I first saw this movie on PBS when I was a little kid. I instantly fell head over heels for the film and can honestly say that I love this movie so much. I love the singing. I love the dancing. I love Jane Powell and Howard Keel (they were just too adorable, and their characters are just right for each other). The Pontipee brothers are a bit naive; but that does not stop them from being handsome and entertaining. I can watch this film over and over again and never tire of it. My favorite song is 'Lonesome Polecat'; but, truthfully, I love them all.
When I was eleven, I was pushed into taking a part as one of the brides in a school stage play adaptation, and was at odds with the movie for a while after. Therefore, I try to rate it wihout prejudice.
Adam is a woodcutter who, after marrying Milly, takes her home to meet his brothers (there are six of them, and they're all named after Bible personas). Milly tries to turn the caveman - esque brothers into respectable gentlemen, and soon, the boys meet a group of girls they'd like to marry. All would go well, if Adam didn't have a really dumb plan (which, of course, works in the end).
Though I disliked it first, I admit, it has appeal. I'm really quite partial to the songs, and the actors are spunky. In total, not that bad at all.
Howard Keel heads this wonderful cast of seven rough and tumble outdoors men who ultimately get hitched in this fantastic original musical. Russ Tamblyn, who was also in Westside Story which a couple of you guys thought this was going to be, plays the youngest brother and adds his great gymnast skills to the outstanding dance sequence and showed down that the barn raising sequence is. It demands to be shown in widescreen in order to appreciate all the action that happens in these scenes as multiple performers are challenging each other in many of its scenes. For me it is always between Singin? in the Rain and this as to which is the best musical of all-time.
I recently bought this one. I had seen it when I was a young girl and remember vaguely that I liked it. I still like it now that I am older and can remember the plot. The songs are a little lame and stylized for the time period it was made in. However, it is still a lot of fun and made me smile many times.
I remember really loving this when I was younger, but I'm not into it as much. One of my favorite parts though is when they have the barnyard dance and they are building the barn.
This is like West Side Story in the old west... sorta. It's a musical, with danving, and it's funny and charming. I always liked it and even my Husband admitted it was entertaining and worth seeing.
In watching this, it's obvious that it came from a time where people cared about the movie - the role, and everything in it. It's not there to just make money, or please someone in a suit somewhere. It's fantastic, and the voices are amazing!
One of my favorite movies... I love all the songs and dances and great story of how 6 brothers kidnapped 6 women on the hopes of being their husbands....
How can you tell what's in its spell? How can you tell unless you've tried it? Wait for that kiss you're certain of. And let your heart decide when you're in love.
