Jesus is Magic is full of recycled jokes from her TV series. Her humor is racist and crude. That is why I like her. But it would have been nice to hear some original material.
I'm usually a sucker for standup, but this was just awful. Her stand-up is mediocre at best, but the little bits that she put in between the stand-up sealed the deal for me.
one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Sarah Silverman is the most ground-breaking comedian in recent history, refusing to edit herself and exposing the prejudice still present in our society. you've got to see this movie before you die.
I didn't realize that I had already watched this movie several times over via youtube clips!! haha It's kind of hard to grade, because as an actual movie, it's really bad. Horribly put together and I'd say 80 or 85% of it is her doing standup. But that is a good thing, in my opinion, since stand up is her strong point. That and the improv, real life stuff (make sure you watch the Making Of featurette). Her skits and songs almost uniformly suck. Like, "Sarah, you actually thought that was funny?" sucky. But her delivery of her act is uniquely her own. She adopts an amusing pseudo-conceited persona and obsessed with everything taboo. She also has a knack for attackting celebrities, which unfortunately she doesn't use here. (see: Independent Spirit Awards and MTV movie Awards). So while this is technically not a good film, if we're talkin ability to make me laugh, it's an easy 4 stars.
Saw the special on cable... TERRIBLE!!! I've always thought Sarah Silverman was funny and I was incredibly excited to see this. I watched it with a friend of mine and we're just looking at each other going "what the hell was that? was that funny to YOU?"
Not bad, although she really doesn't do much more than play her horrible-person character. Still, the jokes hit a lot and she's sort of compelling to watch just because you wouldn't expect such an act from a moderately attractive Jewish girl. The segments that weren't stand-up were kind of lame, though.
holy hell is this some funny stuff. she says things that i would never even DREAM of saying, let alone to the world!!!!!! i love your filthy mouth sarah!!!!
This movie is insanely quotable Sarah Silverman is a genius and she has fanatastic comic timing! I can watch this movie a thousand times and still get something new from it!
The comedy sequences were funny in that really inappropriate way, which is Silverman's schtick. The musical numbers were really annoying. What it comes down to is you either really like Sarah Silverman or you hate her guts. If you hate her, don't bother.
Normally I find Sarah Silverman to be fucking hilarious. I'd also normally be one for random musical numbers. Therefore, one would come to the conclusion that this movie would be awesome, in my eyes.
It just wasn't all that funny. Plain and simple. It was decent enough, but I never really laughed out loud at any particular point. And most of the songs just weren't all that great. I found the behind the scenes footage more interesting.
The Opinion: I'm disappointed actually. I expected more.
I've liked Sarah Silverman's roasts, but this was not funny at all. One of the guys and I put this in after work one night....seriously, neither of us laughed once.
She's pretty funny, but this is not good. It reeks of some "art" thing. What ever she was trying didn't work. Maybe she didn't have 60 minutes of material?
Sarah Silverman is one of the only female camics that i can stand. I think she's incredibly funny, and beyond beautiful. This movie is really hilarious and one of the best stand up concert films /skit movies i've ever seen.
I'm judging this first and foremost on the material. 90% of the film is a (well shot) concert film of Silverman's best routines over the past decade. It's brilliantly funny, she's amazing, end of. Three of her songs have been given a music video makeover which visually I wasn't too keen on but the songs themselves are great. The Odenkirk cutaway sketch and the framing stuff is on the whole pretty cack & unnecessary & I await the commentary track to discover the reasoning behind it.
If you only know her from her (shoddy) bit parts in films you owe it to yourself to check this out.
There is something charming about Sarah Silverman. She is interesting to watch. The movie was funny but I didn't really think it was anything super special. the musical numbers were one of the best parts, though! I liked the "You're gonna die soon" one a lot. Some funny jokes in there but it didn't feel like anything to get worked up about.
