I liked Rocky. Its not really a boxing film though, its a film about one mans self realisation. Its also a love story. A story of morals, overcoming subversity, a tale of the human condition if you will. Its not really about boxing at all! A film of its time, a time I'm very fond...( read more) of on film, its classic 70's direction is fantastic....BUT, and its a big but, no matter how much you love it, you've got to admit that it spawned a hell of a lot of shite, not just lame sporting films, but a whole load of lazy filmmakers stole its style, structure, everything. One word, montage! Still, not Mr. Stallones fault, he's very good in it (alas, its still impossible to understand a word he's saying though). Its just an absolute crime that it beat All the President's Men, Bound for Glory, Network & Taxi Driver. Taxi Driver for fuck sake!!!!
Never mind, rant over, Rocky 1 is a great film.

"His whole life was a million-to-one shot."

Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), a Philadelphia boxer, is but one step removed from total bum-hood. A once-promising pugilist, Rocky is now taking nickel-and-dime bouts and running strong arm errands for local loan sharks to s...( read more)urvive. Even his supportive trainer, Mickey (Burgess Meredith), has given up on Rocky. All this changes thanks to Muhammad Ali-like super-boxer Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). With the Bicentennial celebration coming up, Creed must find a "Cinderella" opponent for the big July 4th bout -- some unknown whom Creed can "glorify" for a few minutes before knocking him cold.

Rocky is an extraordinary film that deserves all the critical appraisal it gets. It is a shame people misconceive Rocky as simply being a boxing movie. I think it is because its sequels contributed to that error in judgement. Rocky III and IV were simple formulaic boxing movies. Rocky I, however, is completely different. When I watched it I remember thinking to myself how effective the ending was and how brilliant Stallone was in the film. You know when you've watched a great movie when you have goosebumps - of course it differs for everyone - I'm quite aware of that. Different scenes in other movies render certain emotions in some people that it may fail to achieve in others. In my case, Rocky worked for me.
