Kiyoshi Kurosawa is a master of minimalist horror. Like Kairo the audience has to do much of the work. We are supplied with a film that looks beautiful and on the surface has a very simple plot. As the story progresses all is not so simple and we are drawn into a more surreal and...( read more) supernatural world. Despite this, Sakebi never loses it's grip on reality. The locations are sparse, industrial areas which still look heart achingly wonderful on film. The mystery slowly sucks you in but not all answers are handed to you in some 20 minute exposition speech. Kiyoshi Kurosawa also knows how not to use sound, omitting those screechy and sudden sound effects found in usual horrors. His shots are also composed in order for us to search them ourselves. Ghostly characters lurk in the background without any sound cue. Characters don't notice them until long after we have. Simple and very effective.

It begins with such promise, and yet Retribution mysteriously decides about halfway through that it will completely scrap the great premise it began with and instead become a completely by-the-numbers onryo ghost story. This wouldn't be such a problem if the banshee in question ...( read more)wasn't totally non-threatening, appearing as a completely normal woman who can hold intelligent conversation and comes in and out of your apartment through the front door. The last few twists to try and save the film make absolutely no sense, and the few scares are more funny in their sheer absurdity than they are frightening. Disappointing.

    Great. Just great.

Meh. Considering the director's past works, it fails to impress or scare. It's more of a slow-paced crime drama than a horror flick. As a mystery, it succeeds. The serpentine plot involving a cop accused of murder by the victim of said murder kept my interest. But the many appear...( read more)ances of the ghost (who was more of a monologuing banshee than your typical J-horror Onryo) in this movie made me laugh more than give me chills, and the ending left me more confused than satisfied.

Great ghost story that has some really chilling moments. Despite some scenes leaving the audience scratching their heads, that is pretty much expected from Kurosawa. Not his best film, but very good indeed.

This movie creeped me out; that fact alone makes this film a rare gem. I've seen a few other Kurosawa in the past but don't remember them being this gripping. I will most definitely have to go back and find them again. I wanted to watch rewatch Sakebi immediately after it con...( read more)cluded which is a high praise and a abnormal impulse for me.

6/10 I have a very love/hate relationship with the director "Kiyoshi Kurosawa". He has great ideas, he is good at what he does, and he can really draw you in. However, there is always something "out of whack" in his films that messes the whole film up. The film"Cure" is a good e...( read more)xample. Its a great film, a VERY cool idea, and I loved seeing each poor soul that got hit with the "cure". BUT....The villain just could not carry the film, and it knocked the whole film out of wack. Now back to this film. I had to watch this film two times to make it to the end. The first time I got bout 35 min. into the film and it was SOO heavy handed I just had to stop. Not willing to give up on the film I tryed a 2nd time to give the film a fair shake (some films really do change on the second half). About 45 min. into the film the story started to pick up and was really drawn into it. It did really well till I got to the end. Then I kinda had to go "Huh?". I liked the twist mind you, but he should have stoped there. I had to think for a bit on what really was the problem with this film. At first thought the film was just muddled across the board. I decided later though that really was not it. I think now what it is is that "Kiyoshi Kurosawa" got a case of the Ring/Grudge bug and tryed to make that kinda film. He also dint want to make another "clone" so he was going to do his style of film instead. That is were he went wrong. Rather then do a blend of the two styles he kept jumping back and forth with them. Its like he really could not decide what he really wanted to do. So instead of one film , it was more two halfs of a film put together to make one film. So all and all. Good film.....BUT,,,

The silliest movie one could ever wish for, it makes "The Ring" look like a comedy.

When kurosawa is good he is very good, when he is medicre, he can be very mediocre.

I can't put my finger on it's flaws though. It clearly has them, but looking back...all I can say is it's devoid of the chills and the creepy atmosphere that accompanies most of kurosawa's oth...( read more)er works, and the concept of the ghost (not neccesarily it's motive, but it's visual concept) was very weak...and in some scenes unintentionally funny.

I'm a bit apprehensive about loft now...

A little confusing, but effectively creepy.
