Such an amazing movie and great adaption. The acting was perfect and the directing was precise and looked extremely polished. The visual style was beautiful, especially with no cgi aids. It is a classically told story about morality and revenge.

One of Tom Hanks' best performances. The film is stylish, brutal, and incredibly moving. One can't help but appreciate the themes that this film at least takes the time to explore.

I liked this film a lot. It was very dark and brutal but the actors made it work. Tom Hanks was excellent, as he usually is, and really draws you into the story. Everything about this film worked.

Sam Mendes strikes again after his 1999 success "American Beauty" and creates much more than another simple crime movie. He decides to center his caracters and story on the Irish mafia, and its hitman Michael Sullivan who was betrayed by his closest friends. We follow michael, p...( read more)layed by Tom Hanks, fleeing over the country seeking revenge. The mastering of the movie is the filmmaking, noting the spellbinding violent scenes, powerfully achieved by Mendes. Hanks did his job pretty well, but it definitely were Jude Law and Paul Newman who stole the picture with outstanding supporting performances. In the end, we knew for sure that american beauty wasn't a lucky coincidence and that we gained a very powerful director and filmmaker.

Sam Mendes strikes again with a cute, but strong gangster film. Two thumbs up.

Overall I was quite disappointed with this film, mainly due to being a big fan of the comic and the fact it was hyped up to be the best thing since sliced bread by most film review magazines.

Many have either hated, loved, or been let down by this film. Let me just tell you, if you have not seen it yet, go see it. Even if for some reason you don't think its amazing, it will be among the best films you have seen of the year anyways. Road to Perdition is a beautiful movie.

" is that ur profession or ur pleasure? both i guess
to be paid to do wt u love..ain't that the dream ? "
it's a new charcter for Tom Hanks,it's something different than all of his roles as a gangster...and for sure it's one of his best movies.

  • August 14, 2009
I think this was Hanks wanting to be in something like Goodfellas or the Godfather, but he missed. Nothing great, but it was decent.

It was so interesting yet so sad. I pretty much guessed everything that was going to happen right when they stayed at that farm, but I did like the storyline even if it was less than secretive. Seeing Paul Newman as an old crime boss like that was something else too.

Set in 1930's about a mafia 'hitman' (hanks) who's son witnesses a murder causing the boss' son who is a madman to go on a spitful killing spree on his family, Now Michael Sullivan (hanks) and his eldset son Michael must travel across Chicago robbing Rooney's money to start afres...( read more)h.

what a wounderful journey and heart renching relationship from teh once estranged father and son as they learn from one another, beautiful touching moments from an ever so brilliant Hanks who slowly warms up throughout teh film so as to show more of a change; and from Tyler Hoechlin who plays his son. also with film supproting roles from Newman as Rooney the mafia boss and jude law the killer-photographer.

An amazing film in my mind with great cinematography to show the locations and desolate areas of the times.

Also with an impressionable and moving ending and line which will touch everyone who watcheds this film. a worthy film and cast.

    Amazing, Tom Hanks is great
  • July 15, 2009
This is NOTHING like the graphic novel which is 100 times better. Check out Max Allan Collins and Richard Piers Rayner at their best in writing and artwork. What Mendes did to this movie is a crime!!!

Michael Sullivan, Sr. is an enforcer to John Rooney, an Irish American organized crime boss in Illinois during the Great Depression. Sullivan, an orphan raised by Rooney, has worked for the crime boss most of his life. Sullivan and Rooney's son, Connor, are sent by Rooney to talk to Finn McGovern, a disgruntled employee. Sullivan's son, twelve-year-old Michael Sullivan, Jr., follows the enforcers, witnesses Connor's impulsive killing of McGovern, and stumbles into discovery by Connor and his father. Although Sullivan swears his son to secrecy, Connor tries to seal the secret with a failed attempt to kill Sullivan, while murdering Sullivan's wife, Annie, and the younger son, Peter. Sullivan and his son Michael escape the attack and flee to Chicago.

Sullivan requests assistance from Al Capone's crime syndicate to seek revenge, but when he is rejected, Sullivan and his son plan a string of robberies to steal the syndicate's laundered money. Sullivan hopes to coerce Capone into giving up Connor for the money, but Capone instead dispatches assassin Harlen Maguire to kill Sullivan and his son. Maguire sets up a trap for Sullivan with the aid of Rooney's accountant, Alexander Rance. Sullivan arrives at Rance's hotel room, seeking assistance, and Rance stalls him long enough for Maguire to appear. Rance is killed in the crossfire of the ensuing gunfight, but Sullivan escapes, however he is shot in the arm. Maguire receives a superficial wound to his face, where debris is embedded down one side of his head, but he survives. Sullivan's son takes his father to a farm where a childless and elderly couple helps the former enforcer recover. During his recuperation, Sullivan finds in ledgers taken from Rance that Connor had embezzled money from his father under the names of gang members that he had murdered.

When Sullivan recovers, he secretly meets with John Rooney during Mass and shares his discovery about Connor. Rooney refuses to let his son be harmed. Sullivan is forced to hunt down and kill members of Rooney's gang, including John Rooney himself. With the crime boss dead, Capone finds no reason to protect Connor anymore, and Capone's lieutenant Frank Nitti gives Sullivan a tip to track Connor down and kill him. Apparently free from pursuit, Sullivan and his son make their way to the town of Perdition, Michigan. A disfigured Maguire surprises Michael Sullivan Sr. in the summer house of Sarah (Annie's sister). Maguire shoots Sullivan Sr. from behind, and the assassin finds himself held at gunpoint by Sullivan's son. Maguire approaches the son as Sullivan discourages his son from firing to have blood on his hands. Sullivan is able to shoot Maguire from behind instead, and Sullivan dies in his son's arms. The son mourns his father's death and finds his way to the elderly couple that had helped him and his father, growing up with them.

excellent film one of tom hanks finest!!!

A slow and beautiful film, similar to that of American Beauty and mirrored in Revolutionary Road.

This film was amazing. Slow but not boring. It is a slow but absourbing film and highly enjoyable.

There are amazing performances from Hanks, Newman, Craig, Law and child actor...( read more) Tyler Hoechlin.
I sometimes wonder what peiople have against Jude Law. Here, he is menacing and his evil is shown clearly on the screen and his breif appearances are all fantastic, with Law on the top of his game.

Mendes directed this with the beauty he used to direct American Beauty and Revolutinarty Road, but allows lessens that in favour of a slightly grittier feeling. And it works perfectly.

The cinematography is breath taking especially in rain soaked scenes.

I think the screenplay is great and includes memorable lines that will always stay with you, made even more memorable the the delivery of the actors and actresses.

A subtle and sublime, moving and shocking gangster drama that is brilliant. Even better than I thought it would be.

Hard to believe that this is Sam Mendes' second movie.
  • June 30, 2009
Congruous directing, cinematography, score, and editing drives this film to transcend it's less than stellar detail in the dialogue of the writing. Daniel Craig isn't the best cast character, but performances by Hanks, Newman, and Law compensate. Moreover, this might be my favori...( read more)te performance by Hanks. Overall, this is a solid follow-up for Mendes to "American Beauty" (one of the best films of the 90's).
