The film opens by developing a contrast between Tukaram, a pious but poor devotee and preacher, and Salomalo, the wealthy but spiritually bankrupt Brahmin priest. Tukaram's piety, however, has a downside, as his poor wife must solely fend for the family as Tukaram's head is too often in the clouds. The force of necessity proves too strong, and Tukaram decides he must take responsibility for his family. He gets a job as a farmhand and sings his marvelous songs to the crops. They grow at an unheard of rate. Jealous, Salomalo has the crops destroyed, but Tukaram performs a miracle and the crops immediately grow back. Tukaram proceeds to effect a series of miracles and becomes the prophet of the poor -- a process that dramatizes a very real shift in religious power that occurred in his lifetime. The film ends as a chariot descends from heaven to bring Tukaram to the gods. All the songs in the film are either adaptations or original compositions by Tukaram. ~ Brian Whitener, Rovi
