Thought it was really good Whalberg does a great job and was different from most of his other roles. Looks pretty fucking awesome being a rockstar espically back in the 80s back when rock was huge. Great soundtrack and the steel dragon songs were pretty good, I thought aninston s...( read more)eemed a little to old for her part though.

This is just one of those movies that takes you back to the big hair and glam rock/metal of the 80's. The movie stars Mark Wahlberg who gets to become the lead singer of his favorite rock band Steel Dragon during a falling out with the original singer. The movie has some original...( read more) rock music made for just the movie. It ws quite good to my surprise. Plus you get music in there from Kiss, Motley Crue and Bon Jovi. The story is decent and has a solid supporting cast. It was entertaining enough. Worth a one time watch.

This movie sounds like SHIT! I'll probably end up watching it anyway...

Another typical rockstar backstage life type movie, and nothing else. It wasn't bad, but it isn't a movie that would last 10mins in my head after leaving the theater. Didn't think Wahlberg was good for the role; he lacked the core of what it means to be a rockstar; attitude. Ever...( read more)ything feels forced into the act. The soundtrack was pretty enough for the movie, but the whole rocker lifestyle isn't really captured in essence. It's not that easy and straightforward being in a rock/metal band (I'd know, I'm in one), and personally if I had to catch something with a thumbs up to being an aspiring musician going somewhere/anywhere, I'd rather catch Detroit Rock City or 8 Mile. Overall, it had potential, but unfortunately it's just another pop movie.

I really tried to watch this Movie, though slept like after 15 minutes.

Note to all Flixster people; this actually happened with the rock band "Journey". They saw a fan's YouTube of their performance, and now the guy is their lead singer. ^^

  • August 25, 2009
A great movie about idiolising your favorite band, even dressing and trying to sound like them, living the dream, realising the costs of that dream, and then leaving it all behind for that one person who stuck by you from the start. A few cameos by some 80's and 90's rock musicia...( read more)ns. A decent soundtrack, as well. Wahlberg has some good stage presence.

I intially wanted to watch it for Dominic West but as he didn't have a very big part, i was stuck with watching Mark Wahlberg prancing around and singing which i quite enjoyed. But its slow in parts not much to the story however, i like the ending!
  • July 12, 2009
Pretty much shows you how awesome your life would be if the band you idolised ask you to play for them. Sex, drugs, rock and roll and Marky Mark, haha. Pretty sure Wahlberg wasn't singing these tunes, but did a good job none the less. Jennifer Aniston, it should be illegal for he...( read more)r to act...she's just a bitchface. Excellent soundtrack to this though, being set in the 80s-90s.

  • June 4, 2009
Maybe I just like Mark Wahlberg, but it was a good movie.
  • May 25, 2009
A bit cheesy, but the presence of guitar brute Zakk Wylde and great tunes makes up for it.
  • May 24, 2009
    This is my favorite movie!
  • May 8, 2009
maybe....sometime...if I have nothing else to watch
  • April 25, 2009

This is definitely one of my guilty pleasures. I love love love when during the credits they start dancing to good vibrations.

  • February 27, 2009
I actually found this movie very introuging and I really liked it. Maybe beccasue i've alwys loved the whole "rockstar" scene and everything. And the music wasn't so bad either...pretty entertaining.
  • February 26, 2009
Is a nice heavy metal movie, but in the end i have the impression to be telling a poser guy history, not a evolution like a metalhead musician.

End Zack Wyllde is awesome in thsi movie, like the batmobile too.!
  • February 26, 2009
pretty decent movie starring mark wahlberg and jennifer anniston. takes a look inside the 'hair' bands of the 80's and how being a 'rockstar' can really take a toll...any fan of rock would enjoy this movie
  • February 19, 2009
    This movie gives me goosebumps!!!
  • February 16, 2009
Lame until Marky Mark showed up.
  • February 9, 2009
Rather depressing, but gives good insight into how much the life of a rockstar actually sucks, instead of glorifying it like so many other movies.
  • January 28, 2009
    not one of his best!
  • January 28, 2009
Lograr tu "sueño" para descubrir que no es lo que querías jmm no es lo que espera ver en una película aunque para el final agarra un ritmo hasta bonito
  • January 26, 2009
awesome, songs are cool! mark whalberg can sing after all, LOL
  • January 21, 2009
I really liked this movie, and the songs...isn't this like a dream for any band?
  • January 15, 2009
Mark Whalberg at his best. Great soundtrack.
  • January 11, 2009
This film takes you back to the 80s, the days of hair metal and tells the story of a hard rock singer becoming the new lead of his favorite band. While the movie takes its time to introduce the tribute band he is starting with and his actual time on top of the game feels a bit ru...( read more)shed in the second half, it is still always entertaining and the good scenes (like the "Once in a lifetime" montage) outweigh the stupid ones (car race, WTF?). While the plot mostly sticks to the expected stereotypes of rise to fame, sex, drugs and rock'n roll and the burden of it all on a relationship, there is surprisingly little drama and it's all wrapped up rather nicely after all. The end credits also show that the creators probably didn't take this as seriously as the movie sometimes feels. The soundtrack with the likes of Bon Jovi, Def Leppard and AC/DC makes for a nostalgic trip back to those days as well. For fans of the (music) genre: not bad at all.

Another one to put in the "either a really bad movie with a few good parts, or a good movie with some absolutely terrible parts" file.

I have to admit, I expected to hate it, which I didn't. I set the bar low, and enjoyed it for the most part: it's fraught with irritating melo...( read more)drama and a few continuity errors (how do the fans still call him Izzy and buy his English accent on TV when he does his "I'm a regular guy..." speech - and all other concert dialogue - in his normal American-accented voice, for instance?), but it's a fun story with original "Steel Dragons" songs by 80s heavyweights including Ronnie Dio, Zakk Wylde and Sammy Hagar... not to mention Twiggy Ramirez and Desmond Child.

Though the best part might be the archive footage shown over the credits, this movie delivered exactly what I expected: a pleasurable distraction with a rocking soundtrack.

Two surprises: (1) Timothy Spall, who got most of the film's more sincere moments, and (2) it's based on the true story of the second lead singer of Judas Priest... in passing, the "audition a tribute band lead singer" phenomenon is truly out there: Journey replaced Steve Perry with a 5-foot-nothing Filipino kid (with wicked pipes) and Black Flag replaced their lead singer with Henry Rollins WHILE ON STAGE. It's not so far-fetched...
  • December 18, 2008
Mark Wahlberg stars in the movie loosely based on the Judas Priest Rob Halford story. Great touching story featuring great 80s music written by Zakk Wylde. Definately a must see.
  • December 13, 2008
good movie. saw this back in 2001. and great songs too. by the way, Mark Wahlberg looked a bit like Dave Mustaine of Megadeth in some scenes
