Rising Sun

Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Harvey Keitel, Kevin Anderson, Mako, Ray Wise, Sean Connery, Steve Buscemi, Tia Carrere, Wesley Snipes

Author Michael Crichton and director Philip Kaufman had a falling-out over the script for this film, based on Crichton's best-selling novel (which was controversial for its take on the Japanese invasi...( read more  read more... )on of American business in the early '90s). Kaufman ultimately won, doing an above-average job creating a murder mystery based on the culture clash between Los Angeles cops and Japanese multinational business interests. When a prostitute is murdered at the opening of a new L.A. headquarters for a Japanese company, detective Wesley Snipes is forced to call upon retired cop (and Japanophile) Sean Connery to help solve the murder. But he runs into obstruction from the Japanese, as well as a high-tech cover-up, while having to deal with anti-Japanese sentiments from people on his own team. Intriguing if overlong. --Marshall Fine

A pretty good thriller that?s satisfyingly unpredictable. One of the better, East meets West dramas of the time.

The usual mix of culture clash/buddy movie/cheesy cop thriller based around Japanese businessmen operating in america. Simplistic and casually racist.

A surprisingly good action movie. Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes are mis-matched here but work oddly well. Connery again plays a fatherly/mentor style character which he is great at but it's getting a little old. Wesley Snipes shows in the one fight scene that he is in, the early...( read more) signs of the way he was in Blade. The storyline is suprisingly complex in the way that Enemy of the State or The Recruit was. The mixed setting of America and Japan works well creating a clash of cultures. Overall a great action movie that surprised me with how good it was.

Rising Sun is dominating if not excruciatingly annoying. How does mister Crichton manage to solve the whole diplomatic propaganda,is beyond my eyes and ears, detective mystery shrouding the profane racism in the thin air.Connery's character (Sean is brilliant in one of his last gre...( read more)at performances) begrudges every scene and the night is sinister as the film progresses.Kaufman misses a lot of points yet it's a charming police story with the...appropriate Japanese tackiness,we're in Hollywood now.
