I really liked this in the end, it's loopy fun at it's best and even though a lot of it doesn't make sense, you sort of just smile and take it as it is. I really loved Bi as the man who stole people's abilities and the guy who kept apologizing for everything (even car accidents). ^_^
Cute, funny and captivating for the most part (even if it had some blank moments) this romantic comedy brings Chan-wook Park a step closer to adoration by me, after the Vengeance Trilogy...
Quite a leap from directing a famous trilogy focusing on the theme of revenge to a romantic comedy of sorts but Chan-wook Park pulls it off. Set in an asylum, the film focuses on Young-goon, who believes she's a cyborg and Il-soon, who believes he can steal personality traits and skills off his inmates. When Youn-goon beomes ill due to her lack of eating (cyborgs need electricity as power), Il-soon tries to help her back on her feet. It truly is a wonderful film, the other cast members are just as crazy including a man who will only walk backwards and the film has some great comedic moments. This is definetely a director worth watching out for.
Chan-Wook's latest feature is a definite U-turn from his revenge trilogy as it chronicles a young Korean girl's psychosis as a cyborg. Should be approached as a dramedy rather than a straight whimsical comedy, "Cyborg" seems familiar as it derives its fantasy from Gondry's "The Science of Sleep" version A and its darker side of version B. No doubt, it's pretty hard to get into but once the obligatory character introductions are set aside, rewards are acquired as the movie finally focuses on the main protagonists. Supporting characters are admirably quirky but sometimes feel forced, only necessary to label the movie quirky for quirkiness sake and lift the movie's running time to more than 2 hours. The movie impresses as it forces empathy to the main protagonists by allowing the audience to see things through their perspective, only to be grounded to 'reality' by non-patients. It's sometimes an interesting exercise, but can be distracting because as the film verges on to metaphorical wonder, it slings the tone right back to reality. Even though bloated and not on par with his best work, "Cyborg" rewards in emotion and fantasy. Music, set pieces and directing has the director's trademarks. Fans won't be disappointed.
This movie is completely insane, but in a very cute way. The film shines in all the characters of the various patients in the hospital. Each have their own form of mental illness and contribute something to the overall atmosphere of the hospital. The music is beautiful as it is in most of Park's films and the acting is top notch. As Young-goon continues to refuse to eat the situation becomes more and more desperate and Il-soon's growing compassion towards her brings the movie into one of the oddest yet cutest romantic couples I have ever seen on film. It's a very clever film and something that is far from what Park has usually done, yet still retains his signature directing/writing style. Hard to find a copy of but definitely worth watching.
Love the movie and really love the title. Very funny comedy from the man behind the Sympathy series. Full of odd humor and quirky ideas that's hard not to like.
After JSA, the Vengeance Trilogy was a bit of a yawner for me. This restored my faith in Park Chan-wook. Funny. Surreal.
This movie will touch you. It has a sweet, tender and delicate way to present its character, that you quickly fall in love with them. For sure it's different to most movies you watched before, it's absurd yet wonderful.
omg thats awesome it sounds so much like me i think i'm a robot a lot of times and liek my bf feels like he is fading away with his personality ^^
This comedy is really touching. I fell in love with the characters who are portrayed by great actors and actresses, which make them look so real. I'm a fan of Chan Wook-Park and i'm happy to see that he can makes comedies as well as dramas. If you love bizarre and dark humor, this picture is for you.
loved it !
chan wook park takes a breather after the vengeance trilogy and comes up with a wonderfully kooky love story, with a couple of dream sequences that make gondry look pretty darn normal!
you'll never find a romcom like this in hollywood.
This looks like a wonderful movie, and a million miles away from Chan-Wook Parks vengeance trilogy. Such a kooky plot too, there should be more kooky movies..
I you manage to get into the soureal situation of the whole film you'll love it!!
This is a hymn to love!! And one of the most interesting ones I have ever seen!
Chan-wook Park heads in a totally different direction. For me, the highlights of the film are Park's visuals. It's such a full movie, it might take another viewing for me to catch everything going on in the background. Romantic-comedy with bodies dropping. I found it very enjoyable. It's not a revenge flick, but that's o.k.
Chan-Wook Park does a dramatic change of pace with this quirky romantic comedy. Touching and hilarious.
I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK (2006)
director: Chan-wook Park
starring: Su-jeong Lim, Rain, Hie-jin Choi, Yong-nyeo Lee, Dal-su Oh
LOVE this film. It's probably one of the craziest films I have ever seen and one of the most original in terms of story and style. Director Chan-wook Park (one of my favourites) has already established himself as a filmmaker and has reached fame outside of Korea with his previous Vengeance Trilogy (Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance). His style is still somewhat evident and the themes displayed in his previous works are also there in part. But as a whole, this is a complete change for Park as he is not working in his known genre. The funny thing is, I didn't even question myself as I was watching this. I was so captivated by the film and the visuals that my worries of Park completely bombing weren't even an issue anymore. I might have been expecting a few hammers to the head and blood, blood, blood... but not seeing it like in Oldboy wasn't as big of a deal as I thought it would be. Park tackled this project and made it his own as if he's been making these types of films forever. He's magical, I tell you.
The premise of this film is strange (as if you didn't laugh a little when you read the title), but don't let that turn you away from this fantastic Park film. A young girl, Young-goon (played by Su-jeong Lim), is sent to a mental hospital where she meets many different psychotic people, one of them being Il-sun. Il-sun believes that he can steal people's souls and hops around the hospital like a rabbit all day. Oh, and did I mention that Young-goon believes she is a cyborg? Growing up with her grandmother, Young-goon watched her live her life believing she was a mouse. Eating only pickled radishes, her grandmother was eventually taken away and sent to a hospital. Young-goon keeps her grandmother's dentures and wears them so she can be closer to her. Dreaming of her often, she explains to Young-goon her purpose in life. The problem is, "your purpose in life is..." is as far as she gets. In every dream, her grandmother vanishes before she can finish her sentence. On her adventures, she encounters many different people and many problems occur, but with the help of Il-sun, who she eventually falls for, she accomplishes many things.
This film is just way too fun and had me smiling throughout the whole thing. Both Su-jeong Lim and Rain are a treat to watch and together they are absolutely mesmerizing. The scene in the forest where Young-goon spins her head around and her feet sprout rockets so she can boost up to kiss Il-sun is one of my favourite parts in this film. So many scenes in this film are hilarious, sad and romantic that it gives a sympathetic tenderness to both the lead characters. Watching Young-goon go from depressed to ecstatic was so exciting, especially in the scene where Il-sun gives her one patient's "flying socks" and sings to her that yodeling song as she dreams of gliding through the clouds. Absolutely magical.
If you're a fan of Chan-wook Park, I believe that you will still find it in yourself to love this film because you will notice similarities between this and his previous work. Even when the opening credits were rolling through the gears of the factory, I could tell this was going to be a great Park film. This film is incomparable to Oldboy, yet on some level, more fascinating. I love Oldboy and it will remain my favourite Chan-wook Park film for now, but this is Park's most creative masterpiece yet. I have only praises to say about this film, so I recommend this highly. If you're a fan of Asian cinema, enjoy. If you're a fan of Chan-wook Park (which I would assume makes you a fan of Asian cinema, also), enjoy. Even if you're just a fan of crazy and visually jaw-dropping films, watch this. It's a heartwarming, silly, romantic and ultimately brilliant achievement from one of the best Asian directors of today.
I'll need to rewatch this one, with the kinda goofy subtitles I have going on w/ my bootleg copy...
Very well done, great visuals and great characterizations of the patients in the mental hosptial, CGI was really tastefully done!
I can only give the film 4 stars though...good, but I was hoping it would be a 4 1/2 to 5 star movie based on Chan-Wook's other movies...something was missing in the script...
(and actually I was reading that there is an alternate ending, which tacks on an additional scene at the end, that provides better closure, not sure why it was left out...as I think this would've elevated my liking the film that extra 1/2 star)
This changed my perception towards Rain (in fact, I love this Rain rather than the real gyrating Rain). Beautifully presented.
one of the most adorable and hilarious movies ever! quirky and bizarre but definitely worth it =^.^=
I didn't expect much when I started watching it, as the synopsis is a bit weird. But it had two of my favourite Korean actors, Lim Su Jeong and Bi, so I could only watch it.
I don't regret it one bit! Yes it's weird and not much makes sence but it's a touching story and a very interesting movie.
Definitely a movie I'll be rewatching :3
can't believe the same person did 'oldboy' which was lacking something big in my opinion. this is an absolutely brilliant film...
