Well,Kevin Costner failed to sport a british accent but overall this movie is great! Rickman won an award for his hilarious portrayal of the Sheriff!

an enjoyable hollywood movie retelling of robin hood, the famous english outlaw who stolefrom the rich and gave it to the poor. this film isn't about that story, this film is about Robin and his Moorish companion come to England and the tyranny of the Sheriff of Nottingham, he decides to fight back as an outlaw. great performances by Kevin Costner,Alan Rickman and also Morgan Freeman.great locations shot in the u.k, showing off some great history. i have to say this i think that Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves is much better than Mel Gibson's Braveheart.

How can anyone NOT like this movie? I mean seriously.
You've gotta sure as hell like the Bryan Adam's "Everything I do" soundtrack at least.

Brilliant movie, slick acting and well, just a great "I'm bored let's watch something." movie.

Great but hardly believable rendition of the old Robin Hood saga. As an adventure film it is fantastic, in spite of the fake british accents. Cinematically questionable but I really liked it. Also it features one of my favorite actors; Alan Rickman - not his best performance but at least he plays a very colorful version of prince John.

THis was a fun film. Nothing more, but well done, if you can see past 'Kevin' Hood. Costner seldom is able to make me believe he is anyone other than himself in his roles.

I finally saw this movie. I liked it vey much. Good enterteinement. Very funny at times and tragic at some other times. Nice little romance. Although we already know the story line of Robin Hood, it is always nice to see good triumphing from evil.

`Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" is a murky, unfocused, violent and depressing version of the classic story, with little of the lightheartedness and romance we expect from Robin Hood. It's shot mostly at night or in gloomy forests, beneath overcasts or by flickering firelight or in gloomy dungeons, which is all very well for the atmosphere, but makes the action scenes almost impossible to follow.

Among the movie's many problems: Kevin Costner plays a tortured, thoughtful Robin Hood, totally lacking in the joy of living that we associate with the character. The romance between Robin and Maid Marian (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) seems inspired more by necessity than by desire, as if both of them had read the book and knew they were required to fall in love. The most colorful character is the villain, the Sheriff of Nottingham (Alan Rickman), but both the character and the performance are inappropriate for this film.

And the amount of gore is appalling in a film that will presumably be aimed at a family market.

To begin with the gore: The movie begins with a hand being chopped off, and continues with various amputations, gorings, stabbings, burnings, floggings, hangings (a small boy is one of the intended hanging victims), explosions, and falls from great heights, before reaching a climax of sorts as the Sheriff of Nottingham attempts to rape Maid Marian, and has just succeeded in spreading her legs (a graphic, floor-level shot here) before Robin Hood comes swinging in through the window to save her.

Then there is the general moral climate of the movie, in which all of the priests are seen as corrupt or drunken swine, and the Sheriff consults an old crone in a dungeon who foretells the future by reading blood and chicken bones. The leading cleric of Nottingham is a turncoat and a liar, who marries Marian to the Sheriff against her will while the castle is under siege. You know we have entered a shaky liturgical era when Friar Tuck is the most religious person in the film.

The movie casts Robin Hood as sort of a populist guerrilla, a Che Guevera with bow and arrow who lives with his followers in Sherwood Forest and intercepts the king's mail by using tunnels and camouflaged hiding places under the forest floor, Viet Cong-style.

His best friend and right-hand man is a Moor (Morgan Freeman), who he has brought back from the holy land after saving his life in prison. His biggest disciplinary problem is a young hothead (Christian Slater), who is so obviously bursting with a secret he desires to share that it's amazing Robin is able to wait almost until the end of the movie before learning it.

Much has been said about Kevin Costner's British accent, or lack of same, in advance publicity about the movie. Neither the accent nor the lack of same bothered me in the slightest. What bothered me was that the filmmakers never found the right tone for Costner to use, no matter what his accent. He isn't joyous, or robust, or comical, or heroic, but more of a thoughtful, civilized, socially responsible Robin Hood, sort of a nonpartisan saint who wants to preserve the kingdom for the absent Richard the Lionhearted.

Costner plays Robin Hood as if he were Alan Alda.

Alan Rickman, in complete contrast, plays the Sheriff as if he were David Letterman: He's a wicked, droll, sly, witty master of the put-down and one-liners, who rolls his eyes in exasperation when Robin comes bursting in to interrupt the rape. Rickman's performance has nothing to do with anything else in the movie, and indeed seems to proceed from a uniquely personal set of assumptions about what century, universe, etc., the story is set in, but at least when Rickman appears on the screen we perk up, because we know we'll be entertained, at whatever cost to the story.

The only major player who finds the right tone and voice for all of his scenes is Morgan Freeman, as the Moor, who finds humor when it is needed, courage when it is required, and somehow even survives being given a running joke that has to be carefully nurtured from one end of the movie to the other. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio does what she can with Marian, but must have been confused when the screenplay gave her a thoughtful, independent woman in the earlier scenes, and then turned her into a cliched damsel in distress at the end.

The costumes look as if they have things growing in them.

The treehouses in Sherwood Forest permit Robin and his men to engage in a key battle scene that looks like a cross between "Tarzan" and the savage tribesmen at the end of "Apocalypse Now." (This battle deserves greater analysis. In it, hired Celtic mercenaries attack Robin's band and are all but destroyed, after which they only then use their fire catapults, and all but destroy Robin's side, after which, for the later assault on the castle, Robin hardly seems to have lost a man.) The music is your standard rum-dummy-dum false epic dirge kind of stuff. The editing is desperate. The most depressing thing about the movie is that children will attend it expecting to have a good time.

One of the best films made about legend, robin hood. when Robin and his Moorish companion come to England and the tyranny of the Sheriff of Nottingham, he decides to fight back as an outlaw. great acting by Kevin Costner, Alan Rickman, Morgan Freeman, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Michael Wincott. quite an enjoyable family film. one of the best films of the 1990's and 1991. great action packed fighting scenes involved in this film. this film was directed amazingly by Kevin Reynolds. a great "action & adventure" film. an instant classic.

It started off pretty well, with good character developments, especially of Morgan Freeman's character. It had good plot and some entertaining action scenes.
Later on though it start to drag and therefore causing me to lose interest even in its entertaining action as it all was the same all the way through those 2 and a bit hours.
I'd say it's an average movie and one of those I'd watch only once.

a enjoyable hollywood retelling of robin hood, the famous english outlaw, costner portrays him as a hollywood star only could, and even though his american acent stasnds out a mile, he just about gets away with it, thanks to the film being a enjoyable romp, in no small way is alan rickman as sheriff of nottingham out to capture the hood, in a brilliant over the top performance, with classic lines like, AND CALL OF CHRISTMAS. he is a pantomine villain of the highest callibre, some great support throughout also, christian slater, trying his best, and morgan freeman, doing his usuall wise man role, and the lovely mary elizebeth mastrantonio rounding things off as maid marian, oh and a great cameo right at the end. some exellent set pieces throughout, great locations shot in the u.k, showing off some great history. watch it and be entertained and dont grumble if your english, and hollywood has raped your history, this wasent the first and certainly wasent the last, hello braveheart.

Considering it's large budget, an A-list cast (including a fresh-off-his-Oscar-coup Kevin Costner in the title role), and a fervent desire to be as crowd-pleasing as possible, it's all the more surprising that Kevin Reynolds's 'Prince of Thieves' fails as spectacularly as it does. There's plenty of blame to go around... start with Costner's bland, American-accented turn as the zombie-like titular hero, whose entire character arc can be summed up by his mannequin-like delivery of the awful line 'I will not rest until my father's death has been avenged.' Add into the mix a cadre of hammy supporting thesps (including Alan Rickman, who tries so mightily to steal the movie away from Costner that he could probably be tried for cinematic larceny), flat-tacular staging of the action scenes, and a romantic sub-plot that generates a big fat zilch on the chemistry meter and you've got a pretty dismal movie all around. Most puzzling, though, is director Reynolds's unsettling emphasis on grisly, ugly violence in place of true thrills... you've never seen so much bone crunching, limb severing, organ piercing grue in a PG-13 flick before (something which only serves to emphasize the hypocrisy of the MPAA, which gives a free pass to vile efforts like 'Prince of Thieves' while slapping harmless junk like 'The Lost Boys' with an R rating).

Kevin Costner has a real talent, and it's not acting. It's more like having a British accent for 10 percent of the movie and a mullet. Sure, a mullet can be a talent. And also, Alan Rickman.

It was a good movie, except for Kevin Costner being his pretentious, douchy self and thinking he doesn't need to have an accent. That is the only fault I find with it. Alan Rickman saved it from Kevin Costner's terrible acting.

A disgustingly self-aggradizing movie on Costner's part; one can't help but wonder what a collision of egoes it would be if he were to make a film with Mel Gibson. Played strictly for dramatic poses and heroic gestures, it's obvious that plot and characterisations can go hang as this is just Costner's boyhood fantasy play. A terrible waste of Alan Rickman.

Too bad Kevin couldn't be bothered to adopt the proper accent for this romantic adventure. No wait, on second thought: It's just as well, he'd never have pulled it off without being ridiculed to bits. Alan Rickman is delightfully evil as the Sheriff of Nottingham
