Scared Stiff

Barbara Bates, Carmen Miranda, Dean Martin, Donna Reed, Dorothy Malone

This funny remake of Bob Hope's THE GHOST BREAKERS offers Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis as nightclub entertainers Larry Todd and Myron Myron Mertz, who escape from the clutches of mobsters in New York b...( read more  read more... )y fleeing to an island off the coast of Cuba. There, the boys come to the aid of heiress Mary Carrol (Lizabeth Scott) who's trying to claim a castle on the island that's been left to her as part of an inheritance. However, they must contend with a criminal who is set on scaring them away from the supposedly haunted isle. Among the film's comic high points are Jerry Lewis doing an imitation of costar Carmen Miranda (replete with platform shoes and fruit), and a surprise appearance by another popular comedy team during the film's final moments.

Several song and dance routines add to the fun. Carmen Miranda performs "Mamae Eu Quero," and duets with Martin and Lewis on "San Domingo," and "The Enchilada Man." Martin performs "I Don't Care If the Sun Don't Shine," "What Have You Done for Me Lately," and "When Someone Wonderful Thinks You're Wonderful."

How the hell would anyone think Jerry Lewis is funny? This is a terrible re-make of The Ghost Breakers. (And the original didn't have pointless singing in it.) The only funny parts are those directly copied from the original. Oh, now I know who Carmen Miranda is.

I had forgotten about this one. This was almost as good a spook comedy as anything by Abbott and Costello. Some really good sets, and an hilarious cameo homage to Bob Hope and Bing Crosby. I notice that in the days before air conditioning, nobody is portrayed as sweating in the Carribean, despite being dressed rather snuggly for the climate. Some great gags, however.

Lewis receives a lot of criticism. Often overlooked is the fact that he is a superb and accomplished physical comedian, which is as evident in this picture as any. I suppose that such things go largely unappreciated these days, when everyone is more interested in break dancing and learning how to "moon walk." The physical abilities of entertainers such as Harold Lloyd, Robin Williams, Jerry Lewis, even Patrick Swayze, are far more impressive.

BORED stiff... the first 2/3rds of the film is tedious. Fast forward until they get to the "haunted island" lol.

With an excellent cast like this, nothing can go wrong. It's funny and filled with great actors. Dean Martin is a favorite of mine...
