Enjoyable if predictable tale of two men linked forever to the past. "Falls" short in the end.

"How'd you get that scar on your throat? Indians?
    - No worse. Mormons."

The first thing that came in mind, why I liked this movie was, that the two main characters aren't either good or bad. They're just men.

One is seeking vengeance and the other is trying live with the burden...( read more) of making a serious mistake.

The first half is very interesting, starting as a cat and mouse game and building up the tension between the two men.

The second half has an unusual ending, that bothered me for a while. But later on I realized that it's always nice to see an ending that differs from that what you've been waiting to happen.

The actors did a good job with the assistance of several good supporting actors.

The cinematography is stunning and the story is meant to make you think. Not much is revealed in the beginning.

Highly recommended to all fans of good Westerns.

A pretty decent western with a quality cast. It is very much a tracking a man on the run film, a very dangerous man as it happens. It is wonderfully shot to as the backdrop changes from the snowy mountains, forests, open plains and into the desert. It gets a little surreal in the...( read more) final third but still an interesting film.

I was amazed with Gideon's survival skills but otherwise, this was somewhat boring.

    Stunning Visuals. Very Poetic Western.

While superifically billed as a western, "Seraphim Falls" has the tone and structure of a mournful poem. On the surface it is little more than the story of a hunter, a former Civil War Colonel, and the hunted, a war criminal. As the film goes on, however, both men become so singl...( read more)emindedly driven so as to be mirror images of eachother, in essence hunting and running away from nothing more and nothing less than themselves. The film's final act, featuring the appearance of a Mephistophelean temptress who offers both men what they need to kill the other while taking from them what they would need to survive, capitalizes on some of the more surreal touches from the first two acts and elevates the movie to another level.

While not without its flaws (Gideon is at times borderline precognitive in his ability to set traps and escape, the flashback to the incident at Seraphim Falls, which links the two men and started the chase, is underwhelming and could very easily have been left out), the film features two very strong lead performances, some interesting supporting turns and exquisitely beautiful photography. While hated by most, I really enjoyed it.

    Slow.

    But worth it....

...but only if you like westerns.
This is a simple tale of revenge and obsession and thus, the plot is simple; one man is chasing the other.
What makes this good to some is alas what will make it bad for others.

It is true that both lead characters are p...( read more)erhaps a bit cliched and thus perhaps a bit "easy" but in this case, it helps us understand what is going on straight away. The film opens very abruptly with Carver shooting Gideon and then chase begins. They meet once and Gideon only asks once why Carver is doing this to which Carver gives a name of a place as his reason. That simple three line exchange is enough to tell us everything we need to know and it is that type of simplicity that makes this a good film. It is like an excercise in minimalism in film making. It takes everything uneccessary in telling this story and concerntrates on the important bit; the chase itself. Granted that not a lot happens but remember, not a lot does happen when you are chasing someone who is going at more or less the same speed as you.
But this isn;t without flaws as it isn't really a minimalist film. IT is a chase film when things happen in bursts. The moments of nothing are there to give the moments of action more effect but it really doesn't help that at times, when something does happen, it's a little unbelievable.

It also doesn't help that somewhere along the line, someone got cold feet and felt the need to complete the back story. The whole flashback of what happened in Seraphim Falls was a part that they really could've done without and in my mind, was a bit of a cop out as it even goes to semi absolve Gideon's guilt in the events. It would've been more interesting to simple have had the two men as being equals on opposite sides.

The final act also doesn't quite gel too well with the indian by the water and in turn, the lady in the desert suddenly appearing in the film in their alegorical majestic to offer profund insight to the two men.

    Worth it?
It was to me but the again, I liked Apaloosa and that is another slow film in which very little happens. It is also another western. That is probably enough to tell you all you need to know.
