Good Cast...Great Locations...A Surprisingly Mediocre Film.
I think if you go into this with no knowledge of any of the other "Ripley" films, you will probably enjoy this a lot more then I did.
Having greatly enjoyed "The Talented Mister Ripley", this was a little disapointing. To spite it's notable cast it seemed a little low budget and slightly dated, even though it is only a few years old.
Not entirely without merit, just forget everything you you THINK you know about "Mr. Ripley" and enjoy the ride.
Did make me more interested in reading some of Patricia Highsmiths other "Tom Ripley" books.
Honestly, not as good as Matt Damon's version, but still a very good adaptation of Liliana Cavani about Patricia Highsmith's novel. The definitive highlight of this well-structured film is John Malkovich: he's outstanding. A satisfying version of the elegant character we all know.
Follows Wim Wenders film The Fellow American, with great Dennis Hopper.
Tom Ripley, formerly played by Matt Damon returns for another thriller, in this in the shape of John Malkovich. The look, feel and direction of the movie sometimes feels really old-fashioned, almost like a French film noir from the 70s. Accordingly the pace is rather slow, but the violence well timed and realistic. That's not awfully exciting but pretty entertaining and carried by an excellent Malkovich, giving cold-hearted, witty and arrogant comments in the cruelest situations, making the character his own. It is him who moves this film above average, but the rest of the cast is just as convincing. Not bad at all.
Where's Sigourney weaver? It doesn't really matter. This is a solid thriller that flew under the radar. Great performance, as always, by John Malkovich.
matt damon did his ripley in talented mr ripley, malkovich does his take here, whos better,, i dont know, i havent read ripley books, but here msalkovich does act great, oviously hes older than damon, so a interestin take on charactor
the story is known . but this time we have excellent images and nice photography as the movie is filmed in Italy , near Florence ... Malkovich in very good form is a real star
First of all to all those silly monkeys out there, this is not a sequel to The Talented Mr Ripley. It's just a different version from another book so it has no connection with that film.
When i heard about this, it had high standards to beat and i'm just going to say it straight away that it is not better.
As it's own film and a different version of Ripley this time played by the much older Malkovich, which was different and in his own way very menacing. It's hard to compare cause Matt Damon did quite a menacing job as well but Malkovich has this thing about him, it's natural I'd say.
All in all this is worth watching but don't expect it to be the same or even near, just watch it for what it is and it's a really good movie.
Malkovitch was pretty cool, playing the all knowing tough guy. But the film was a bit lacking. Nothing fantastic really happened. Nothing different. I wouldn't expect anyone to watch it twice.
John Malkovich being ever a joy to watch made this movie a higher quality film then the writing and production deserves. The story began with interest but feel short in delivery. It would make a good made for t.v. movie but nothing more impressive. Don't look for a sequal.
I caught this on T.V. the other night and after a few minutes I was completely sucked into the story. Malkovich was the stand out for me of course but I wasn't too thrilled with some of the other actors in their smaller roles.
Loved this movie the first time I saw it...and I had the opportunity to see it again yesterday. I still love it! John Malkovich is a great actor and Cavani does a supurb job directing.
6.4.07.dvd. An inneresting film to see following Mr. Brooks. Definitely an anti-hero sorta flick. I saw it with Sam who now wants to see The Talented Mr. Ripley.
The next Ripley film falls flat due mainly to the convuluted plot and a lack of decent support acting. Malkovich tends to pick some pretty standard roles.
This sequel takes a different approach to "The Talented Mr. Ripley" which may annoy some people, but did not annoy me. Malkovich does a great job of Ripley. It lacked the tension of the first film, but I don't think it matters.
Not a bad film by any account. Not quite in the same league as The Talented Mr. Ripley but John Malkovich's acting and presence in the film make it go further than it would otherwise.
Good locations, good Highsmith characterisation and Malko get this one a pass mark. But some awful directing made Dougray Scott look like a wanker in this.
