Kevin Cosnter as Robin Hood. It felt so good at that time.

Massively overrated at the time, I always wanted Alan Rickman to kill Kevin Costner in the end.

In its time this was huge, I don't know why, I never liked it. Its very bad and very inaccurate. Costner is laughable as Hood and Rickman, although funny, is waaay too pantomime, the whole cast is poor really, and the action and look is very obviously on sets. The title song from...( read more) Bryan Adams is the only thing thats any good.

I love the interaction between Costner's Robin Hood and Freeman's Muslim friend. The culture clash between Christian and Muslim back in this time period is a good concept, though probably not historically likely to happen in this way. It is because of the Muslim world that many...( read more) philosophical and mechanical writings of the ancient world survived. The Muslims were more technically and intellectually advanced at the time. It is an interesting way to look at the story from a more political religious angle rather than the traditional mythical fantasy romance angle.

The romance is there, but it develops in a more rough environment, not so tender and heartwarming. Mastrantonio does alright in the romantic lead. But this story is more about clever booby traps, flaming arrows, and swords.

I've read Rickman turned down the role of The Sheriff several times until he was told he could have more freedom in the role. Well, he takes that freedom and runs with it. He plays one crazy twisted Sheriff. But it gets a little over the top for me when he's trying to rape/consummate/honeymoon with Maid Marian on the floor of the chapel while the priest is still finishing the rushed wedding ceremony. Ugh?!

The scenery is good and costuming believable (without the green tights) for setting the period. There are good supporting performances by all, especially from Robin's Merry Men. There are several moments that this movie has in common with Costner's Dances with Wolves from the year before, but overall there are enough differences to keep me entertained.

The perfect Robin Hood adventure, taking all the bits and pieces the story needs, with the classic river staff fight, the splinting an arrow with an arrow, a certain Sean Connery in a King Lionheart cameo, a fantastic villain in the shape of Alan Rickman, Morgan Freeman as a side...( read more)kick, a wonderful soundtrack and a good sense of humor. The pace and timing is good, the acting too, it's exciting, funny and entertaining. In short, the perfect popcorn movie. Half a star extra for all the nice memories I connect with this film.

I originally had no interest in watching this movie but my boyfriend made me watch it and I thought it was amazing and the comedic relief by Alan Rickman was amazing i think he made the movie.

Kevin Costner can't speak with an English accent, but that doesn't prevent this movie from being great. Everyone knows the story of Robin Hood, but these actors together give the film something that isn't in the stories. Watch it!

quite... interesting seeing morgan freeman as a Moor.

As much as I like Kevin Costner and he suits the role of Robin Hood (at least in Reynold's vision of Robin Hood), the movie was rather unsatisfying. Maybe I expected something else. The 1991 Robin Hood is at its heart a bow to the old Sword&Sandal movies a la Fairbanks and Flynn....( read more) Lots of Slapstick scenes and everything is funny or lighthearted, the only thing missing is people starting to sing out of the blue. I do like my campy cinema as the next one, but the legend of Robin Hood has so much good ole' Anglican grim to offer, it is a shame to turn it into a theme park ride. Even rape and torture are subject to jokes in the movie, clearly a step to far for my taste. The characters are grotesque and burleseque and thus, the movie always remains on a goofy Disney level, featuring big-nosed lanky villains, fat priests and big-bearded moron celts. I know Robin Hood is a legend, but it is a historical legend and should be treated as such. The set design is awful, like a children's game show. Green neon lights in the water, floodlights in the wood and so forth, yuk ! Costner does what he does best, but unfortunately the movie reduces him to a Gene Kelly-type swashbuckler with no real depth, no Dances with Wolves moments here. Morgan Freeman is good, as always, but his role is very limited as well and evolves around the basic fact that he is a foreigner. Alan Rickman mocks his own character and you can tell that he turned down the role twice, because he clearly thinks the movie is rubbish and tries to fill it up the brim with his bizarre acting, one of the few enjoyable things, Rickman as the flamboyant villain of Hammer Horror proportions. Christian Slater once again proves while nobody in Hollywood knows him anymore, this many truly has got no talent and it hurts my eyes to see him. The music and direction are typical Hollywood fartastic, crap. It is a shame really, a better direction and maybe more corage to depart from schematic characters would have done the movie good. The story goes from here to there, you know it, nothing to surprise anyone. I dont think Gladiator 2, oh sorry, the Robin Hood by Ridley Scott will be any better though, terrible trailer.

Anyway, stay away from it, unless you really want to listen to Bryan Adams's song in score format.

Agreed, Alan Rickman makes one of the best bad guys of all time. Costner did well too though.

Favorite line ever though has to go to Duncan and Azeem

"Curse those Moors and Saracens. If it wasn't for their ungodly ways, master Robin would never have left. What manner of name is Azeem? Scottish, Cornish?" - Duncan

    "Moorish" - Azeem

As a child I must have watched this film about a 100 times. I was completely obsessed with it. Now when i watch it i notice it has corny acting and silly characters, but I still can't help but love it for the pure sentimental value it holds.

I like how they included a little history on the Crusades in the film. It ran very smoothly, flowed nicely, and overall, its defintely one of the classics!

I give it a 3 because of Alan Rickman and Morgan Freeman to a certain extent. Kevin Kostner is not Robin Hood, whose only purpose is to make Men in Tights that much funnier.
