    Not my sort of movie.

Seriocomic story based on the memoir by Beverly Donofrio, the movie follows a young woman who finds her life radically altered by an event from her teen years. Born in 1950, Beverly grew up bright and...( read more ) ambitious in a working-class neighborhood in Connecticut; her...( read more) father was a tough but good-hearted cop who listened to his daughter's problems, and her mother was a nervous woman eager to imagine the worst. From an early age, Beverly displays a keen intelligence and an interest in literature, and dreams of going to college in New York and becoming a writer. However, she also develops an early interest in boys, and at 15 finds herself madly in love with a boy from her high school. However, an attempt to get his attention leads to an embarassing incident at a party, and Ray, a sweet but thick-headed 18-year-old, steps forward to defend her. Beverly and Ray end up making out, and after one thing leads to another, Beverly discovers she's pregnant. Telling Ray is only marginally less difficult than informing her parents, and at 16, Beverly is a wife and mother. Against the odds, Beverly is determined to still finish high school and go on to college, but that goal becomes more difficult with time, especially after Beverly's marriage begins to fall apart. Ray tries to do the right thing but has trouble holding a job, and becomes addicted to heroin
