    Spielberg's take on World War 2, or wars in general if you will, is the ultimate film on the topic. There are a few minor stereotypes, especially when it comes to the Germans, but Spielberg leaves no doubt that everyone loses in war, and everyone is playing dirty, some more than ...( read more)others. The first 20 minutes of the flashback, the landing at the Normandy on D-Day, are so stunningly brutal, true and disturbing, they could be watched as a stand alone, maybe even should be taught at school. After that, the movie goes into a slightly more conventional direction, but never the less sticks to its theme: life is too precious to be wasted in territorial conflicts. The characters are introduced on the way and soon after you pray for each of them to make it out of this mess, although you already fear very few will. Neither cowardice nor heroism make you more or less likely to be among the winners or casualties, war is random. The acting is superb, so is the camera work, the direction, William's soundtrack. The showdown blows you away and leaves you deeply moved. The most touching scene of the film doesn't even happen on the battlefield. When mum Ryan sees a car approaching her farm, with a priest and a general getting out of it, knowing what news they are bringing, it's hard to keep your eyes dry. A lot of people mention Kubrick or Coppola as those who grasped the theme of war best, but coming from a place where it all happened, where its history is written in every stone, this film feels like the ultimate testament. A masterpiece, and once again proof that Spielberg is the greatest film maker of our time.

    After an amazing start this film went rapidly downhill. It's a stupid story and a is little contrived. Brilliantly shot, with a brilliant cast, just rubbish writing! Ridiculously overhyped.

    Spielberg wastes no time with the most unforgettable realistic and brutal opening scene of all time when the troops land at the beach and thousands are unsuspectingly mowed down by machine gun fire. Widely considered the most graphic, and the best war scene in cinematic history, it is relentless and unnerving.

    The cinematography was great and the screenplay was brilliant. SPR also boasts one of the most star-studded casts of all time that includes Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Giovanni Ribsi, Dennis Farina, Paul Giamatti, Tom Sizemore, Ed Burns, Ted Danson, and Nathan Fillion (Serenity). With the exception of Hanks, Barry Pepper delivered the greatest performance as the heroic, sharp-shooting sniper of the squad. This film also introduced Vin Diesel to the world.

    Spielberg rightfully won an Oscar for Best Director, and the film itself was snubbed for Best Picture by, of all films, Shakespeare in Love. Don't miss Spielberg's heart-breaking masterpiece about the valor of men and war.

All of Capt Miller's gang are from different backgrounds, ethnicities, religion. Portrayed as genuine heroes. The German's are once again portrayed as evil subhumans, who know nothing about warfare tactics and deserve nothing more than a bullet.

    The plot is a bit farfetched and typically sentimental as most of Spielberg's films. Nevertheless, "Saving Private Ryan" is a very good war movie with some electrifying battle scenes. And yes, Spielberg did it. It is actually touching.

    What Patriot did for the revolutionary war I believe this did for WW2 amazing cinematography great story the bond these men share in combat is amazing

    As far as a war film is concerned this is the best I've seen. It seems to be as realistic as a movie can make war seem even though it is nothing like the real thing. Intense battle scenes and Spielberg depicted graphic death scenes as well. A must see for any war film fan or movi...( read more)e buff.

    The start makes me cringe, yes Spielberg want to show us how 'real' war can looks like, but it feels forced. but, after half an hour then you can know why this movie get four and half star in my book.

    Speilberg is a genius director who knows his script, directing and tra...( read more)demark. the 'reality' of war is always horrid and painful, with endless torture and sacrifices from soldiers. great concept between the actors makes it seems alive and don't forget excellent set, background music, cinematography, explosion, action, dialogue and emotion.

    I'm not arguing that this might be one of the best war movie. The star cast is talented, from Hanks, Burns to Damon or Davies and Goldberg.

    No need to explain more, memorable!

So we're in the dressing room, she's trying to squeeze into this side cut, silk ribbonned, triple panel girdle with the uh, shelf-lift brassiere and it's beautiful because she's just pouring outta this thing, you know? It's beautiful. And she sees me and she can tell I got a hard on the size of the statue of liberty, all right? And she says to me, "Richard, calm down." And she says, "Now when you're over there, if you see anything that upsets you, if you're ever scared, I want you to close your eyes and think of these. You understand?" So I said, "Yes, ma'am."
