this is probably kurosawa's most average film. granted, kurosawa's average is better than anyone else's, and this is still a very good story with great camera shots, but it sort of stalls a bit at the end. solid viewing and a decent addition to the story of saam chee.

In this government-suggested sequel, Sugata again grows as a judo master, and demonstrates his (and by extension, all Japanese) superiority to the foreign warrior.

This sequel manages to fall into a few cliches, but still maintains interest through its characters and Kurosawa's visual style. However, it is not necessarily a high point in the director's career.

The sequel lacks the originals substance. Nevertheless, it remains entertaining. One could argue that this is the only time Kurosawa sold out. He never wanted to make the film but the pressures of cashing in on the original's success was too high at this early stage of his career...( read more)
