One of the best films made about legend, robin hood. when Robin and his Moorish companion come to England and the tyranny of the Sheriff of Nottingham, he decides to fight back as an outlaw. great acting by Kevin Costner, Alan Rickman, Morgan Freeman, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Michael Wincott. quite an enjoyable family film. one of the best films of the 1990's and 1991. great action packed fighting scenes involved in this film. this film was directed amazingly by Kevin Reynolds. a great "action & adventure" film. an instant classic.

It started off pretty well, with good character developments, especially of Morgan Freeman's character. It had good plot and some entertaining action scenes.
Later on though it start to drag and therefore causing me to lose interest even in its entertaining action as it all was the same all the way through those 2 and a bit hours.
I'd say it's an average movie and one of those I'd watch only once.

a enjoyable hollywood retelling of robin hood, the famous english outlaw, costner portrays him as a hollywood star only could, and even though his american acent stasnds out a mile, he just about gets away with it, thanks to the film being a enjoyable romp, in no small way is alan rickman as sheriff of nottingham out to capture the hood, in a brilliant over the top performance, with classic lines like, AND CALL OF CHRISTMAS. he is a pantomine villain of the highest callibre, some great support throughout also, christian slater, trying his best, and morgan freeman, doing his usuall wise man role, and the lovely mary elizebeth mastrantonio rounding things off as maid marian, oh and a great cameo right at the end. some exellent set pieces throughout, great locations shot in the u.k, showing off some great history. watch it and be entertained and dont grumble if your english, and hollywood has raped your history, this wasent the first and certainly wasent the last, hello braveheart.

Considering it's large budget, an A-list cast (including a fresh-off-his-Oscar-coup Kevin Costner in the title role), and a fervent desire to be as crowd-pleasing as possible, it's all the more surprising that Kevin Reynolds's 'Prince of Thieves' fails as spectacularly as it does. There's plenty of blame to go around... start with Costner's bland, American-accented turn as the zombie-like titular hero, whose entire character arc can be summed up by his mannequin-like delivery of the awful line 'I will not rest until my father's death has been avenged.' Add into the mix a cadre of hammy supporting thesps (including Alan Rickman, who tries so mightily to steal the movie away from Costner that he could probably be tried for cinematic larceny), flat-tacular staging of the action scenes, and a romantic sub-plot that generates a big fat zilch on the chemistry meter and you've got a pretty dismal movie all around. Most puzzling, though, is director Reynolds's unsettling emphasis on grisly, ugly violence in place of true thrills... you've never seen so much bone crunching, limb severing, organ piercing grue in a PG-13 flick before (something which only serves to emphasize the hypocrisy of the MPAA, which gives a free pass to vile efforts like 'Prince of Thieves' while slapping harmless junk like 'The Lost Boys' with an R rating).

Kevin Costner has a real talent, and it's not acting. It's more like having a British accent for 10 percent of the movie and a mullet. Sure, a mullet can be a talent. And also, Alan Rickman.

It was a good movie, except for Kevin Costner being his pretentious, douchy self and thinking he doesn't need to have an accent. That is the only fault I find with it. Alan Rickman saved it from Kevin Costner's terrible acting.

A disgustingly self-aggradizing movie on Costner's part; one can't help but wonder what a collision of egoes it would be if he were to make a film with Mel Gibson. Played strictly for dramatic poses and heroic gestures, it's obvious that plot and characterisations can go hang as this is just Costner's boyhood fantasy play. A terrible waste of Alan Rickman.

An excellent take on this folklore, an all star cast and a great plot make for one of my all time favourite movies, and one of the only movies from my childhood to stand the test of time.

Too bad Kevin couldn't be bothered to adopt the proper accent for this romantic adventure. No wait, on second thought: It's just as well, he'd never have pulled it off without being ridiculed to bits. Alan Rickman is delightfully evil as the Sheriff of Nottingham

One of those memorable fantastic films you could watch again and again. I wonderful portrayal of Robin Hood's story. The villian (Rickman's character) was a complete hilarity. All the characters were GREAT

I don't like Kevin Costner & Christian Slater. But Alan Rickman and Morgan Freeman are brilliant in this movie together with many other actors. The last scene in this movie is just best and surprising ;-)

Those who bemoan this film as being silly are missing the point, this film isn't silly it's a goddamn pantomime, and it knows it. From Kevin Costner's American Robin to Morgan Freeman's token black character and then to Alan Rickman stealing the film with a performance that's so over the top it threatens to send the film into farcial territory. And yet somehow it manages to tread the line perfectly and stay just the right side of ludicrously entertaining. Feel free to sit through it and pick it to pieces, that's no challenge. But sit back, accept the silliness, go with it and you just might find yourself entertained.

Why do they insist on doing these movies with actors who can't do accents. Fuck you Costner you mediocre bastard!

I know what's wrong with this movie and I like it anyway. It is not profound, or magically romantic or epic. What it is is fun to watch and has enough funny dialogue to carry it out from the dreck pile. I would have cast someone else as Robin Hood and Marion, but everyone else was not half bad. I prefer Mel Brooks' parody, but that's just me being cynical.

Agreed, Alan Rickman makes one of the best bad guys of all time. Costner did well too though.

Favorite line ever though has to go to Duncan and Azeem

"Curse those Moors and Saracens. If it wasn't for their ungodly ways, master Robin would never have left. What manner of name is Azeem? Scottish, Cornish?" - Duncan

    "Moorish" - Azeem

As a child I must have watched this film about a 100 times. I was completely obsessed with it. Now when i watch it i notice it has corny acting and silly characters, but I still can't help but love it for the pure sentimental value it holds.

I give it a 3 because of Alan Rickman and Morgan Freeman to a certain extent. Kevin Kostner is not Robin Hood, whose only purpose is to make Men in Tights that much funnier.
