This is really a lame sports comedy. We've seen so many films like this now, especially with the 70's look going on, its extremely old and cliched. To make things worse this isnt even funny, only two occasions actually made me laugh, the rest of the time its just kinda dull.
All ...( read more)the characters, looks and ideas have been done before, Ferrell has played this same charcter afew times now and its getting boring. Harrelson has made much better with white men and Kingpin, the latter being a truely brilliant sports spoof of sorts.
This is just Talladega Nights with basketballs, the only impressive thing was Harrelsons wig.

I liked this movie more than I expected. It wasn't like a lot of movies, where three stars points to a let down, it's just a case where this is no Anchorman, and probably suffers as a result. A few of the scenarios in the film were more ridiculous than I could stand, and a few of...( read more) the scenes were too long and self-indulgent and by times - sorry Will, I still love you - unfunny. Enough big laughs, though, it could become a favourite "fun" movie. In passing, Woody Harrelson was good despite basically reprising his Roy Munson role from Kingpin, and Maura Tierney is still a poor man's Jennifer Aniston (not to mention a better actress).

Andre 3000 put a layer of funk over the movie that all the jive turkey arm shootings and mascara couldn't mask. I give him a star

Loved it despite the bad ratings.. If you are a Ferrell fan you should definitely enjoy this one. "Let's get Tropical!!"
  • October 11, 2008
I expected much more. Where are all the laughs?
  • November 3, 2009
As every other Ferrell movie it has excellent funny moments, it's simple and quite enjoyable
  • October 29, 2009
Not as great and funny as Tallageda or the blades of glory...or even step brother but it is okay...there are some funny parts to it also...so 2.5 is good enough...
  • October 24, 2009
Semi-amusing. Not in the same league as Anchorman, but the film has it's moments, just not that many. Thought the commentators were great but the love interest of Harrelson was there only to pad the film out.

Better then I expected it to be
  • October 1, 2009
What happens if you have a typical, brainless and retard American comedy and suddenly decide to throw in a Will Ferrell? It gets fun. It doesn't get better, it doesn't get any smarter, but it gets more fun. That's it. The most expected, obvious and non-surprising gags and jokes c...( read more)an be found in Semi-Pro.

Claudia Puig, USA Today

There are some ludicrous sight gags and uniquely silly, if foul-mouthed, laughs. The movie falters when it tries to be serious. Fortunately, those moments are few. full review

Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

The real problem lies in the character Ferrell is playing. Aside from the unimportant detail that there really were no former disco stars in 1976, the character is vague -- and specificity of characte... full review

Stephanie Zacharek, Salon.com

There isn't enough going on in Semi-Pro, comically or otherwise, to sustain the movie even through its first half-hour. This may be one of the most sluggish sports comedies ever made -- even the suppo... full review

Kyle Smith, New York Post

Semi-Pro goes up for the dunk and misses the hoop, the backboard and the point. Instead, it manages to both strike out and get sacked. Whose idea was it to remake Slap Shot a la Jerry Lewis? full review

February 29, 2008
Amy Biancolli, Houston Chronicle

It's long on shorts but short on punchlines. full review

February 29, 2008
Kurt Loder, MTV

Not even Ferrell, spinning his comic wheels here, can save this vapid flick. full review

February 28, 2008
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

Even when the script, by Scot Armstrong, shoots airballs, Ferrell is a slam-dunk. full review

February 28, 2008
Colin Covert, The Minneapolis Star Tribune

Erratic, overlong and repetitive, Semi-Pro seems not to have been written but sketched out in chalkboard diagrams before the actors took their marks in front of the cameras. full review

Kyle Smith, KyleSmithOnline.com

Goes up for the dunk but misses the rim, the backboard and the point. Instead it manages to strike out and get sacked at the same time. full review

Jackie Moon: "Everybody panic! Oh my God, there's a bear loose in the coliseum! There will be no refunds! Your refund will be escaping this deathtrap with your life! If you have a small child, use it as a shield! They love the tender meat! Cover your sodas! Dewie loves sugar!"

Totally waste of time and money, I don't recommend anyone see this, it's by far Farrell's worst movie. I've loved his work in the past, but this was just bad...
