Joanna (Jadwiga Jankowska-Cieslak) and Jan (Krzysztof Stroinski) are a pair of academics in their mid-sixties who are celebrating forty years of matrimony. Some friends throw them a party for the occasion, but one of the presents they receive throws their relationship into chaos -- it's a videotape of a television documentary that implicates Jan as an informer to the Polish Secret Police during the years the nation was under Soviet control. The film also suggests that Jan married Joanna as part of a plan to keep tabs on her father, a former politician who came to be viewed with suspicion by the state. Jan fiercely denies the charges, and Joanna desperately wants to believe him, but as she tries to find evidence that will clear his name, she becomes painfully aware that nearly everyone who came of age during the Communist era seems to have a skeleton in their closet they struggle to keep hidden.
