Jason London, Marcia Gay Harden, Nick Stahl

This family drama, based on a novel by Ellyn Bache, is overly familiar in its concentration of cracked secrets and family revelations all pouring down during a brief crisis. But it has a fine cast ...( read more  read more... )led by Susan Sarandon, and they make the whole enterprise a watchable affair. Sarandon plays a middle-aged mother of a brood of mostly grown sons. Suffering from empty-nest syndrome, she tends toward anxious dreams in which one or another of the boys is missing overseas. After having a nightmare that one--a Marine assigned to a Sinai peacekeeping force--has been hurt, word comes that a terrorist attack has indeed left his status in question. As the rest of the family gathers in the glare of fear--including Sarandon's estranged husband (Sam Shepard), suffering some form of (metaphorical) blindness--lots of unspoken things are said about old rivalries, ancient grievances, etc. It's all a bit thickly designed, but the likes of Robert Sean Leonard, Sean Astin, Marcia Gay Harden, Nick Stahl, and most of all Sarandon make it entirely palatable. --Tom Keogh

From Ellyn Bache's novel about the feisty mother of seven boys, most of whom are now grown and out of the house, still worrying after them, concerned over their health and safety, which eventually puts a strain on her sanity. The relationship between the mother and the sons being...( read more) the most explored and the relationship between the mother and father. The script is well written, the cast is uniformly excellent with Susan Sarandon at her always brilliant best.It is I think an entertaining and uplifting little movie that is worthy of a look.

Good because of the acting. Nothing really happens in this movie, it's a great deal of waiting, which I understand is the point but in this case is not compelling enough.

If my memory serves right then this film was watchable and enjoyable - if not a little easy to foget. The greatest parts of this film are mainly due to the amazing performances put forward by the cast. With the likes of Sarandon, Astin and Leonard though you can hardly be suprised!
