Rushmore Reviews and Ratings

There apparently is a huge audience for stuff like this, but I'm certainly not included. This is a movie that is way more concerned with being quirky and different than being compelling, entertaining or developing any good, likable characters. The movie's also way too interested ...( read more)in blaring indie rock over a bunch of montages. It's as if you can almost hear the director or whomever yelling at you bragging about how awesome their taste in music is. The movie reminded me a bit of Juno in these ways... definitely a bad thing for me, but a good thing for a lot of other people, for whatever reason.
The "protagonist" is so unbelievably strange and unlikable, just a little more so than just about every other character. I guess what I don't understand is how so many people can like a movie that seems to be honestly portraying people's lives and social interactions, etc. as being so damn weird and seemingly so... detached from reality.

    Everybody smokes in this film!
  • November 13, 2009
Beautiful people in this movie, great theme and suprise... the only dvd movie i own.
  • November 10, 2009
Hillarious! Wes's great start (not including Bottle Rockets which I have yet to watch).
  • November 5, 2009
Coming-of-age sleeper comedy brought to life in typical Wes Anderson style.
  • November 2, 2009
Wish I hadn't waited so long to see such a great film. Wes Anderson is fast becoming one of my fave directors. (A young) Jason Schwartzman plays the title role brilliantly

My favorite movie of all time. The use of color and the theatrical setting of the film make it an almost magical journey through the angst filled mine field of an adolescent males life. When I first saw this movie I was in the same awkward stage of my life that Max was in during ...( read more)the course of the film. Whenever I watch it I get an almost euphoric sense of nostalgia that makes it an amazing experience for me, every single time I watch it. All that aside... the performances by Jason Schwartzman and Bill Murray were among the best in there careers as well. Olivia Williams paints a hauntingly clear portrait of the character of Miss Cross, a woman who is in love with a man long dead. The use of the seasons as the titles for the different acts of the movie. As you watch this film you start to realize that the film itself is like one of Max's productions in the film itself which is what makes this film unique. The colors in this movie are as vibrant as the colors used in a renaissance painting, just beautiful. With all the things that are right with this film, what could be wrong?

a wickedly funny script and good performances by jason schwartzman and bill murray. And the soundtracks are great too.
  • October 28, 2009
The story wasn't too "american" or obvious, but... I still found the love triangle quite disturbing..but I guess the acting was good since Sschwartzman behaviour and character is supposed to be a bit different and weird. Though his love for Mrs. Cross made me feel a bit uneasy.
  • October 27, 2009
A beautiful, brutal, and hilarious film.

    Comwecial or stupid! :|
  • October 24, 2009
This movie was such a breath of fresh air when it arrived on the scene. So quirky but sooo real. No fairy tales here, just (often) painful honesty.Very dry comedy, the humor is smart but very subtle. Good cast and script. Great production, direction and an amazing soundtrack. 4-1...( read more)/2 stars.

It just leaves me wanting a little more Bill Murray
  • September 30, 2009
Heard how great this movie was, so i put it in. it was painful for me to get through. again, not a fan of wes anderson, dont get his humor at all
  • September 13, 2009
What is Wes Anderson's obsession with handjobs in this movie? Bill Murray is at his best.
  • September 6, 2009
Las películas de Anderson tienen dos características dominantes, excelente soundtrack y elenco, y en esta no decepcionan ninguna de las dos.
  • September 2, 2009
This is Anderson at his best. It was easily the best 'indie comedy' of the late 90's and it really established both Anderson and Schwartzman and it also gave Bill Murray's carrier a kick up the arse too. It surprises me how many people seem to have missed this gem of a film. Bril...( read more)liant.

    "She was my Rushmore"

The king of Rushmore prep school is put on academic probation.

    REVIEW

Hilarious comedy a la `Ferris Bueller's Day Off' as written by John Cheever: enterprising young Schwa...( read more)rtzman (in a memorable acting debut; son of Talia Shire) as Max Fischer, a prep school student at the titular institution ? whose ambitions are only mired by his lack of decent marks, with even higher set goals in wooing a second grade teacher played by the sexy Williams. But it is Murray who (rightfully) steals the film as a rich philanthropist who befriends Schwartzman only to betray him by also falling for his love-to-be, with a truly funny turn pulling out all the stops including slapstick falls and a great scene of depression in action at a family poolside party (one for the archives). Written by Owen Wilson and Wes Anderson (who also directed and both teamed up for their freshman gem, `Bottle Rocket') the film is smartly executed and makes even a sometimes unlikable character an empathetic symbol of adolescent anomie. Brilliant filmmaking of the high order and Murray was robbed of a justifiable Oscar nomination for supporting actor !

    O. R. they? lol
  • August 25, 2009
Una de las mejores bandas de sonido de la historia. Ganial
  • August 18, 2009
Quirky off-beat take on teen angst that seems to get better with time. I like this one a lot more now than when I first saw it ten years ago (that may say more about me than it does about Rushmore).
  • August 13, 2009
One of the worst movies I've ever seen
  • August 9, 2009
"She's my Rushmore Max." A film bursting with sly jokes and beautiful desgin, supported by both Jason Schwartzman's iconic turn as a schoolboy and Bill Murray's drunk millionaire, who from the center (yes, the center) of an unlikely love triangle.
  • August 4, 2009
a strange film with an array of strange characters. it's hard to explain really, you have to really watch it to know what i mean. i'm not sure if i like it or not.
  • July 26, 2009
Wes Anderson's very very very very best. The best version of the Bill Murray archetype.
  • July 24, 2009
Another masterwork by Wes Anderson! Quirky? Yes! A lot of people will get turned off of this film, but then again people don't usually have an open mind. It's an odd variation on a 'coming of age tale' that only Anderson could craft. The soundtrack is PERFECT, the actors are so f...( read more)luent, and this movie is brilliant!

Schwartzman annoys the crap out of me. This role is the reason!

  • July 17, 2009
not brilliant, but interesting enough for a one-time view.
  • July 4, 2009
Perfect everything, script cast, and music. A Classic.

    Perfect. This movie is hilarious.

Max Fischer is a fifteen year old barber's son with so-so grades who has just made it into the exclusive Rushmore Academy, where he falls in love with Olivia Williams (I know I would, in fact I did, when she starred in "The Postman", which was a 1997 movie, while this came only a...( read more) year later, so technically I was first.)

The rest of the film is Fischer's attempts to seduce Williams (or rather, the first-grade teacher she interprets, who is just as attractive as she), by using his superhuman gifts for extracurricular activities, campaigning and fundraising, and also by resorting to some very dirty tricks against his rivals, one of whom is his new best friend Bill Murray.

"Rushmore" is an oddball comedy that never becomes disturbing. Fischer is a rather persistent stalker, sure, but he never crosses the line into sociopathic behaviour, unlike some recent twisted protagonists of romantic comedies (such as "The Science of Sleep" or "Punch Drunk Love".) He is the Jewish neurotic, not the Jewish psychotic, which I tend to prefer.

The closest film I could compare "Rushmore" to is "Napoleon Dynamite", because the protagonists of both movies are socially maladjusted but endearing excentrics with real talents, and both films manage to create a strange mixture of painful autobiographical realism and fairy-tale implausibility.

The camerawork was also excellent, with Wes Anderson showing a real sense of composition and tempo. I am definitely adding him to my list of directors to follow.

    no thanks not for me
  • June 15, 2009
Too much fun. Love sucks and makes you do crazy things. Jason & Bill were masterful!! Inspired soundtrack.
  • June 13, 2009
I'm not sure where my love for Wes Anderson films began. It could have been this film, or The Life Aquatic or The Royal Tenenbaums, but one thing is for sure, Wes Anderson has a particular directing style that I find very attractive. This movie is witty and entertaining.
  • May 18, 2009
Anything with Olivia Williams in it is worth watching. Otherwise, ok as films about geeky kids go. Bill Murray's character is strange but the plot is typical of Wes Anderson stuff: weird.
  • May 6, 2009
Wes Anderson is a genius! Bill Murrays performance's are the best of his carrer in Andersons films.
  • May 2, 2009
This is Murray's first collaboration with director Wes Anderson and co-written by Owen Wilson. Although Bill Murray is in the supporting role, he steals the show. I would have loved to see Owen Wilson in Jason Schwartzman's part but probably been a little to old.
  • April 24, 2009
Bill Murray is always cool with me:D
  • April 10, 2009
    drawn out but decent. 4/10.
  • April 10, 2009
Only worthwhile film by Anderson so far
  • April 5, 2009
Original, creative, funny and mostly hilarious on a lot of ways, Rushmore is a delightful comedy for everyone.
  • April 3, 2009
this is the sort of film that i grow fonder of over time. its the little nuances that do it for me, things you dont notice the first time around but are quirky and hilarious the more you think about them. overall great comedy.
  • April 1, 2009
Jason Schwartzman is great in this.
