Samurai Soy was made during the cold war and reflects both the paranoia and uncertainty of the time. It's a tale of spies being caught between sides. Having the appearance of being on one side, whilst fighting for the other, causes a lot of conflict and grief for the warriors. Perhaps the audience was supposed to be as confused as the spies, but it doesn't help so much when telling a story. Unlike the majority of samurai films, we get to see some awesome stealthy ninja action and throwing star carnage. The immense leaps and jumping made for a wealth of excitement. There were also some fantastic long shots which just aren't used for action sequences these days.

After watching and thoroughly enjoying the noir-like look at the under belly of Japan and the yakuza in Pale Flower, I was excited to see Masahiro Shinoda's Samurai Spy! I wasn't disappointed in the slightest as it was an action packed and beautifully filmed samurai film. The story is meant to throw a lot of information and disorienting techniques to keep the viewer on edge and questioning what's coming next. This combined with multiple clans and their spies battling for information and control makes it a great and exciting film that you simply can't take your eyes off of. The use of black and white and using light and shadow to its full extent makes it a super atmospheric samurai film that is dark and moody as well. Highly Recommended for anyone who loves samurai films!

A fun samurai movie, part of Criterion?s Rebel Samurai boxed set, but probably my least favorite of the three films in the set I?ve seen. The story is convoluted and hard to follow, but part of that may have been I wasn?t paying particularly close attention. The Black and White cinematography was really good. There were some very well choreographed fights, but they weren?t as good as many other samurai movies from the era. Fun movie, just not as good as its peers.
