After the long-delayed Town and Country, director Peter Chelsom turns in his second 2001 effort with this love-at-first-sight romantic comedy that revolves around fate, destiny, and chance. Jonathan (John Cusack) and Sara (Kate Beckinsale) are two New Yorkers already in relationships when they meet one another, each reaching for the last pair of cashmere gloves at a department store. Over coffee, they strike up an intimate conversation, and Jonathan thinks they should see each other again. Unconvinced, Sara arranges an elaborate series of "fate" games; if they're meant to be… More

Critic Reviews from Rotten Tomatoes

"A movie I found myself liking more than perhaps I should."
‑ Andrew Sarris, New York Observer
"So stringently a 'romantic comedy,' you could review it with a pie chart."
‑ Paul Tatara, CNN.com
"...so empty, so derivative"
‑ Philip Martin, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
"Serendipity director Peter Chelsom gives us charm instead of plot, romance instead of logic."
‑ Josh Gilchrist, Billings Outpost (Montana)
"In some ways, "Serendipity" could be the movie Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan forgot to make 10 years ago. Not since "Sleepless in Seattle" has there been so much onscreen discussion about soulmates and the mystical power of fate."
‑ James Sanford, Kalamazoo Gazette
"Fluffy and innocuous as Cool Whip, it is nonetheless uplifting, romantic and delightful, further enhancing the world's enduring love affair with the Big Apple."
‑ Rex Reed, New York Observer
"Lightweight romance may appeal to teens."
‑ Nell Minow, Common Sense Media
"A química entre Cusack e Beckinsale é eficaz - pena que, durante a maior parte do tempo, os dois sejam mantidos separados pelo fraco e previsível roteiro de Marc Klein."
‑ Pablo Villaca, Cinema em Cena
"Serendipity weakens the harder it tries to be cute."
‑ Jeffrey Westhoff, Northwest Herald (Crystal Lake, IL)
"...would this be (Cusack's) "Sleepless in Seattle", or would I have to sit through another "You've Got Mail"? The answer lies somewhere in between."
‑ Larry Carroll, Countingdown.com
"Serendipity may be calculated, but the good news is that all that hard work never prevents it from being genuinely charming."
‑ Charles Taylor, Salon.com
"The goofiest movie Nora Ephron never wrote."
‑ Rob Gonsalves, eFilmCritic.com
"I can't get over the complete reliance on fate even if it is what the movie is all about."
‑ Ryan Cracknell, Movie Views
"A weaker romantic comedy might have tried harder to use grounded and logical explanations for the movie's string of unlikely coincidences, but Serendipity makes no such attempt. For this, it should be commended."
‑ Jeffrey Chen, Window to the Movies
"True, there are traces of hokum and contrivance plots that will drive you batty at times, but Chelson delivers a film that is occasionally smart about its airheaded premise"
‑ Frank Ochieng, Movie Eye
