Seven is exceptional film making. Kevin spacey is so unbelievably good in this movie. Morgan Freeman was predictably the wise pro, but who cares? If he always plays the part good, why not always give him that part? Seven is an gripping crime triller that doesn't try and go for too many conflicting twists and conspiracies that other modern thrillers and mystery films try and fail at in some vague notion that cluttering the storyline is the only way for a film to keep an audiences attention. Instead seven elegantly follows one killer that has one goal, in chronological simple fashion while still being a layered and complex film. Seven combines a compelling storyline with smart photography direction and clever set design. i personally loved the tree air fresheners hanging from the ceiling in The scene where the man who had committed sloth was found. Seven is a prime exemple of good modern crime noir that other films now strive for but do not come close.
Do you know the 7 deadly sins...bags of body parts, a bitten-off tongue and a man forced to cut off a pound of his own flesh...not half bad, right?...I know everyone went running for Brad Pitt, the young, headstrong cop (how storybook ;/, bah)...but for me the film belongs to Freeman and Spacey...Freeman for his quiet, carefully detailed portrayal of the jaded older man who learns not to give up the fight and Spacey for his portrayal of this ackwardly admirable psychopath who uses murder as a way of showing people what the world is, as well as punishing the wicked...
One of the classics of the 90s. David Fincher makes his name with a superb neo-noir thriller and Mr. Pitt cements his place as a Hollywood leading man. Has one of the most grim and memorable ending in film history. A must see.
suspenseful, disturbing and clever, se7en is a modern masterpiece, and also, in my opinion, the best movie of 1995. first of all, se7en has a great cast; the talented brad pitt delivers an outstanding performance. he plays detective david mills, a young cop, who is partnered with detective william somerset (morgan freeman), who is preparing to retire and leave the horrors of the city. morgan freeman is, as always, amazing, and i think this role is perfect for him. kevin spacey is john doe, portraying insanity perfectly. his performance is one of the greatest supporting performances i have ever seen. after jack the ripper, john doe is the perfect serial killer, a clever, yet insane man who murders his victims according to the seven deadly sins: gluttony, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, wrath. gwyneth paltrow is terrific as tracy mills, david' s wife. andrew kevin walker' s script for se7en is smart and powerful. the sinister music keeps the audience uncomfortable, but in a good way; for the music, i congratulate the extraordinary howard shore. the opening scene is one of the greatest part of the movie. se7en has a brilliant ending, one of the most memorable endings i have ever seen. also, se7en has some great quotes: david mills: maybe you' re just sitting around, reading ,,guns and ammo", masturbating in your own feces; do you just stop and go ,,wow! it is amazing how fucking crazy i really am!". william somerset: people don' t want a hero, they want to eat cheeseburgers, play the lotto and watch television. william somerset: ernest hemingway once wrote: ,,the world is a fine place and worth fighting for". i agree with the second part. john doe: wanting people to listen, you can' t just tap them on the shoulder anymore. you have to hit them with a sledgehammer, and then you' ll notice you' ve got their strict attention.
Amazing thriller. Pitt and Freeman give this movie a sense of stability, when you feel like you could easily lose yourself in the never ending, pain-stakingly twist and turns. The tone of the movie, really captures the dark and dismal storyline. Easily one of my favorite movies.
Well as you can see from my profile this movie had a profound affect on me. I loved it.Morgan Freeman,Brad Pitt, and kevin Spacey all together in one movie? Pure heaven for this girl!!
J'ai aimé :
+ l'ambiance lugubre
+ la réalisation de David Fincher
+ le suspence
+ le génie du scénario (probablement l'un des premiers films avec une telle fin)
+ la performance de la distribution, notamment celle de Kevin Spacey (que l'on voit peut, mais qui est très angoissant)
really comes to life in the second chapter. Some wonderfully written dialouge and superb acting makes this a thrilling piece of movie history, you have to be switched on to watch it but the formula is at times a little predictable but in other ways it keeps u guessing and the choices presented makes the audience think alot more than many contempory texts. a very good film.
Delightfully dark! Exceptional film in every sense. The acting, direction, script and cinematography are all brilliant, and the ending is one of the best I've seen. Absolutely terrific film, and a must-see for everyone.
My favorite Kevin Spacey performance!!! He manages to impress with his acting despite the fact that he appears for only the last 20 minutes of the film. Freeman and Pitt are also excellent!
Seriously? #33 on the IMDB Top 250? It's a collection of imaginative kills and a sociopath villain getting a missive from some higher power. Were it not for the astonishing technical credits, like its gorgeous cinematography and intense editing, Seven would mean little more than any of the Saw movies. It's just sleek, somewhat brainier torture porn. The movie doesn't have any human dimension, allowing graphic imagery to substitute emotion. I'm sure this worked out great in 1995, but the movie doesn't have much punch anymore. I'm pretty desensitized, as it goes.
It isn't to say that I dislike this movie. There's plenty of things to admire about it: it's well-paced, decently acted (for what the characters give the actors, which is not much), and raises a few interesting questions. Unfortunately, there's just not enough here. "Style over substance" is such an easy out for people who don't really know what they're talking about in reviewing a film, but it really is a series of grisly deaths chained by a half-assed plot and some boring characters. Morgan Freeman plays the same prophetic non-character that he does in EVERY movie; Brad Pitt is a little more interesting, but the performance doesn't have enough punch. Kevin Spacey is interesting, as always, and Gwyneth Paltrow does fine in her, like, two scenes.
The power of the ending calls for an emotional investment. Seven didn't even come close to getting one out of me. It hinges on a character we see very little of throughout the film and I just wasn't buying it. Ultimately, I enjoyed the movie as a sanguine, exciting murder mystery and little more. Nothing mind-blowing at all.
Darius Khondji's moody cinematography is the most outstanding factor of one of the best thrillers of the 90s. Andrew Kevin Walker's screenplay is superb, just as the two leads Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt. Suspense goes uphill with every passing minute, and ends up in a powerful and mind-blowing moment. David Fincher's masterwork.
Tense, the dark atmosphere adds to the suspense. It's shocking and out-of-the-ordinary, that has been imitated many times and failed. This is a mainstrem film which hides it's masterclass under a layer of impending doom.
Awesome movie. First off, the premise for the story was just mind-bogglingly great. Next, the movie was just visually engaging. The grit and seediness that blanketed every scene was such a treat to watch. Aside from that, the story progression was just so well executed. Lastly, the climax and ending of ther movie was just completely unforgettable.
This movie has every definition of the word dark. The story, the appearance, the ending, all as dark as a movie can get, This is why it is so good though. Like Silence of the Lambs, there isn't a happy ending here, which makes it feel more realistic and believable unlike most movies. The performances by Pitt, Freeman, and Spacey really add to the realism this movie presents. Another thing about this movie is that it's very heavy on the forensics side of things. So for all CSI fans, this is a must watch. The dark and unique looking settings also make this feel more realistic then most movies. This darkness adds to the movies feeling though and really sets the tone. The greatest part of this movie is really the ending though. It is terribly shocking and disturbing, and couldn't have been executed any better. In my opinion, the ending to this movie is the more suspenseful then any other movie ever. I guarantee your heart rate will double as the ending unfolds.
