Martial arts legend Jackie Chan stars as Jack, a world-renowned archaeologits who has begun having mysterious dreams of a past life as a warrior in ancient China. When a fellow scientist asks for Jack's help in locating the mausoleum of China's first emperor, the past collides violently with the present as Jack discovers his amazing visions are based in fact. Assisted by the spirit of a noble princess, Jack follows a mystical trail that soon finds him battling the forces of the legendary emepror, as well as the henchmen of a modern-day tomb raider, as he seeks to uncover histor's greatest secret - and his own destiny.

Just say I must be out of my mind but I simply like The Myth. Not to mention the poor special effects and visualization, i think this is one nice Eastern movie. Let's not being skeptical or extremely comparing it to Zhang Zi Yi's Memoirs of Geisha. I believe it is a big responsibility to convert great plots on screen. What I meant great is the present and history blend, progressively told side by side, also supported by great scores. They somewhat failed to materialize what they aimed at the first place, it still enjoyable and an OK time-killing romantic movie.

I saw this movie accidentally , because my local tv channel played it and it was A thing .

    After minute:
Jackie Chan's best serious movie with a mixture of past and nowdays , this movie has a goof educational history and a nice sci-fi coverage with a little kung-fu and fanservicesSynopsis :

    The review

    The story :
Mixture of sci-fi and history made this movie to be extraordinary made in China movie . The story contained cliche love story and a bit' confusing plot which gives this movie another minuses . Especially when the princess danced in front of the emperor , the score was great but the move and the windy things annoyed it all .

    Cinematography and directing :
Simple and ordinary , it's really average if you compare to Hollywood one .

    The score :
The best of all , but the magnificent score wasn't supported well by the directing neither the cinematography and the setting ,actually this movie has a quite bad visualization and bad special effect which not even 10 times better than Indosiar's tv effect.
    Flixster - Share Movies

    The casting :
Jackie Chan as Jack a.k.a. the emperor . His role as serious person is half-way to good , we all know him as a comedian actor but this role is surely a hard role for him.

Hee Soon Kim is a damsel in distress princess Ok-soo with bad acting and cliche emotions , she's only a pretty face in the movie.

Tony Leung Ka Fai as William is simply talentless and so ordinary .

Malika Sherawaat as Shamanta is not even helping , she showed up a lot of skin and did the martial arts , she's only beautiful talentless people on the screen.

The other casts are nice supporters .

    The Setting :
From Modern China to old China to India , a creative setting with clean serving.

    Overall :
It's ok to watch because it will not make you bored to hell , maybe it's cliche and low-quality but this movie is ok.

Besides some of the cheesy cgi that looks fake, and the over saturation that almost makes the real fire look fake; and the always present lack of resolution in Chinese cinema, it was a fabulously wonderful movie. I will definitely buy this DVD for my collection of favorites!

usuallly this movies turn out to be not very good, but this movie was on eof the best jackie chan movies i have seen in a while..the action scenes were very cool in which jackie incorparted more of his weapon fighting and the storyline worked out so perfect. i liked how the two stories were intertwined with each other and how jackine played an indiana jones-like character, and also played an ancient chinese general. the movie reminded me of an indiana jones meets ancient chinese warlords. the ending was very sad but was close to perfect. the ending city scene was also very well thought of and designed..movie was alot like the new forbidden kingdom that jackie chan and jet li just came out with..a must see.

One of the highlights of 2004 was 'New Police Story', Jackie Chan's attempt to ingratiate himself with the Hong Kong public after alienating them with his Hollywood misadventure. 'The Myth' is a further attempt to rekindle the popularity he once enjoyed in Asia and banish memories of his supposed sell-out to the ether.
Archaeologist Jack (Chan) is devoted to uncovering lost relics from around the world. His close friend and physicist William (Leung) pitches an interesting venture to Jack; to uncover the truth about a fabled act of levitation produced by an Indian mystic. William is keen to point out the archaeological value in such findings, but clearly has hidden motives for his studies and steals an ancient artefact to discover more. While Jack is implicated in the maelstrom created by William's actions, he is also pre-occupied by increasingly vivid dreams he is having about being a general in ancient China. These intense images trouble him every night as does the discovery of a portrait of the Korean princess that haunts his sleep. As Jack pieces together his supposed past and his present, he starts to move closer to a significant discovery that promises to answer all of his questions.
If you were to fuse together 'Armour Of God III' and a slice of Zhang Yimou's arthouse swordplay style, you would come close to 'The Myth'. An uncomfortable puzzle that struggles to reconcile two such fundamentally disparate stories, 'The Myth' is a mixture of the not so sublime and the not too ridiculous, a production that is soaked in money but lacking in real direction. That said though, there's some stark reminders of what we'll all miss when Jackie does finally retire from these kind of films.
In a cinematic world dominated by computer effects (something also true of this production), it's always life-affirming to see a little bit of Jackie magic up on the screen. The man who was once called the 'human computer effect' features in two brief, yet enchanting action scenes; the first sees him take on a horde of spear-wielding guards in a mausoleum, while the second is a dexterous escapade in a rat glue factory - who else could take such unusual locations and construct such free-flowing action within them? These two moments on their own are worth the price of admission - as the saying goes - and prove to be a far more pleasing aspect of the film than all of the CGI effects that feature prominently throughout. Both action sequences are obviously shoe-horned into the narrative to allow Chan to roll back the years, but any opportunity to see him turning on the style again after his years in the Hollywood wilderness is most welcome.
While the 'The Myth' revels in its opulent production values, solid computer effects and the aforementioned Jackie tussles, it struggles to balance both storylines and chooses to generate an uneasy hybrid from the elements. Just as the viewer is being drawn into the historical story, the focus switches to the modern day adventures of Jack and his quest to uncover the meaning of his dreams. What is so frustrating about this is that our star has long promised us a real 'Armour Of God III' and here tantalises us with what could be, only to then revert back to the ancient setting. Not that either of the storylines really gain superiority, but that two such promising ideas are forced together is an unfortunate side-effect of trying to please everyone.
Despite the difficult construction of the main narrative, Stanley Tong can be commended for helping maintain a solid, if unremarkable pace. There are few slow moments here - quite an achievement for a two hour action film - though at the same time the actual tension created by Jack's quest for truth is underwhelming. The aspects of sci-fi that are momentarily brought into the main story do little to benefit the already messy mixture and the denouement is disappointing for a star whose incredible ingenuity over the years has been so precious. What does work is the exotic locations, the sumptuous design and the international flavour that is only recently appreciated by Hong Kong productions. Such a refreshing air papers over the obvious cracks and the adventure seem more absorbing than it initially appears.
'The Myth' gives Jackie Chan the opportunity to play two very different characters; Jack is the archetypal role that we've seen Chan take for years, while his ancient incarnation appears to be the direction that he would like to take in the future. The former persona is typically assured with the star's effortless charm acting as a constant reminder of his on-screen strengths. The latter, however, proves problematic. General Meng Yi is a character who is never extended beyond the parameters of honourable soldier, his turmoil over the love he has for Ok Soo is never fleshed out or developed enough to strike the necessary emotional balance. Jackie performs the job admirably, but the fractured nature of the storyline means that the more challenging of the two roles is given little breathing space. The more stately narrative is also prone to a few too many Jackie-isms - fine for us old-time fans, but hardly conducive to making Meng Yi are 'serious' character. People flying on wires is one thing, but horse kung-fu is stretching things a bit.
At times frustrating and yet mostly entertaining, 'The Myth' may not be vintage Chan, but there are glimpses here of a performer who is still a valuable treasure for world cinema. Whether he's interacting with his beautiful co-stars or engaging in some furious action, Jackie Chan produces a work that relies on the warm persona of its star and only struggles when it strays away from this. If only the two conflicting elements of the film could have been devoted to two separate productions, there may have been even more to cheer about. As it stands though, this continues the rejuvenation started in 'New Police Story' despite the obvious flaws.

A mixture of real cool and real flawed scenes. It seems like a collection of producer's ideas on what would be good in a movie, and that's about it. I started out really digging the Qin story as well as present-day stuff (and I like it when movies explain historical mysteries and legends). There is a traditional Jackie action scene near the beginning that is truly awesome and another pretty sweet one in the middle. Then as the movie went on I realized it was losing me. There were some bad fight scenes too. Too much felt forced and fake. The FX were very unwelcome because every FX shot you saw you could tell it was an FX shot. Didn't look right, which is doubly bad. By the end I realized the movie was trying to be emotional but I was devoid of emotional reaction of any kind watching the movie. The zero-g stuff at the end was sweet to watch though.

I really liked this movie. It is one that was done in Chinese. However, if you watch it on DVD there is an English over-dub you can watch it with. It has a lot of historical and supernatural elements that were right up my alley. Then, again, I just like Jackie Chan.

The fight scenes were spectacular, the photography and soundtrack were beautiful. Jackie and the rest of the cast acted suberbly.
The story was going so well...to reach an end so STUPID!!!! I understand that all endings can't be happy ones, but the story's ending was completely idiotic. The Princess recognized Jack as the General of the Chi'in army she loved. Jack had proof time and again that he was the reincarnation of the General. He had his memories, for goodness sake!!! She could have stayed with Jack even if she was immortal and he wasn't. That is a semi-happy ending, and a more logical conclusion to the story.

Yet another example of why Jackie Chan is a better actor when directed by some one from his own culture. Part Zhang Yimou epic, part Indiana Jones spoof, The Myth is another addition to the list of Asian films intending to promote a spiritual connection between Asians and their roots through the use of high tech visual effects. Much like Ten Shunimura's Shinobi, much of the action is spectacular if not a little ridiculous (How can Chan single handedly stop a carraige from rolling off the side of a cliff?) but overall director Stanley Tong does a more than adequate job. Jackie Chan, when asked to be serious, is far more appealling than the bumbling fool western audiences are used to and at times actually seems quite heroic. The biggest draw is the cinematograhy which is devoid of anything beyond old school filming techniques. Cinema editing has made massive advances in the field of colour grading over the past decade but is still largely unable to compete with the tried and tested formula of lighting, framing and composition. Unfortunately, whilst the historical scenes are largely faultless, the scenes set in present day are yawnworthy. True, Mallika Sherawat manages to prove that Indian women can be very sexy but largely this half of the film feels more like a Western Chan chopsocky comedy with a 'Science Vs. Faith' sub-story to offer it some weight. In conclusion, whilst The Myth may offer some briefly exotic entertainment on a rainy day, it will fail to impress fans of Bruce Lee or those have seen far superior Wushu action such as Hero or Fearless.

I don't feel like I have much of a grasp on this movie, since we watched it in Chinese with subtitles on... but I got most of it, and it was good. I didn't like the result in the end. Seemed kinda... unnatural, maybe? I don't know. Not predictable, but not very satisfying ending. Still, a good movie.

Well, in three words it was.... AMAZING, AWESOME, and SUPER COOL!!!

It had a little more sensuality, innuendo, and implied nudity than I would've liked... and the violence was ALMOST too intense for a PG-13. So I wouldn't recommend it to all my friends, but it was still a really awesome action movie and classic Jackie Chan fanfare.

I'm not sure what Tony Leung is doing in this movie. I'm not sure about Jackie Chan in any sort of love story. It looks cheap and the plot is... weird (anti-gravity meteors in ancient China?). But it's a fun movie if you are amused by Jackie Chan and don't need to take your martial arts movies seriously.

this could have been a great movie, the the correct cast.. jackie chan is a good comediant, but his dramatic skills aren't that good. the same thing applys to the rest of the cast.
This is a movie made for Jet Li, for examplo.
Nevertheless, it's a cool movie to see.
