Great movie, and i know everyone is swinging from Kevin Spacey's nuts, but I am not a fan. However, everyone else in it is great, kick-ass story, and Brad and Morgan are terrific (as usual).

To be quite honest I have no idea why the movie is from 18, because I personally think it could've been a PG.

The movie's tempo was really slow and I basically had to force myself not to fall asleep during the 2 hour long film.

the essence of the psychological thriller comes alive in this deep and nerve-wracking film, freeman and pitt are both at their strongest as leads, the sinister and repulsing set design contributes greatly to the film's aesthetic

Innovative, Influential and unpredictable. The "Serial Thriller" never looked so good. After the "Alien3" incident, director David Fincher turned his career around with this modern masterpiece. He lulls us into thinking this is just another movie about mismatched cops [the older ...( read more)Freeman, the younger Pitt] on the trail of a psychotic, but Se7en breaks all the conventions of the serial killer film. This murderer, who sees himself as a sword of God punishing the seven deadly sins, does not kill his victims the same way and you never see any of the killings. The bleak conclusion leaves you feeling this can't be the end....indeed, the studio tried to change it but Pitt refused to do the film unless they stuck to the script. Give 'em hell Brad!

"If we catch John Doe and he turns out to be the devil, I mean if he's Satan himself, that might live up to our expectations..." - Detective William R. Somerset

In an anonymous U.S. city with continuous rain, urban decay, and surrounded by a desert mainland, a genius criminal narcissist is about to unleash a series of grisly crimes that will possibly change the way criminals are looked at forever. 34 year veteran Detective William R. Somerset is about to retire and is tasked with spending the last seven days of his career showing young Detective David Mills the ropes. The two are tasked with investigating a disturbing murder scene that turns out to be an obese man who has eaten himself to death. With his career nearly over, Somerset does not want to get too involved into the case and requests to be transferred to something else. His request is denied and Somerset is gripped into the case as it starts to become more diabolical than he first thought. The next victim to pop up is a lawyer who has carved flesh off of himself and the word "Greed" written on the ground in his own blood. Somerset rechecks the first crime scene, that had the obese man, to discover more clues and he finds the word "Gluttony" written on the wall in grease behind a fridge. Somerset reports his findings to the rest of the investigative staff and determines that the killer is murdering in accordance with the seven deadly sins; Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Lust, Wrath, Envy, and Pride. Seven deadly sins, seven ways to die. It will not be long until the next victim is discovered and the investigators are now hard pressed to locate this criminal mastermind in this investigation that will ultimately change them for the rest of their lives.

Prior to this film, director David Fincher had finished Alien 3 and the film was received negatively. Fincher was so frustrated with his work on that film, he would not read another script for a year an a half and would rather die of colon cancer than make another movie. He eventually did pick up the script for this movie, written by Andrew Kevin Walker, and was drawn to it because he found it to be a "connect-the-dots movie that delivers about inhumanity. It's psychologically violent. It implies so much, not about why you did but how you did it." Thanks to Fincher's direction, he has crafted a crime film that stands out there as one of the best.

Morgan Freeman portrays Detective William R. Somerset, a mature and cerebral cop who knows how to get the job done. His limits are tested as simple homicide becomes an elaborate plot by a psychotic killer unlike anything Somerset and his police force has ever seen. The strongest performance here clearly belongs to Freeman as he is a man who may be quiet and calculating, but has a tough past and simply wants to get on with his retirement and be at peace. But because of the case, he learns to not give up the fight and that the world is a place worth fighting for even though it isn't a fine place.

Brad Pitt portrays Detective David Mills, a man who has decided to live in this hell hole of a city and make a name for himself. He is young and hard headed, and were it not for Somerset, he would have been out of the game early on. His family life and anchor is his wife Tracy Mills (Gwyneth Paltrow), whom he loves immensely and the two have been together since high school. Somerset is an admirer of the two's young, long lasting relationship that he says is very rare in the times they are living in. Having Pitt portray this young, aggressive cop is an excellent choice as Pitt never seems to age beyond the look of a young man and knows how to have a foul mouth. Freeman and Pitt's on screen chemistry is excellent even though the two investigators appear to be one of the most unlikely of duos. Also delivering a good performance in a supporting role is Gwyneth Paltrow as David's wife. Tracy isn't entirely happy with being in this dark, grimy city, but loves her husband enough to be here with him. She comes to Somerset looking for wisdom and guidance in how to best handle her struggles she is dealing with.

This film is all about the intensifying plot that leads up to a twist ranking 10.0 on the Richter scale. The villain appears halfway through the story and we never learn his real name. Simply dubbed a John Doe and portrayed by Kevin Spacey, we don't learn every detail about him, just the important facts. Spacey is awesome and makes the character intriguing by displaying his intelligence and has a scene stealing smile at the very end that you won't forget.

The city that this story takes place seems to always have rainy weather. It is not until the characters venture out to the Saharan like wasteland outside of the city where the rain is gone. What is well crafted is the design of the and concept of John Doe and the intelligent way the victims are murdered. For instance, an obese man eats until his stomach bursts, a lawyer must slice off a pound of flesh, and after that they get grimmer and extreme. The victims are made to look visually hideous and horrific and this increases the shock value of this film. There is a Blade Runner style chase through an apartment building to give this film an actual action scene, but besides that the only action is the movement of this excellent plot that leaves a psychological impact.

Director David Fincher and screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker together pull off a genius cinematic coup at the end. The ending of this film is worth watching the entire movie for as it will leave you reeling, emotionally distraught, and make you feel like your mind has been threw hell. Your heart will be pumping and your stomach churning because of the excellence and darkness of this story. This film should definitely be checked out by all movie watchers who are mature and strong enough to handle it.

"Earnest Hemingway once wrote, "The world is a fine place and worth fighting for." I believe the second part." - Detective William R. Somerset

A retiring detective and his young successor investigate a series of bizarre murders based on the seven deadly sins. The lukewarm reception for David Fincher's debut Alien 3 resulted in most writing him off as another style over substance hack from the MTV generation, but boy did...( read more) he learn from his mistakes. No-one was expecting his follow up to be much of interest; let alone a virtual modern masterpiece. Fincher had clearly been studying the stylistic hallmarks of Ridley Scott, and the dark, brooding atmosphere crossed with artistic visuals are very much in his tradition. Although the formula of world-weary educated gentleman cop teamed up with a young hot head is hardly an original one, excellent performances and intelligent writing steer the material clear of cliche, and the imagery of the grotesque never descends into unnecessary gore or sensationalism. Complimented by a suitably claustrophobic soundtrack and a brilliantly unpredictable plot twist, I struggle to see how this film could have been any better. In the absurdly overcrowded marketplace of the serial killer movie, this stands head and shoulders above the rest as the very, very best of the genre. And yes, that includes the over-rated Silence Of The Lambs.

Police drama about two cops, one new and one about to retire, after a serial killer using the seven deadly sins as his MO.

    REVIEW

Disturbing, gory, violent, this mind-blowing, cleverly-written thriller is one of the best movies of the '90's, and a classic of its genre; no thriller after Seven will ever be this great, although movies don't get tired of trying; but like Chinatown, Seven set the stakes too high.

At first, the movie seems just the tired of cliche of having an intelligent, patient old detective just about to retire, and a smart-mouthed impulsive rookie together - but it is beyond that; Morgan Freeman, in the Oscar-deserving role of William Somerset, contrasts Brad Pitt's young detective David Mills, in a role that restored Pitt some credibility as a real actor - both are different aspects of life: hope and despair, which has much to do with the theme of the movie.

Together, they look for a serial killer with a well defined purpose and a really sick MO: each of his victims represent one of the seven deadly sins, through which deaths the killer wants to show how sick our society is for allowing and accepting walking sins everywhere; never a serial killer was this good since Hannibal Lecter, but Kevin Spacey's character, John Doe, is even more disturbing due to his sense of purpose.

Never boring, actually very intelligent, the movie flies away for two hours of twists and action, until reaching the only possible satisfactory conclusion - can't tell it, but it's up there with The Usual Suspects, The Sixth Sense and Memento.

And between the first and last death, the viewer experiences a journey through the worst humanity has to offer, as screenplayer Andrew Kevin Walker includes some of his philosophy on our daily life, mostly explored during the conversations between Mills and Somerset.

David Fincher makes thus a slow-paced, sometimes action-packed, cerebral thriller out of the horrors of our society, making his work only more poignant through good editing, dark sets and very tiwsted angles.
