A strange Horror with a weak storyline. Virginte Ledoyen (The Beach) seems a natural Actress and the film to me seemed a bit of a down graded movie for her to take on. Nothing much happens in the first 50 mins of the film and everything after (or at least, what I could concentr...( read more)ate on) showed nothing much of an explanation.

    It lacked suspense and purpose

I liked this movie a helluva lot more than most reviewers.

The only thing to this film's detriment is that its plots elements do NOT resolve themselves, which can easily leave a viewer feeling cheated. It's one thing to be subtle and give answers without being obvious, it is an...( read more)other to never give any answers but instead pile on more questions. This film does the latter, leaving an unresolvable mess of a plot in its wake. The ambiguity would be acceptable if it fit with the mode of the film, or if the details added up under careful scrutiny, but it doesn't.

The cinematography is beautiful, and I thought this was one of the most atmospheric ghost movies I've ever seen in color film. I was intrigued and chilled by many moments in the movie, which is tough to do to a seasoned student of horror genre. I thought the sets were amazing - true stunners of art design and lighting. The visual language in the film has a lingering creepiness that even revisits me if I just think on the movie.

SPOILERS: I disagree with many viewers who peg the film as a psychological thriller, and insist that it is very much a Gothic ghost story.

This tried so hard to be a French version of "The Others" that I almost expected Eric Sykes to join the Hattie Jacques-lookalike Russian school matron. It's beautiful shot but it should have been dubbed or subtitled. Allowing the original actors to use their own 'Allo, 'Allo styl...( read more)e accents made the dialogue incomprehensible at times, and at those times when it was the most important.
Aside from the laconic dialogue, there are also very few bits of plot development that make any sense. The lead character is at first terrified of the "Scary Children" and then seems hell bent on summoning them for no reason at all. Similarly to "Creep", there are lots of clues to explain why things are as they are but nothing is fully explained. The conclusion just leaves the audience wondering what the hell they just watched. What was the point? Were any moral purposes served? Did any characters get what they deserved? What the hell was it about? I'm sure the director could put all those answers on the back of a postage stamp.

A very moody, atmospheric and quite spooky movie. This one is a classic. The acting treads right on the edge of excess without a misstep that could have made it hoaky. At first, the ending seems confusing and ambiguous. But if you think about it and payed close attention during ...( read more)the film, then all the clues are there to make the meaning of it all clear. The one point of which I remain uncertain is who really did drown the kittens and why?

The director treats the film as a book up until the uninteresting hard-to-understand ending. All throughout the action and "creepiness" remains at an almost boring low. I'm just glad he moved on to extreme cinema with Martyrs.

didn't do much for me. a few creepy moments but i failed to find the purpose in the premise.

Awful. It's a Del Toro wanna be, failing misserably.

Not only did this movie lack everything to make it even remotely interesting, it also casted (like most horrors may i add!) an annoying actress that is as engaging to watch as a stone! The film is slow, leaves you confused at the end as it does not answer any of the questions its...( read more) created, isn't scary in the slightess and ironic as its called "House of voices" (in the UK) and theres hardly any dialog let alone some scary children whispering which if they did add that could of set a better scene!!

Wow this movie has either lost of the meaning of a 'movie' or they didnt try to make this a decent enough movie, either way i was losing the will to live with this boring, slow and so uneventful horror ive ever seen this movie lacked everything there were no good storyline , ther...( read more)e was no scary moments no jumpy parts, there was no suspense and just drag on this is probably the most boring movie ive ever seen and it left you confused and bewilded with the ending that was just as rubbish as the rest of the movie!
Not worth a watch at all!!
