This movie probably as close to a perfect film as you're ever likely to see out of Hong Kong. All the elements click: a terrific script, that even manages to subvert the odd cliché, reliably imaginative direction by Johnny To, and excellent central performances by Andy Lau and Ching Wan Lau, the latter displaying his great comic timing to wonderful effect.
I remember watching this movie 7 or 8 years ago on a plane. I remember I was really into the story, and Andy Lau made me cry at the end. Then again, I was jet-lagged and a little delirious which could have contributed to me becoming emotional. My rating of the movie may change after I watch it again at another time. I'd recommend this for those who like fun and hip Asian crime movies.
I like Andy Lau very much, so I'm always looking out for his movies. It's not always good, but he is though. This is a story we've seen before, but it's a good one.
One of the smartest cat-and-mouse movies I've ever seen. Even though the two leads are on opposite sides of the law, they develop sort of a bizarre camraderie, which makes the numerous plot twists that much more engaging.
Interesting thriller with a dying criminal having a battle of wits with a cool-headed negotiator and leaves you wondering what the criminal's objective is and how it will all end up.
